OT Guide I About this Guide The number of Orchestral Tools is constantly growing and covers all instrumental families of the orchestra, with some collections even branching out into non-orchestral instruments. This Guide describes all contained articulations as well as their technical properties (velocity layers, Round Robins, and many more). This document is a special version of the Guide that only contains features applicable to the collections listed below. You can download the full Guide that applies to all Orchestral Tools collections in our Helpdesk. The following table lists all collections covered by this Guide with their current Capsule version as well as the minimum Kontakt version. Collection Name MA1 Metropolis Ark 1 Collection 1.1 Capsule 2.5 Kontakt Player 5.5.1+ Important This Guide does not cover the general installation, usage and features of Orchestral Tools collections. These topics are explained step by step in the respective User Guides and Installation Guides, which you can find in your collection's Documentation folder. You can also find them in our Helpdesk. 2 About this Guide

OT Guide II Introduction Welcome to the Orchestral Tools Guide! Orchestral Tools provides high-quality sampled instruments for composers. Thanks to our Capsule Scripting Framework developed in-house, all Orchestral Tools collections look and work in a very similar way. names, labeling and all technical terms are identical in every collections, so you will find it easy to find your way around. This Guide describes all articulations as well as their technical features and is organized as follows: - The general Se r ie s Ov e r v ie w shows you all available Orchestral Tools Series', which group our collections into broader categories. - Following this is the respective Se r ie s Ov e r v ie w Page of one particular Series, which lists all available collections by name and gives suggestions for expansions options. - Each individual collection then has its own C ol l e ction Ov e r v ie w page, which describes the general content of the collection as well as its most important features at a glance. - This is followed by the Instr ume nts Section, which lists all instruments (or sections) contained in the collection with a short description of tone, scope or other pertinent information. - The Ar ticul ations Section finally lists all articulations in detail along with all their properties. 3 Introduction 2017 Orchestral Tools Schwarzer & Mantik GmbH

OT Guide III Recording and Concept We are happy to have found a sonic home for our collections at the Teldex Scoring Stage in Berlin. The large recording stage at Teldex looks back on a long tradition of many well known and Grammy award winning recordings. Famous orchestras, like the Berlin Philharmonics and great film composers from the USA and Europe trust and love the wide and clear acoustics of this room. One of the best sounding scoring stages in Europe, this room together with a fantastic complement of legendary microphones catapults our work to a new level of orchestral sampling. The quality of a sampled collection begins with the recording. Every Orchestral Tools collection is recorded at 96khz with state of the art equipment. The full editing and post-production process uses these 96khz recordings without downsampling. We very rarely denoise our recordings and never treat them in any other automated way. If tuning is needed, it is done by ear without resorting to tuning algorithms. Only at the very end, right before the samples are mapped into their instruments, the content is converted to 48khz for best use of resources. Our goal is to provide a set of tools that easily adapts to any workflow and creates a coherent sonic representation of the orchestra. The main way we achieved this is by recording every instrument in its orchestral position. All collections come pre-panned and pre-mixed with their respective volumes balanced. If there are multiple types of the same instrument, they are recorded in slightly different positions, yet still in their general section area. The different snare drums in Berlin Percussion, for example, have been recorded slightly spread over the general "snare drum area" within the percussion section. This allows you to have a very wide and full sound when combining multiple instruments. We deliberately choose to also record non-traditional instruments as belonging to a symphonic setup, like electric guitars and a drumset in our Metropolis Ark Series. Modern media scoring introduces a host of new instruments into the established orchestral lineup and we feel these instruments deserve the same care and precision in fitting them into the symphonic sound as their traditional counterparts. All collections feature a number of microphone positions commonly used in orchestral recording. The position of these microphones is identical in every collection, which means that for example the Tree is much nearer to the string section that it is to the percussion section (because the percussion section is situated at the back of the orchestra). This enabled lively acoustics that come pre-mixed for the respective stage position. The choice of mic positions also depends greatly on the instrument. Some instruments, especially in the percussion section, benefit greatly from a M/S position to enable accurately positioning the sound source. Wherever possible, similar instruments use the same mapping scheme so it is usually possible to transfer MIDI data from one instrument to another easily. This is especially important and useful for percussion. 4 Recording and Concept

