BUMBERSHOOT 2016 Top 6 Performances: Third Eye Blind Duh. They killed it like always. It was their last show on their tour and they brought the energy all our 90s rock souls needed. Anderson.Paak and the Free National Wow! Blow away by the talent on the main stage Saturday. He is a true performer. I see big things for Anderson.Paak and his band in the future. St. Lucia Giant dance party! A little bit of rain made the magic. Luckly will have a chance to see them again at Austin City Limits. Manatee Commune Keep your eyes and ears open for this guy. Great performance. So much energy on stage and he was so humble. This talented guy is on the up and up. Father John Misty He is a rock star. How does he move his body like that? He looks like the most beautiful wacky waving inflatable arm flailing tube man outside of a car dealership. KYGO What a fun show! He kept it alive and hyfye for all of us. Either you had a great dance buddy for that show or you were dancing solo. But one thing is for certain, your body was moving and shaking. By Natalie Miano (photos on this page by Natalie Miano)

photo by: natalie miano one undeinable fact is music festivals bring the jams MANATEE COMMUNE Have you played at festivals like Bumbershoot before? What do you like about playing at festivals? I played at Bumbershoot once in 2014 I don t even remember what stage it was but it was small. I have to admit being an artist at a music festival has ruined music festivals for me. In the past I was into them because it was always raw. Forced to camp with everyone and really be in it but now I get treated a little bit like royalty. There is a green room and always someone there to get you water. As a viewer, music festivals rock. As a performer, I enjoy that people don t have to come out for your show. They just natural wander over and are there for the music. In that sense I think my favorite shows are at music festivals because everyone is there to have a good time. Bumbershoot is a great festival. It is in the heart of the city. I ve played South by Southwest and Tree Pop and they were spread out around the city. It is really cool because it is classic. And to be right underneath the icon of Seattle.. *get distracted by water fountain* sorry anyways that s why I like it? photo by: bumbershoot 2016 Where did you come up with Manatee Commune? Oh man! If I could be honest I wish I could change it. It was 4 years ago. I was going through a big animal collective kick and I wanted my artist name to be two words. I happened to see this gif of a manatee running into the wall. It was an inside joke with myself. The idea of a commune, because of its sexual connotation, was funny when throwing it in with the word, Manatee. At least it is memorable. Gold Panada, Tycho, Ratatat. Currents by Tame Impala. Malibu by Anderson.Paak. The new show, Strangers Things, and 80s aesthetic is on the tip of everyone s tongue. It has been super inspiring for me. Can you discuss how you make your sound using the violin and guitar? I was 10 when I decided to play violin. The only way I can translate my music making is using violin and guitar. It is so much apart of me, that it just happened to be in my music making. I wish I could play other instruments. It is so fun having those string instruments on stage. photo by: natalie miano What themes//feels are you trying to get people to experience when they listen to your EP Thistle? In the beginning I wanted to create a relaxing album. I just want people to feel warm and have a good feeling. But now I want them to feel excited about whatever their doing in their life because that is how I feel. I also want it to be a little silly. Inspiring and silly at the same time.

HINDS Why did you choose to write and sing all your songs in English? Yes well we are from Madrid and when we started playing music we sang and wrote our song in English because it just came out that way. All the music we listen to is in English. It just felt natural. We used to listen to a lot of garage music but now we are into hip-hop. We like artist like Kanye, Kendrick Lamar, and Anderson.Paak. Have you played at festivals like Bumbershoot before? What do you like about playing at festivals? It is full of great artists and it is fun to meet and mingle with other bands. Unfortunately we wont be seeing many bands today because we are leaving. Bumbershoot is a cool festival because it is in the city. We had a good time in Seattle. Where did the name Hinds come from? We used to be called Deers but there was other band called The Deers so we changed it to Hinds, which means a female deer. We felt it was very appropriate. album cover from hinds What themes//feels are you trying to get people to experience when they listen to your music? I don t think we have a concert expectation. We are just communicating. In a song you show your feelings but we don t want to force feelings. If they feel it, it works, it s amazing, and it is a positive thing. But we are not trying to manipulate people to feel any particular way. Have you played at festivals like Bumbershoot before? What do you like about playing at festivals? We have played Sasquatch and Block Party and a couple of other big ones like this. Free stuff is alwats great. It s fun seeing other bands that we know, getting to see them perform and chat with everyone. It s like summer camp. CHASTITY BELT How did you come up with the band name Chastity Belt? We thought it would be a funny name for a band so we started chanting it at parties and it just stuck. We were all were friends in college. I was really into the Strokes in middle school, lots of Fleetwood Mac, Death Cab for Cutie, Elliot Smith. What themes//feels are you trying to get people to experience when they listen to your 2015 album Time to go Home? Whatever they interept. We aren t trying to make people feel any particular way. They can interpret it however they want. We are just sharing our feelings and hope that connects with others. albums covers from chastity belt What makes it different from your other albums? We were in different places in our lives when wrote it. We are still writing and singing about our experiences but our mind set is different. Our first album was written while we were still in college and now we have graduated and doing new things which brings new emotions and new realities.

