Aout the Music The entire remise o this iece is the vie o an oen ield in the summer at night, hen thousands o irelies light u the darkness It can e a mesmerizing sight and got my imagination moving at the thought o someone eing hynotized y the lashing lights and then aking in the middle o the ield, comletely enguled in the magniicent gloing lights The iece essentially takes the listener on a metahorical journey It egins ith a sot, steady rhythm surrounded y light metallic sounds This creates the canvas on hich the entire ork is ainted The sot introduction reresents the vie o the oen ield rom ar aay - erhas u on a hill looking don - and atching the tinkling lights aear in various atterns and locations The initial material continues or some time (contriuting to the hynotic state that the listener is entering) and then sloly uilds into measure 5, here e sna ack into consciousness to ind ourselves in the middle o the ield, surrounded y the eaceul glo o irelies everyhere One can eel the steady increasing intensity o music as the lights gro ever righter, and the listener can imagine the visual ercetion o eightlessness as the lights hover around - almost as though they ere stars As the lights reach their eak, so does the music A inal exlosive series o rhythms and thick textures emanates rom the ensemle eore the glo (and musical energy) egins to ade Once more, the hynotic movement o the irelies takes over and the listener is transorted ack to the hill, atching the irelies rom aar As the music ades, so do the lights inally there is only darkness and silence, leaving the listener ishing or the arm lights to come once more, ut they never do There are a lot o unique eects and instruments used in the iece iano is an essential art o the texture, ut the art is easy enough to e layed y most school students edal should e used throughout as noted in the music Take seciic note that, hile the rest o the ensemle should slo don at the end o the iece, the iano layer is seciically instructed to maintain temo and ignore the ritardando I ould suggest that directors sto conducting once the ensemle reaches the oen reeat and simly indicate that the musicians get soter and soter until there is no more sound Once silence occurs, encourage the entire ensemle to stay still and take in the magic o the moment The audience ill e unsure i the iece is over, and that silence is as musically aroriate to the iece as all the notes on the age The iece also calls or an amliied metal slinky The slinky does not necessarily need to e amliied y a microhone layers can try to ush a lastic ottle into the end and use the mouth o the ottle as an acoustic amliier A styrooam cu can also e attached to act as an amliier Note that it is only used in delicate sections here volume is not an issue The slinky should e stretched a decent amount (either eteen to layers or hanging rom something ut not touching the ground) When striking it near the end ith a stick or mallet, it should create hat is oularly called the Star Wars Laser Sound (you'll kno it hen you hear it) Hoever, it should e very delicate in this iece The idea here is not to have a laser sound - rather, the idea is to create an ethereal, celestial tye o sound that is much more delicate You ill need to exeriment ith this a it oth in the rehearsal and concert halls to get the right sound and alance The strongest ercussionists should cover the mallet ercussion and ercussion arts (articularly the susended cymal) Mallet ercussion is layale y one layer Most likely, you ill need layers to cover Mallet ercussion I only one layer is availale, make sure that erson leaves in lenty o time to get to the marima's irst entrance, even i it is at the exense o the material receding that entrance ercussion and can e erormed y layers on each art, though there are lenty o instruments to involve additional layers i you have them availale I truly hoe you enjoy erorming this iece as much as I enjoyed riting it It ill challenge your grou, ut I hoe it ill also reard them B5
