THE COMOSER Andre Boysen, r is resently a roessor in the music deartment at the University o Ne Hamshire, here he conducts the ind symhony and teaches conducting and comosition Under his leadershi, the UNH ind symhony has released six recordings and been invited to erorm at regional conventions o the College Band Directors National Association and National Association or Music Education reviously, Boysen taught at Indiana State University and Cary-Grove (IL) High School, and as the music director and conductor o the Deerield Community Concert Band He remains active as a guest conductor and clinician, aearing ith high school, university and estival ensembles across the United States, Great Britain, and Australia Boysen earned his Doctor o Musical Arts degree in ind conducting at the Eastman School o Music, here he served as conductor o the Eastman Wind Orchestra and assistant conductor o the Eastman Wind Ensemble He received his Master o Music degree in ind conducting rom Northestern University in 99 and his Bachelor o Music degree in music education and music comosition rom the University o Ioa in 99 He maintains an active schedule as a comoser, receiving commissions rom estival, university, and high school concert bands across the United States Boysen on the International Horn Society Comosition Contest in 000, the University o Ioa Honors Comosition rize in 99 and has tice on the Claude T Smith Memorial Band Comosition Contest, in 99 and 99 Boysen has several ublished orks ith the Neil A Kos Music Comany, Wingert-ones Music, Alred Music, Masters Music, and C Alan ublications, including ieces or band, orchestra, clarinet and iano, and brass choir Recordings o his music aear on the Sony, R-Kal, Mark, St Ola and El labels THE COMOSITION I have long admired the masterul cratsmanshi o aul Hindemith s Symhony or Band, articularly the second movement, during hich a beautiul, slo melodic line is resented, olloed immediately by a much aster, scherzo-like section It eels as though the listener has heard in one movement hat should be both the traditional second and third movements o a symhony Hoever, at the end o the movement, Hindemith literally laces the entire irst section on to o the entire second section It is a moment o sheer genius and I have alays anted to try to rite something similar Alchemy is my attemt to create that same eect, although I must admit that I ailed to achieve my ultimate goal! The iece begins ith an oboe solo introducing the basic melodic material or the iece Then the irst main melodic statement begins in the saxohones, ith a resonse rom the ull ensemble Ater this slo oening, the iece becomes tice as ast, introducing ne material that is built on the original melody Eventually, this aster material is reeated along ith the return o the oening chorale on to o it, only in maor instead o minor I ultimately altered some o the irst section material, unortunately alling short in my attemt to relicate Hindemith s erection The title or the iece reers to the idea that alchemy involves the attemt to combine and transorm base metals into gold In other ords, in this iece I tried to take to individual sections and combine them to create a more erect statement hile also transorming them rom a dark (minor) color to a bright (maor) one I also reinorced this concet by using only metallic instruments in the ercussion section (other than timani), including to susended cymbals, tam-tam, china cymbal, triangle, inger cymbals, metal music stand, brake drum, ice bell, sleigh bells, snare drum (rim only), vibrahone, orchestra bells, and chimes SAMLE Alchemy as commissioned by the Indiana Bandmasters Association or the 008 All-District Honor Bands WB0
