NEWS FROM THE WOOD LAKEWOOD MIDDLE SCHOOL SUCCESSFUL STUDY TIPS WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO STUDY? By: Coralyn Sager The best time to study, when is that exactly? A question many of us ask. Well the amount of time to study is six to nine hours a week. It depends on if you re a morning person or if you are a night person, ideally the best time to study is from two to six p.m. If you re studying for something small, like vocab. words, in your few spare minutes a day, make flash cards and constantly quiz yourself on them. Studying with a partner tends to help because you have someone to collaborate with. However if you like to study alone is it okay to listen to music? Well many of us do this, and your brain tends to remember information better. So listening to music is good for you, and so is studying with a partner, and the best time to study is from two to six p.m. I hope this helps with your questions or in some way helped you with a new way to study that will benefit you. Your brain tends to remember more and if you ve already got a great study tip then try something new and see if it works better. Each person has a different way to remember the information. So remember the way your friends study is probably different from the way you study. HOW DO I STUDY FOR A TEST? By: Olivia Alward A lot of people are asking around the school how do I study for a test that is coming up? Do I use study cards? How do I manage my time with sports and school? I just don t know what to do. People get in trouble when I come into class with no work because of sports. I need help but I am scared to ask for help. Some of the ways to study for a test are getting organized. You can do this by writing what you did in each class this is also called taking notes. You can write in your agenda of what homework you have in each class. This will help you set a schedule of what you have to do each night. Make sure you know what your test is about. After class you could go ask the teacher about the test that is coming up. One way to practice test material is to teach it to someone else. Use what you know and teach your parents how to do your problem. Or, you know, you could make flashcards. Flashcards are a good way to study because you can flip the card to the front and back where you will have answers and questions. This will help with vocab words and definitions. These are just some ways that can help you study for a test or an exam. If you have any other questions then you could always ask Lakewood s advice box. Now if you use these ways you will get good grades on a test. EDITORS: LEIGHA DAVIS & CAMRYN MARTINDALE 1

Dear Lancer, I am having trouble balancing a good social life and all my school work that needs to be done. I want to get my work done on time, but being in basketball and attending other after school events makes it hard. I am constantly struggling with due dates and I often feel overwhelmed with all the work that needs to be done. I also don t want to feel excluded by my friend group by being the only one not going to the all of the after school sporting events. Help me!! Dear Struggling Student, I understand what you are going through. Being in middle school, it is often hard to find a healthy balance between hanging with friends and attending after school events, and getting all the schoolwork done on time. Although hanging out with your friends is fun, you have to remember that school should always be a top priority. Try to find a day in which you have nothing going on and try to get all your work that needs completed done on that day. You should also keep in mind that there will be many more after school sporting events for you to attend. Therefore, skipping one or two in order to finish an assignment is not a big deal. As for your friends and the feeling of exclusion, if they are really your friends, missing one game will not get you kicked out of the group. I understand though the feeling of being excluded can suck. Just keep in mind that they are your friends and they would never do anything on purpose to exclude you. Try asking your teacher about future assignments before they are assigned so you can get a head start on the work that needs done. You should also try to get your work done as soon as you get home from school to prevent you having to stay up late. I hope you this advice worked and that you find a solution to your problem. Dear Lancer, I m so stressed with school it takes me a really long time to fall asleep. I get to bed in a decent hour. I want to be well rested for the early school morning so I don t fall asleep in class. Sincerely, Wanna Be Sleepyhead Dear Wanna Be Sleepyhead, Here s three ways to fall asleep faster; limit your caffeine intake, turn your phone off, cut down on video games. When you are trying to fall asleep you need to limit your caffeine intake. Researchers from the Sleep Disorders & Research Center at Henry Ford Hospital and Wayne State College of Medicine analyzed how caffeine disrupts sleep when drank at different points in time during the day. Sleep Disorders & Research Center at Henry Ford Hospital and Wayne State College of Medicine found that having caffeine even six hours before you sleep can affect your sleep by at least an hour. When trying to sleep turn your phone on silent. California State University, Dominguez Hills, conducted sleep research that stems from lab work on the psychology of technology. They found that trying to sleep with your phone on can cause anxiety. Anxiety can cause you to not be able to sleep even longer than playing on your phone. When trying to fall asleep you should cut down on video games. Screen brightness affects release of melatonin. Melatonin is a hormone made by the pineal gland, a small gland in the brain. Melatonin helps control your sleep and wake cycles.the bright blue and white screens delay delay your sleep time.video games can delay your sleep time by an hour at least. To be well rested for school and other activities you can fall asleep faster by limiting your caffeine intake, turning your phone off, cutting down on video games. Dear Lancer, I can never find any papers in my bookbag until three weeks or so after I needed them. I have an older brother in high school and he is well organized and he keeps trying to tell me to get organized now so I will be ready for high school. I don t know how to get organized though and my brother will not give me any tips. I can t really get organized if I do not have any tips. So, does anyone have any tips to help me with organization? - Uncontrollable