OT Guide IV Metropolis Ark Series The Metropolis Ark Series brings Orchestral Tools into a new era: This series unites collections crafted to ease working on tight deadlines. Special sections made up of unconventional instrument combinations, the inclusion of non-orchestral instruments into the orchestral body and a focus on making ready to use tools available eminently playable out of the box make Metropolis Ark Series collections a great way to expand any sonic palette. The following table lists all Metropolis Ark Series Collections currently released - underlined names jump to a description of its content and unique features. You can download a version of this Guide that applies to all released Collections on our Helpdesk. When you load any Metropolis Ark Series patch inside Kontakt, the instrument slot will show an icon representing the series volume as shown below. OT Guide 4.1 Metropolis Ark 1 Metropolis Ark 1 not only marks Orchestral Tools' foray into the wonderful world of epic sampling, but also introduces a Choir into the Teldex ambience, completely positioned and ready to seamlessly blend into any arrangement. We deliberately chose to also record non-traditional instruments as belonging to a symphonic setup, like electric guitars and a drumset. Modern media scoring introduces a host of new instruments into the established orchestral lineup and we feel these instruments deserve the same care and precision in fitting them into the symphonic sound as their traditional counterparts. Metropolis Ark 1 is inspired by a cinematic monument from 1927 - The first ever epic science fiction motion picture of our time. A Berlin original which inspired us to preserve all its strength, greatness and bold exceptionalism in a monumentally powerful collection to bring it back into the latest cinematic soundtrack productions. Metropolis Ark 1 contains a huge Orchestra, Choir, Electric Guitars, Percussion, a Grand Piano and a magnificent Drumset, all recorded with first call musicians at the Teldex Scoring Stage. Metropolis Ark 1 features the loudest imaginable dynamics starting from mf upwards to ffff. Everything is designed to be loud, to be bold and boundary-shatteringly epic. This Collection opens a whole new world for Orchestral Tools, who are well known for their Berlin Series, a virtual Orchestra that set a new standard and is used by many high-profile film composers in Hollywood and around the world. A unique sound There is one vision and everything is built around it: Special sections like 4 Contra Bassoons playing in unison, a Bass Trombone Ensemble, a Cimbasso Ensemble or 12 Basses + 6 Celli playing together in octaves. Metropolis Ark 1 includes different French Horn ensembles: A big 9 piece Horn Section for soaring, thick Horn melodies and a smaller 3 piece Horn Ensembles, specifically designed to play chords. Together with uncomparable Powerchords recorded wet at the scoring stage with two different Guitars and a sinister massive Choir singing at the highest dynamics, this Collection will raise your compositions to a whole new level. A flexible working tool Instead of pre-mixed sections, Metropolis Ark 1 offers pure and unprocessed instrument groups to give you all the flexibility to arrange your own orchestrations. Extensive Sets additionally offer Swells, Crescendos, Glissandos, 2 different lengths of Marcato, Shorts, etc. on more than 80GB of compressed sample material. Metropolis Ark 1 marks the next generation of Fortissimo and it is a Re v ol ution of E pic in one single box. 6

OT Guide Instrumentation and Recording Metropolis Ark 1 contains recorded sections grouped into four "Districts", which are divided into patches containing a single articulation as well as multi articulation patches. You will find all of these patches inside the Instruments folder. The collection contains the following sections, as they appear in your instruments folder: District I - Orchestra 01. Finkenstein Strings (High) 02. Wolfenstein Strings (Low) 03. Holbein Bassoons a4 04. Barnak Contrabassoons a4 05. Kommandanten Trumpets a4 06. Schwarzdorn Horns a9 07. Rotdorn Horns a3 08. Friedrich Bass Trombones a3 09. Koenigsberger Cimbassi a3 10. Hindenburg Tubas a3 District II - Choir 01. Viktoria Choir (High) 02. Aarauer Choir (Low) District III - Percussion 01. Kopernikus Percussion 02. Drake Piano District IV - Band 01. Kornmesser Guitar Ensemble 02. Kornmesser Guitar (L) 03. Kornmesser Guitar (R) 04. Troppauer Bass (Dry) 05. Gardeschützen Drumset Metropolis Ark 1 features Multi Patches in a separate folder for all sections and instruments. You have free choice between five microphone positions, Spot, Close, Tree, Surround and A/B. The Band patches have additional DI and Amp positions. These microphone positions are switchable in the GUI and can be controlled via MIDI CC. Additionally, all core articulations have been recorded with multiple velocity layers for realistic dynamics. All samples have their natural panning. 7 2017 Orchestral Tools Schwarzer & Mantik GmbH

