They were joined, in the early 1870s, by their younger brother, Leopold. Furchgott and Brothers expanded to three stores in three cities: Charleston, South Carolina, Atlanta, Georgia, and Jacksonville, Florida. The Charleston store was renamed M. Furchgott and Sons when Max's three sons, Arthur (1884-1971), Melvin (1886-1960), and Oscar (1890-1949), joined the business. Max would leave the department store to his three sons after his death. After his brothers left to pursue opportunities elsewhere in South Carolina, Melvin continued to operate the store until its closing in 1933. For more detailed biographical information, see related materials in Special Collections. These include oral history interviews with Max Furchgott and Dale LeRoy Dreyfoos (Mss 1035-033), Robert F. Furchgott (Mss 1035-252, 256), and the Arthur C. Furchgott papers (Mss 1043).
