FALL 18 Dear Friends, Welcome to the 2018-2019 series of wonderful music making at Peachtree Road UMC. We have been blessed with a truly magnificent space and it is only right that equally exquisite music goes in it. Peachtree Road believes that every perfect gift is from above. With this in mind, we are dedicated to bringing enriching music and performances to our church family. Music has the ability to profoundly touch our hearts and souls. This series is an excellent way to enrich your life through the energy and beauty expressed through a live performance. I encourage you to take a few moments to look through this brochure to learn about each concert, the program and artists. Through your generosity we are able to bring nationally and internationally renowned artists to our church and city. Then and There, Here and Now contains music by some of Chanticleer s favorite composers, from Palestrina and Victoria to Mason Bates and Steven Stucky, lustrous examples of the South American baroque, as well as audience favorite arrangements by Jennings, Shaw, McGlynn and others. Then and There, Here and Now reflects the expansive aesthetic and seamless virtuosity in ensemble singing which have been Chanticleer s hallmark for four decades. 2 These men are phenomenal: as fresh as a blade of grass, tightly focused and keenly expressive. 3
A HARP ODYSSEY 9.16 40 Years - A Harp Odyssey Georgia Chapter of the American Harp Society Sunday, September 16, 2018, 7:00 pm, Sanctuary Harpists from around the state will join together to perform works by Bach, Offenbach, Strauss and more. The Middle Georgia and Urban Youth Harp Ensembles will be featured as well as a special performance by Elisabeth Remy Johnson, Principal Harpist of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. PRUMC Associate Organist, Nicole Marane, will also join the group with selections for organ and the entire ensemble of harps. Admission is Free. HARP SOCIETY CORO VOCATI 9.30 4 Coro Vocati The Music of Pilgrimage: To the Field of Stars Sunday, September 30, 2018, 3:00 pm, Moore Chapel John Dickson, conductor Coro Vocati s 2018-2019 season is dedicated to the quest for the Divine. They begin by following the Way of St. James to Santiago where they ll discover Gabriel Jackson s To the Field of Stars featuring Atlanta cellist, Guang Wang. That the words organ recital and fun could appear in the same sentence probably wouldn t occur to many people But Thomas Heywood s recital had the audience grinning from ear to ear. Mr. Heywood isn t just a brilliant organist, he s a firstclass musician, with technique to burn, a visceral sense of rhythm and a virtuoso command of complicated registration changes... The Dallas Morning News ORGAN DEDICATION 11.11 Organ Dedication Concert Sunday, November 11, 2018 7:00 pm, Rotunda Experience the delights and intimacy of chamber music as Peachtree Road dedicates two instruments, the Van Daalen continuo organ and the Estey Harmonium pedal organ, made specifically for this purpose! THE MANY MOODS OF CHRISTMAS 12.9 The Many Moods of Christmas Sunday, December 9, 2018, 5:30 pm, Sanctuary PRUMC Chancel Choir, Georgia Boy Choir soloists, orchestra Scott Atchison, conductor The PRUMC Chancel Choir, soloists and orchestra and the Georgia Boy Choir present their Christmas classic. From traditional Christmas hymns to moving new settings of familiar carols, this concert will open your hearts and souls to the miraculous story of Jesus birth. The six narrators are part of the musical structure in this duet between organ and spoken word. The nine featured rhymes are: Little Bo Peep, the Clock, the Cats of Kilkenny, The talk of Miss Muffet, One Two, Buckle My Shoe, the Fiddlers (the Cat and the Fiddle, Old King Cole, Jack and his Fiddle.) VOICES OF HOPE 1.27 Voices of Hope: From Prison to Praise The Women s Choir of Lee Arrendale State Prison Sunday, January 27, 2019, 5:00 pm, Sanctuary Rev. Susan Bishop, Director Peachtree Road has a rich history in prison ministry having served our incarcerated brothers and sisters through mentoring, tutoring, and leading support groups and Bible studies for over a decade. This 42 member choir has inspired us with their extraordinary faith and voices for many years, and now we are honored to host their first concert at PRUMC. Admission is free. To sing with joy, surrounded by my sisters in Christ, is a way of expressing our hope in God s grace, His healing spirit and our future. GEORGIA BOY CHOIR FESTIVAL 2.16 Georgia Boy Choir Festival Finale Concert Saturday, February 16, 2019, 7:30 pm, Sanctuary David R. White, conductor PRUMC hosts the Tenth Annual Georgia Boy Choir Festival drawing more than 250 young men from across the United States together for a day and a half of music making. The Festival culminates with a Grand Finale Concert featuring all five levels of GBC, local guest participants and visiting choirs. Tickets at www. georgiaboychoir.org. ATLANTA SUMMER ORGAN FESTIVAL 6.26 Atlanta Summer Organ Festival Wednesday, June 26, 2019, 7:30 pm, Sanctuary Ray and Beth Chenault Named the World s Premiere Duo-Organ Team by The Atlanta Journal and Constitution, Elizabeth and Raymond Chenault, duo-organists, have concertized extensively throughout the United States and Europe. Specializing in works written for two performers, The Chenaults have commissioned, arranged and premiered over fifty organ duets, thereby making organ music for four hands, four feet synonymous with The Chenaults. $15 suggested donation. Dessert reception following the recital. The Atlanta Summer Organ Festival was established in 1995 to help increase classical music performances in the summer and PRUMC joined as a host in 2002. To this day, the festival continues the tradition of offering a series of wonderful venues for both established and talented rising young organists. M FFriends of Music FRIENDS OF MUSIC The Arts have always played an important role in the life of the Church, and have a biblical, historical and theological precedence for doing so. The nurturing of the Arts within a faith setting provides a strong stimulus for people to attend a wide variety of events such as concerts, recitals, special services, and entertainment offerings. The Friends of Music Patron Program enters is fifth year of supporting The Arts Program and Peachtree Road. Through the Friends of Music ( FOM ) initiatives, we are able to continue fulfilling our mission of: Offering the finest possible musical occasions in our annual concert series, including sponsoring concerts by nationally and internationally renowned ensembles Expanding the understanding and value of music Supporting the music ministry in all they do to help lead worship services in our great church Financially supporting and facilitating these initiatives Through the generosity and faithful support of the Friends of Music, we can expand this tradition of excellence and the arts will thrive at Peachtree Road for many seasons to come.
