While father JOHN PAUL worries about the family s future, his youngest son, MARTIN (10) is only concerned with one thing finishing building his own replica of the car from his favourite movie - Back To The Future. Using an old banger and bits of scrap, Martin has painstakingly recreated the DeLorean s every detail. His work is nearly complete but he is devastated when John Paul tells him they ll have to leave the car behind. Defiant, Martin puts all his energy into completing it before the eviction but John Paul is infuriated by his unwillingness to pitch in with packing up the site. Hurt by his father s lack of understanding, Martin storms off proclaiming his wish for a different life but while out collecting scrap, Martin has an encounter with a settled family where he experiences firsthand the discrimination that Travellers are frequently subjected to. Confused and upset, Martin returns to the site intent on destroying the car he s worked so hard on but his father stops him. John Paul does his best to explain to his son what he s just experienced and they reconcile. He helps Martin put the finishing touches to the car and in the penultimate scene, John Paul hooks Martin s car up to the back of his Jeep. They take it for a victorious test drive around the nearby field, at the end of which the bond between father and son is as strong as ever. The next day, the council bulldozers arrive to clear the site. Although the McDonagh s future is uncertain, John Paul reassures his family that whatever happens, they ll face it together.
