Topic Sentences If you want to write great body paragraphs, you must have great topic sentences! The topic sentence is the very first sentence in each paragraph. The topic sentence is used to inform the reader of what details are in the rest of the paragraph.

Example #1 Living in a spaceship for three months was difficult. What s the topic? What s the rest of the paragraph going to be about?

Example #2 My best friend is always very lucky. What s the topic? What s the rest of the paragraph going to be about?

Example #3 No one could foresee the consequences of John s actions. What s the topic? What will the rest of the paragraph be about?

Example #4 Being the child of divorced parents can have its good moments and its bad ones. What s the topic? What s the rest of the paragraph going to be about?

Example #5 My eighth-grade Language Arts teacher was the best teacher I ever had. What s the topic? What s the rest of the paragraph going to be about?

Supporting Sentences Supporting sentences are written to support the topic sentence. They are the sentences that follow the topic sentence in a paragraph. Supporting sentences are in between the topic sentence and the concluding sentence. They are used to give us the information that we, the reader, need. It is a great place to insert quotes from credible sources! Supporting sentences are vital to the success of the complete paragraph!

Example #6 Please write down an appropriate topic sentence for the following supporting sentences. He was 18 feet tall and at least nine feet around the middle, and he had a tremendous appetite. He could kill a half-dozen cows and as many sheep and pigs, and he would carry them all home for one meal.

Topic Sentence Idea Everyone in the town was afraid of the giant. He was 18 feet tall and at least nine feet around the middle, and he had a tremendous appetite. He could kill a half-dozen cows and as many sheep and pigs, and he would carry them all home for one meal.

Example #7 Please write down a topic sentence for these supporting sentences. They tried hiding their farm animals, but then the giant Cormorant carried off the people themselves for food. So the countryfolk let him take their cattle as he pleased, for no one dared fight the 18-foot giant.

Topic Sentence Idea The people of the town found that it was hopeless to try to fight the giant. They tried hiding their farm animals, but then the giant Cormorant carried off the people themselves for food. So the countryfolk let him take their cattle as he pleased, for no one dared fight the 18-foot giant.

Example #8 Please write down a topic sentence for these supporting sentences. He took with him a dark lantern, a hunting horn, an axe, and a shovel. In the middle of the path that led to the giant s cave, Jack dug a pit 20 feet deep and 20 feet long. Then he covered the pit with branches and dirt. When the hole was thus cleverly hidden, Jack took out his horn, blew a loud blast, and then quickly hid behind a tree.

Topic Sentence Idea Jack, with the use of his tools, made some preparations to stand up and fight the giant. He took with him a dark lantern, a hunting horn, an axe, and a shovel. When the hole was thus cleverly hidden, Jack took out his horn, blew a loud blast, and then quickly hid behind a tree.

Example #9 Please write down a topic sentence for these supporting sentences. The countryfolk sang and danced for joy at the giant s death. They gave Jack a wonderful sword, and from then on he was known from one end of the country to the other as Jack the Giant Killer. Of course, with a name like that, Jack was the enemy of every evil giant alive.

Topic Sentence Idea Everyone in the town celebrated Jack s success at conquering the giant Cormorant! The countryfolk sang and danced for joy at the giant s death. They gave Jack a wonderful sword, and from then on he was known from one end of the country to the other as Jack the Giant Killer. We wonder what the mystery is.

Tryouts are only one week away, but Jake still doesn t know whether he will be trying out for the hockey team. He really wants to be on the team, and he has practiced very hard for a long time. Example #12 The following paragraph is missing a concluding sentence. Please write a concluding sentence for the paragraph. One sunny morning at dawn, four of my friends and I went fishing. When we go fishing, we like to awaken while it s still dark in order to have an early start on all the other fishermen. The night before this trip, everyone slept at my house. Jason, Jake, Peter, John, and I all slept in our sleeping bags. We were so excited about the trip that we had difficulty sleeping. Actually, we stayed up until dawn. When it was time to go, the five of us attached the equipment we needed on our bikes and then went into the house to get the 15 sandwiches that my mother had made. (My mother had made enough sandwiches so that we would have three a piece.)

Example #13 The following paragraph is missing a concluding sentence. Please write a concluding sentence for the paragraph. Whenever my friend, her sister, and I walked down the street, we always tried to avoid stepping on the cracks of the sidewalk. No one ever said that we shouldn t; we just didn t. Once my sister, who likes to follow us, ran in front of us and purposely stepped on every crack in the sidewalk. Somehow my friend, her sister, and I felt that our luck changed after that. I know it s weird, but we couldn t seem to win one soccer game all summer long.

Transitions Transitions are how you connect each paragraph together. Each paragraph is like a bead. Each one is nice by itself, but in order to make a necklace, you need something to string the beads together. Without the string, the necklace will fall apart. Your paper is like that. Without the transitions, your research paper will not hold together. The transition connects the last sentence of a paragraph with the first sentence of the next paragraph.

Transitions (continued) Connecting Words: You pick out one or two important words from the last sentence in one paragraph to use in the first sentence of the next paragraph. For example this is the last sentence of a paragraph and the first sentence of the next paragraph... EXAMPLE Do you see how I did that? I used the words time and outside in both the last sentence of one paragraph and the first sentence of the next paragraph.

Tarzan!!! Boy to Man This movie gives an example of a transition. Without this 3-minute song, we wouldn t understand who the man is in the movie. We need to know that Tarzan grew up. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wchpfuwd6u
