Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow: Oliver was a nine year old boy. He lived with other homeless boys in an orphanage. He was pale and thin as were the other boys living there. This was because they had to work hard but were never given enough to eat. The owner of the orphanage, Mr. Bumble, was a cruel man and he ill-treated the boys. The boys were always hungry. It was true that they were given three meals a day but each meal consisted of only of a bowl of watery soup. They were almost starving. So it 1 P a g e

was decided by them to ask the master for more soup. But who would bell the cat? Finally the task fell to Oliver. When all the boys were assembled in the cold stone hall for their evening meal, the soup was served. It soon disappeared. The boys whispered to one another and one boy pushed Oliver a little. Oliver making a brave effort, stood up, walked up to the master with his bowl and spoon in his hand, and said tremblingly, Please sir, I want some more. a) Who was Oliver? (1) b) Where did he live? PASSAGE- II 2. Read the poem below and answer the questions given below: (10) Once there lived a carpenter named Kasi. He had a five year old son. His name was Vasu. Kasi s father Ramu was too old and he also stayed with them. Kasi began to think that his father was of no use to him became he was too old to do any work. Kasi always spoke angrily to his father. One day, Kasi gave food in a mud plate to his father. Being too old, Ramu was not able to hold the mud plate. He dropped it down and broke it. Kasi became very angry and scolded his father. Vasu observed this. The next day,kasi gave a new mud plate. He went out to work. When he came back, he saw the new mud plate also broken into pieces. He scolded his father badly and warned him, Old man, if you break the next plate also, there will be no food for you. Vasu was listening to his father s words. Next day, in the evening, when he came back home he saw his son doing some work with his carpentry tools. He was surprised to see this and happily went near him; Kasi asked Vasu What are you doing my son? Vasu replied Dad, I am making a plate of wood for you. When you become old, I will give you this wood plate so that you will not break it and I need not send you out of the house Kasi realized his mistake and apologized to his father for his mistakes. It is more interesting than any other book. It is more philosophic than any other book on philosophy. It is a complete moral code. It contains the life story of Rama who is thought to be an incarnation of God. Hence it is a religious book which helps us to make us good and pious. The book is full of ideals. It presents every situation of life. From the examples given in the book, we learn how we should behave with our parents, brothers, sisters, friends, enemies, teachers, learned persons, strangers, husbands, wives, sons and even the low caste people.it teaches us to be brave and cheerful in all circumstances. Thus we may call it the best book for character-building in the world. OR My Best Friend My best friend is Archana. We are good friends from the childhood. She is a smart girl having fair complexion and dimpled cheeks. She is a pretty girl. She is very entertaining, jolly and helpful in nature. She understands me a lot and become always ready to help me in my all bad or happy conditions. We are classmates and become together every time.