OT Guide 4.1.1 Instruments The sections and instruments* in Metropolis Ark 1 are designed to be LOUD and lend a massive foundation to any track. This section briefly explains the individual instruments and points out usage scenarios and expansion options. District I - Orchestra The Orchestra District forms the backbone of Metropolis Ark 1 and contains a number of big and epic ensembles that are designed to work well on their own, but especially as an addition and contrast to our other collections recorded at Teldex. Finkenstein Strings (High) The Finckenstein Strings are made of a massive 14 Violins and 10 Violas and feature full 8va Legato, Spiccato and Col Legno, complemented by Unison Sustains and Tremolo. Added to this come several foundation articulations and effects. Wolfenstein Strings (Low) The Wolfenstein String consist of 8 Celli and 10 Basses and continue the strings line-up with a generous complement of 8va articulations including Legato, Portato Long and Short and many more. Holbein Bassoons a4 The Holbein Bassoons are made of four bassoons and provide essential articulations. Setting the theme for all Orchestral District instruments, these articulations work well as a larger complement to other sections or solo instruments (for example from Berlin Woodwinds), but also on our own as one giant section. Barnak Contrabassoons a4 The four Barnak Contrabassoons provide the same articulations as the Holbein Bassoons. Kommandanten Trumpets a4 Four Trumpets are combined in the Kommandanten Trumpets and provide Staccatissimo Clusters in addition to standard articulations as well as some special ones. Schwarzdorn Horns a9 The Schwarzdorn Horns are made of nine French Horns and form a giant ensemble with full Legato, essential articulations and effects. They are best played monophonically for epic leading melodies. Rotdorn Horns a3 Complementing the Schwarzdorn Horn, the Rotdorn Horns feature three horns and are the perfect companion to the 9 Horn section when playing chords or more laid-back arrangements. Friedrich Bass Trombones a3 Three Bass Trombones provide a very unique timbre with essential articulations. Koenigsberger Cimbassi a3 The big three Cimbassi ensemble comes with the regular standard articulations and packs a punch, yet provides definition. Hindenburg Tubas a3 8

OT Guide For ultimate low end, the three Hindenburg Tubas feature essential articulations. District II - Choir Metropolis Ark 1 has two choirs, High and Low, each with Legato, Sustain and multi-syllable Staccato and Marcato as well as FX. Viktoria Choir (High) The Viktoria High Choir features five Sopranos and five Altos. Aarauer Choir (Low) The Aarauer Low Choir features five Tenors and five Basses. District III - Percussion District III contains orchestral and epic percussion and a special fff Piano. Kopernikus Percussion MA1's Kopernikus Percussion contains an Epic Percussion Ensemble patch with an assortment of percussion instruments as well as a processed Epic Percussion Hits patch with a lot of processed "hybrid" hits. Drake Piano The Drake Piano is a special piano patch with fff dynamics for percussive hits cutting through the densest orchestrations and is intended as a member of the Percussion, not a solo piano. District IV - Band The Band District brings Electric Guitars, Bass and a Drumset to the Teldex Stage and serves great for hybrid and crossover productions. Kornmesser Guitar Ensemble Put together from the Kornmesser Guitars and the Troppauer Bass, the Guitar Ensemble features pre-mixed and pre-panned L and R Guitars with the Bass layered, all controllable with various mic positions. Kornmesser Guitar Left and Right The Left and Right Guitars are intended to be used as a double-tracked pair. Troppauer Bass The Electric Bass is recorded dry wirth an extra overdrive mic position and two Amp positions for ultimate clarity and punch in the low end. Gardeschützen Drumset This GM-mapped drumset answers the question what happens when a drumset is put into the Teldex stage. *In case you did not know - All sections and instruments in Metropolis Ark 1 are named after street names near the Teldex Studio in Berlin/Germany. Now you know. Expansion Options: For those moments where some more restraint and a finer brush are in order, the Berlin Series collections 9 2017 Orchestral Tools Schwarzer & Mantik GmbH

OT Guide will nicely complement Metropolis Ark 1, being recorded in the same room and with identical microphone positioning. Metropolis Ark 2 brings very quiet instruments played in a LOUD way to the Metropolis Series. 10
