Melbourne Ring Cycle 2016 21 November-16 December 2016 ARTS CENTRE MELBOURNE 1 1

Welcome Wagner s Ring Cycle is one of the most celebrated works in the history of opera and Melbourne is proud to again host Opera Australia s stunning production. Following the national and international acclaim of the 2013 Melbourne performances, audiences will again delight in this epic work with its exceptional production qualities and first-class cast and musicians. Like many of our state s major cultural events, it is an Australian exclusive. Victoria is renowned for the creativity and diversity of its cultural life and visitors will have plenty to enjoy during their stay. The Victorian Government is proud to be partnering with Opera Australia, Maureen and Tony Wheeler, and other sponsors and supporters in presenting the Melbourne Ring Cycle. It is events like this that contribute to Victoria s reputation as Australia s creative heartland, and its premier destination for arts, culture and major events. I m sure you will enjoy this memorable production. The Hon Daniel Andrews MP Premier of Victoria I have never failed to be moved by this amazing work. Opera Australia and Neil Armfield s production of The Ring in Melbourne was one of my life s highlights, amongst many highlights in a life lived travelling and experiencing the best that opera has to offer all around the world. To have the opportunity to experience this again constitutes an almost embarrassment of riches. To those of you who saw this Ring in 2013, welcome back, I am sure we will discover many moments that we missed last time and much more to contemplate and enjoy. To those of you who are coming to this production for the first time, you are in for such a treat. Visually and narratively this ranks as one of the great Rings. The singers and musicians are the best anywhere in the world and we are privileged to have the chance to see what may be the last staging of this beautiful Ring. Maureen Wheeler AO To really appreciate The Ring, one needs to be immersed in the total experience. In 2013, Opera Australia embarked on its first Ring journey. It was an extraordinary adventure for every member of the Company and I believe a truly profound and revelatory experience for everyone involved. In 2016, we are setting out again to climb that Everest of opera. It will doubtless be challenging, exhausting, stimulating and hopefully richly rewarding. We have engaged some truly wonderful singers for this Melbourne Ring. Some of them, like the renowned Greer Grimsley, as Wotan and The Wanderer, will be making their Australian debuts. Lise Lindstrom will be singing her first full Ring Cycle as Brünnhilde. Stefan Vinke returns with his phenomenal performance as Siegfried and Daniel Sumegi, Jacqueline Dark and Warwick Fyfe reprise their outstanding interpretations. We are also thrilled to welcome back Pietari Inkinen to conduct this mammoth work and after his tremendous success in 2013, we are all anticipating another exceptional and illuminating performance. Neil Armfield has already been working on various aspects of the staging for 2016 and after his insightful interpretation of 2013, I am sure he will have some more intriguing discoveries in store. To really appreciate The Ring, one needs to be immersed in the total experience. It is different on every occasion; it embraces you musically, emotionally and dramatically and it leaves an indelible imprint on your soul. It is an undertaking of epic proportions and over the four operas which make up the cycle, it gradually reveals to us the complex intellectual and emotional challenges which are central to the human experience. We hope that you will join us for The Melbourne Ring and that you too will feel inspired by the genius which emanated from the mind of Richard Wagner in what is truly one of the greatest achievements by an individual artist. Creative Team This production by the country s finest theatre director with his brilliant creative team, and superb young maestro Pietari Inkinen with his equally remarkable band, is one of which opera patrons and all Australians can feel proud. Conductor Pietari Inkinen Director Neil Armfield Associate Director Kate Champion Set Designer Robert Cousins Costume Designer Alice Babidge Lighting Designer Damien Cooper Associate Conductor Anthony Legge Sound Designer Jim Atkins Opera Australia Chorus Melbourne Ring Orchestra The Ring Cycle requires huge orchestral forces. The Melbourne Ring Orchestra will unite 135 musicians. Opera Australia s Melbourne performance partner, Orchestra Victoria, will be joined by outstanding musicians from national and international orchestras, including the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra. Limelight Armfield is a wonderful storyteller and this was a Ring that brought the characters down to earth in a way that I ve not seen before. There are those who feel The Ring, because of its sprawling nature, needs an over-arching concept, a giant metaphor, to bring it into focus. And, of course, there are still those who feel that The Ring must have real gods, mermaids, dragons etc, even if they wind up looking completely ridiculous, as they always do. By avoiding both the concept and the original intent baggage, Armfield gave us a Ring that is very much about us: you and me Inkinen knows how to draw a sensuous, surging sound from the orchestra, his balances were superb, and there was an indefinable energy to it all. He has the potential to become one of the great Wagner conductors of this century. The verdict was pretty much unanimous: this was one of the best Rings anywhere in a long time. Die Walküre The second opera in The Ring Cycle holds special appeal for audiences with its dramatic power and remarkable music, including the famous Ride of the Valkyries. After Das Rheingold s rarefied realm of gods and monsters, in Die Walküre Wagner plunges headlong into the highly emotional world of humanity. Love animates the actions of all the leading characters: Wotan, who wants to protect his children but is forced to forsake them; his twin offspring Siegmund and Sieglinde who fall passionately in love; and his warrior daughter Brünnhilde, who defies Wotan by trying to protect the twins. He punishes her by stripping her of her immortality and putting her to sleep surrounded by a wall of flames that only the greatest hero can brave. In the space of a single, majestic, two-and-a-half hour musical span, Wagner immerses you in a mysterious, primordial world of scheming gods, misshapen dwarfs, alluring maidens and fearsome monsters. The struggle for power and wealth in Das Rheingold irrevocably alters the order of the universe and determines the course of the entire saga. Spurned by the three beautiful Rhinemaidens, the Nibelung dwarf Alberich steals their gold and forges it into a ring that gives unlimited power to its wearer. When Wotan, the lord of the gods, steals the ring, Alberich curses it and all who wear it. iegfried Siegfried The Ring Cycle s third part is intensely focused on the fortunes of a single figure. Siegfried charts the rise of the son of Siegmund and Sieglinde into the greatest hero of the age. Following Sieglinde s death, Siegfried has been raised by the dwarf Mime, brother of Alberich. Although Mime loathes Siegfried, he hopes Siegfried will kill the dragon Fafner, guardian of the all-powerful ring. Instead, Siegfried kills both Fafner and Mime, claims the ring for himself and sets off to find the sleeping Brünnhilde. Siegfried braves the flames, wakes her with a kiss and the two declare their powerful feelings of love in one of the most thrilling and extended love duets in all opera. All seems lost after love is betrayed by naked ambition and villains outsmart heroes. Siegfried is unwittingly ensnared in a plot by Gunther and Gutrune and their half-brother, who wants the ring for himself. Siegfried drinks a magic potion that makes him forget Brünnhilde and fall in love with Gutrune. Enraged by his infidelity, Brünnhilde joins forces with Hagen, who murders Siegfried. However, on discovering the truth about Siegfried s betrayal, Brünnhilde takes drastic action. In her Immolation Scene, she redeems the world by leaping into Siegfried s funeral pyre and returning the ring to its rightful owners. The Rhinemaidens joyfully reclaim their gold and drag Hagen into the depths and the old world order is swept away by flood and fire.
