Keep live music alive by your attendance at each session. Thank you and please read the special messages in this months BEAT. Mal Silva Memorial Bill Armstrong Bill Armstrong passed away on June 29 th. Many of us who knew Bill knew of his life-long passion for Dixieland jazz. He founded the Churchill Street Jazz Band in 1974, introduced many young musicians to Dixieland jazz, and was voted Jazz Musician of the Year in 1996 by the Santa Rosa Jazz Society. Friends of Bill are invited to Sunol Jazz Cafe, 11986 Main Street, Sunol. Sunday, October 21st, 1 to 4 p..m. Members of the old Churchill Street J.B. will play, as well as other musicians. Sunol is just off State Highway 680 between Fremont and Pleasanton.. In Memory Dottie Lawless Dottie Lawless passed away late July. Dottie and Doc Lawless were very active in the jazz scene and primarily responsible for running NOJC many years ago. Ed passed away about 6 or 7 years ago. Over the years, Dottie has done so much for the musicians and helping to keep our music alive. Our sympathies go to Dottie s family and friends. Memorial Service Gene Weir We lost Gene Weir on July 8, 2012. Come and celebrate his life, music and friends on Saturday, September 8th, from 12:00 p.m to 4:00 p.m. at Holbrook Palmer Park, 150 Watkins Avenue, Atherton. All are welcome. Any donations can be made to the South Bay Traditional Jazz Society. SBTJS is sending two local young musicians to the Sacramento Jazz Camp this August. Jim O briant our Youth Activities Director has located these young people and facilitated signing them up. We are delighted to be able to help keep our kind of music alive by furthering the music education of young musicians. We are grateful to Rich Owens, who when hearing our plans, donated a generous amount to support this Youth Activity. More reports later. Dixie Dominus The Jam Sets in August will feature Dixie Dominus The is a rambunctious (quote from Sacramento s Music Festival) bunch of Fremont Christian High School students who dive deep into the world of Traditional Jazz. OUR WORLD By Joseph Templett Our world is full of music, that is given to us all. It brings us special moments, when music is that call. It s music that helps each day, a gift I must confess. Perhaps a prayer I can say, will help me through my stress. A prayer can endure most anything, with help from up above. Even restore the life within, and still maintain it s love. I must contain the strength I seek, and remember what I ve said. Yet nature is what we keep, when the knowledge is in our head. Hope and love can be grand, from the music I m thinking of. But greatness is in any man, if he has a heart with love. Our world is full of music, for it is a personal call. We come to that special moment, when music is there for us all.