THIRD EYE BLIND KYRZ lead guiatar photo by: natalie miano albums covers from third eye blind I think I need to let yall in on a little secret. I AM OBSESSED WITH 3EB!!!!!!!! I have now seen them a total of 5 times and can t wait until I get to see them again. On a 14 hour car ride to Iowa I listened to Semi-Charmed Life and Semi-Charmed Life only the whole time. At their Portland show I sprained my wrist from crying, falling, and rocking out to hard. When I found out I got an interview with Kryz from 3eb a couple thoughts raced through my head. I thought should I ask can I be your crystal baller? Should I wear my 3eb shirt from the first time I saw them? Is it inappropriate to ask why are you so awesome? Can you sign my face? Can we get tattoos together? Can we hang later? How do I not cry during the interview? WHAT DO I DO WHEN I START CRYING DURNING THE INTER- VIEW??? I did not cry thank god but I did have a great time talking to Kryz: What are your plans for the last night of your tour? We are going to get wrecked. You are coming out with a new EP on October 7. What is that going to be like? Fantastic. I mean it is. We have this new idea. We are just to going to fucking record and every time we have a collection of songs that thematically go together we are going to put it out on an EP. As opposed to working years on one album. All the songs are done for the EP. Expect for one part of one song. What do you like about playing at Festivals? We love playing at festivals. We always steal the crowd. It is great because we play for a bunch of people who kind of, sorta, maybe have heard of us, its kind of word of mouthy, so as a result we end up with a huge crowd. We decided to focus on festivals this year because we did a co summer tour with Dashboard Confessional last year and wanted to do something different. So we did festivals. You name it we did it. This is the last festival of the summer. *stop interview and Kryz looks at my notepad*.. awh well isn t that s cute the way you wrote our name out. ***screaming internally**** What is your favorite song to play? fuck off. its the same answer all the time Nooo what I mean is aren t yall sick of playing like Jumper and Semi-Charmed Life what do you actually enjoy playing? No not at all. When you play it live. As soon as you hear the drums. The crowd goes wild and there is nothing like it. A lot of people don t know this but yall are very political and sing about very current and prominent issues. With songs like Non Dairy Creamer and Cop vs Phone Girl. Why do you think it is important that you tackle and sing about those issues? Because of Stephen. He writes all the lyrics. He is an artist in the purest sense that reacts to what he sees and hears. We had the whole thing with Cleveland when the RNC was on. We were playing at the charity called Musicians on Called. The RNC thing was happening in Cleveland that night. And we figured there would be a lot of republicans at the show. And we have republican fans, whatever, who gives a shit. But when we got on stage he immediately turned and around threw out the set list, which was not uncommon at all, and he was like fuck that we re playing Non-Dairy Creamer. He wanted to play his most political song like One in Ten and the only hit we played was Jumper because it is about a gay man who jumped off a bridge. The political thing is all Stephen. Not saying that we do not support those beliefs or anything. At the show he said raise your hand if you believe in science and people boomed him? Like what is that? This isn t a belief system. Your latest album Dopamine in 2015 became a big hit and it still sounds like 90s rock. Why do you think people still come out to your shows? Why is 90s rock still in? Well there is nothing like Everything is Easy on any of the other albums. But when Stephen sings over anything it is Third Eye Blind. We are branching out from rock a little bit just wait until you listen to the new EP. I don t know if 90s rock is still in but we are. I think mainly because of Stephen s lyrical content. It still resonates with people. The albums just keep getting passed down. Musical Influences? Prince was a big influence. It was the reason I started playing guitar. RIP that was the worst thing ever. Just a tragic accident.

How did you get involved with the music scene up in Seattle? I moved up here about 7 years ago for Cornish College of the Arts but ended up leaving because I wanted to branch out and see for myself what else was out there. It was a great place for the time being and I stayed there for just the right amount of time. I stayed in Seattle since connecting with artists but I am moving to L.A. at the beginning of the new year. MAIAH MANSER photo by: bumbershoot 2016 There are a lot of Seattle artist playing at Bumbershoot. Who are some Seattle artists that you enjoy? Well I love my girl Shaprece. We are going on tour down the west coast this fall. I don t think we are making a stop in Eugene but we will be in Portland at Holocene. DoNormaal a great new rapper on the scene. Those are the only two that are coming to mind at the moment but there are so many more. Musical Inspiration? I take inspiration from just about anything. I get obsessed with a certain artist at a certain time. Artists that I m influence by..hmm its lengthy. Recently I have been very inspirited by the new Kanye and Chance the Rapper. Also Beyonce and Rihanna s new albums. I mean come on. Incredible. Kanye Life of Pablo or Chance the Rapper Coloring Book? Life or death? I do love Chance s album but Life of Pablo. I m into the darker side of music and I felt like Life of Pablo did that well. Have you played at festivals like Bumbershoot before? What do you like about playing at festivals? I played at the main stage at the Capital Hill Block Party. That was sweet. Before that I did Big Building Bash, which was very cool. It was in a big warehouse. There are so many different people coming out to see these shows. Most of them are coming to see particular artists but maybe they end up at your show and there like oh I dig this too. They are great ground for exploration of music. I hope to see some artists after my show. I want to see Tame Impala and Shaprece for sure. Working on anything new? I have a new EP coming out soon that s been ready since March but I am going to release the first song on October 1st. It is called Second Skin and the music video will be coming out first.
