Grading Policy Performances (900 pts per concert) Performances are the largest grade that we have in orchestra. This is a performance based class, and, in order to satisfy the requirements for the class, students must participate in ALL performances. Students must sign out after a concert to verify attendance at the performance. The attendance policy will follow all BCS guidelines. Please note that work, car trouble, and lack of transportation are not considered an excused absence. Students must notify Mr. Neal in writing no later than 2 weeks in advance if they expect to miss a performance. Approved absences will require a make up assignment. After school rehearsal attendance will comprise 300 points of this grade. Correct concert attire will comprise 100 points of this grade. Approved Concert Dress: Ladies: Formal long black. Full length, long sleeve tops with school appropriate neckline. Bottoms must be full length with no slits, cuts, etc. Cellists must wear pants. Black closed toe shoes required and must be paired with black stockings/hose/socks. Heels should be no taller than 3. Gentlemen: Long sleeve black button up shirt. Long black slacks with a black belt. Black socks. Black dress shoes. Solid white long tie. Tests and Concert Reviews (100 pts per test) Playing tests will consist of a recording being submitted through SmartMusic or email by a particular date and time specified by Mr. Neal. Students will be informed of material to be tested prior to test day unless the nature of the test requires otherwise. Quarterly concert reviews for the honors class fall under this category. See honors requirements for additional information. Participation (50 pts weekly) Participation grades will be based on student preparedness (practice, materials, instrument) and participation. Failure to have all materials or choosing not to actively participate will result in a lowered participation grade. Exceptions will be made for instruments undergoing repair and any other circumstances approved by Mr. Neal. Practice Logs (50 pts weekly) Students will be expected to turn in a practice log every week. Any practice log that has not been turned in by Friday will become a 0. Practice logs will be submitted through a Google form. Students and parents will receive a link to the form. To get full credit, students must practice a minimum of 210 minutes per week. This breaks down into 30 minutes per day. In order to accommodate busy schedules, students may move up to 20 minutes from one day to any other. This results in a daily minimum of 10 minutes practiced. Honors orchestra students have increased time requirements. See honors requirements for additional information. Written Work (75 pts per assignment) This includes all written work in the class. Examples include reflections on performances, music theory assignments, and listening exercises.