mess but no solution Dear uncontrollable mess, I have a few tips I could give you. The first tip is to get folders, preferably one folder for each class period you have that you will or might have to take papers home. I suggest writing 1st period, 2nd period, 3rd period, etc., or language arts, math, history, etc., or 1st period and the class you have 1st period. One of my other tips that would go with the folders is to make sure the folders you get don t look similar in color or design. So, I wouldn t get two folders that are the same shade of blue, I would get a light blue and a blue if I wanted two blue folders instead of getting a white or black folder with several other colors. The second tip is to get a case-it binder, you can get them at Walmart or Staples, but I haven t seen any in Kroger. A case-it binder is a binder that is in a cloth like material and either has a zipper or a velcro strap. The velcro strap is stitched on one end and there is velcro on the other end and there is velcro on the one side. A case-it binder did help my brother stay more organized because my brother just like collapsed after school was out after the first day of sixth grade and my brother s best friend said that it was a really rough day for my brother. It was because of my brother s binder that made it a really rough day for him and when he got a case-it binder, my brother has never collapsed after school again because of a really rough day. That is the difference of switching from a regular binder to a case-it binder. There can also be case-it binders that are more like normal binders with only opening on one side or case-it binders can also open like a z.those are a few tips I can give you. Dear Lancer, I ve been really busy lately with all of my sports, activities, and homework. As soon as I get home from school, I have to immediately get ready for softball practice at four o'clock, and it doesn t end until six thirty. After ball practice, I help out around the community for about an hour. After that I eat dinner and shower and when that s all done, it s eight forty five. I don t know how I can keep my grades up with my busy schedule when I m tired and wanting to sleep at eight forty five. How can I adjust my schedule to make time for everything? - Tired & Exhausted Dear Tired & Exhausted, My advice to you is whenever you have even a little bit of time, you should try to work on some homework. If your bus driver allows, you could work on homework on the bus, or on your way to softball practice. Also, it s great that you like to help out with the community everyday, but if you find yourself too stressed or if you have a test the next day, you should stay at home and study. Try helping out the community every other day, and if that doesn t work out, try twice a week. It s okay to not help out every day. You are a growing teenager and it s very important that you get plenty of rest as well as time for studying and homework. School is a major part in everybody s lives because it determines what our future will look like. I hope I helped you with your busy schedule. EDITORS: LEIGHA DAVIS & CAMRYN MARTINDALE 3

STUDENT REVIEWS PADDINGTON 2 By: Jenna Beane Recently I took the time to go and see the movie Paddington 2, which was a continuation of the first movie. I was pleasantly surprised with the movie, being that it wasn t my first choice. In the beginning I would have much rather saw the new Insidious movie, but I ended up really enjoying it. The movie is about the life of a strange bear with a quirky personality. It came out in 2018 and the director is Paul King. Some of the big named actors who were in this movie include Hugh Grant and Sally Hawkins. The movie is rated PG and the movie is 105 minutes long. The script of the movie was funny and enjoyable for people if all ages. The humor of the bear can be entertaining for all ages and it is a great family movie. The movie begins by showing you how Paddington, the main character, was rescued by the bears he considered his family. Later it goes onto show how Paddington is living his life in London. Paddington goes out to hunt for a job in the movie. Everything is good until he needs to buy his aunt Lucy a birthday present, which causes him to end up in jail. Along with a great script, the songs played in the movie were perfect for the scenes. Each song was original and fit the script well. They were all upbeat and happy which further contributed to the lightheartedness of the entire movie. The plot of the movie is exceptionally easy to follow. Which is another reason why the movie would appeal to younger audiences as well. Although the plot was easy to follow, it was not predictable. Paddington gets himself in an issue and he must find his way to get himself out. He gets into a bit of danger which keeps the plot exciting. Not only is the movie funny, it has its sweet moments. In the end of the movie, the family Paddington lives with brings him a sweet surprise that will warm your heart. Overall, I would definitely recommend this movie to every age group. From the funny script and the perfect music, to the unpredictable plot, the movie is one to remember. I would rate this movie a 5/5. Next time you have some free time, try going to your local movie theater and seeing Paddington 2, you will not regret it WARRIORS By: Ally Johnson Rusty, a house cat living happily with his humans, starts to wonder what it would be like to live in the wild when he is about 6 months old. Little does Rusty know that the clan that he ends up in helps Rusty find a path to the destiny that was laid out for him to find. The path that was laid out for Rusty to find takes Rusty on many important and thrilling adventures. Rusty also lives a great life in the clan, and clan life is not as scary as it seems from stories told from other house cats. Rusty also gains a very important position through being loyal, being trusted not to go back to being a house cat, and becomes known in all the clans. Rusty is glad he has came really far from a house cat and will not be tempted into house cat life now that Rusty knows that he truly belongs in Thunderclan. Rusty also had to prove himself many times to be able to earn the respect of his clanmates and showed he was loyal to his clan. As time progresses in the book series, Rusty is still in the book series but the point of view changes from Rusty on to other cats in Thunderclan. The Warriors book series is really good and really well written and I think anyone could read or listen to a book in the Warriors book series and become interested.
