203 second story window ninety-five I can find the main idea of a nonfiction passage. The Dark Side of Light You ve heard of air pollution and water pollution, but have you ever heard of light pollution? Usually we think of pollution as something being dirty. Light pollution doesn t mean anything is dirty, it means there is too much light. If you ve ever been outside a city at night and seen the sky glowing, that s light pollution. Humans like to light up cities and towns at night. It might seem absurd to be worried about light, but actually there are some serious consequences. With so many lights, we can no longer see the stars. The next time you re out in the middle of nowhere, look up at the sky. You ll be able to see many stars, including the Milky Way. If you try the same thing in a city, you ll hardly be able to see the stars at all. Too much light can also cause health problems. In order to work properly, your body needs a cycle of light and dark. If that cycle is messed up, you can get sick. Scientists are still studying this. Also, there are problems with light pollution which affect birds and other wildlife. Some birds actually fly into buildings that are lit up as they migrate at night. Sea turtles need dark beaches to lay their eggs, but they won t come out of the water if it s too bright. The good news is we can easily fix light pollution. The solution is light fixtures that are designed to project light downward rather than upward. These types of lights also save energy what a way to help the planet!
