Dear Parents/Guardians: Welcome to the BAND! We appreciate your interest in being in the beginner band! We want you to know that we feel all students should get an opportunity to be in band! The beginning band program will be starting during the first week of school in August. The benefits of joining the band program include the development of greater selfconfidence, coordination and self-expression, in addition to a greater sense of responsibility, cooperation and teamwork. Many studies also show participation in music contributes to greater success in other classroom subjects. When your child joins band, they will need an instrument. Poteet ISD provides the following instruments only: Tuba, Baritone, French horn, Trombone, and Bass Clarinet. These instruments are available on a first come, first serve basis. Other instruments such as flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone and percussion, must be rented or purchased on your own. High School Music Service (HSMS) in San Antonio offer a special rental plan, which is very affordable. This is a safe investment because the rental fees can be applied to the purchase of the instrument at any time. There are other music companies throughout San Antonio that you may use, but HSMS comes to Poteet on a weekly basis all year long for your convenience. They will be at the Poteet High School Band Hall on Wednesday, September 9, 2015 from 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm with instruments, and they will also be able to discuss rental and purchase options. You and your child should decide the top three choices of instruments that they would like to play. Each student should fill out the Beginner Band Information Sheet and return it to me or Mr. Solis. Most students will receive their first choice of instrument, depending on availability and numbers. Additionally, students wishing to play percussion will have to pass a percussion test in order to be selected. Please visit our website poteetaggieband.weebly.com to view videos of each instrument being played and talked about. Just click on Beginning Band. Please feel free to call Mr. Solis at (830) 742-3320 or Mr. Munoz at (830) 742-3571 x1821 for any questions or if you have special needs regarding getting an instrument for your child. We feel it is very important that all students get an opportunity to be in band! We are looking forward to working with you and your child in band! See you on Wednesday, September 9, 2015!
