Ancient Sumer ANSWER KEY Why do historians classify ancient Sumer as a civilization? P R E V I E W Scientists sometimes describe a society or a group of humans as highly civilized. Explain what you think it means to be highly civilized, and provide specific examples. Answers will vary. Expect that students may not fully understand what a civilization is. However, their answers should be well-written and clear. Accept all reasonable answers. Section 2 Complete the flowchart below. In each box, write the name of a Sumerian invention that helped create a stable food supply. Explain what the invention was and how the Sumerians used it. Section 3 In the ladder below, list and describe the people who lived at each status level of the Sumerian social structure. Next to each description, draw a symbol that represents that class. TOP Priests, landowners, and government officials had the nicest homes and lived in the center of the city. Symbols will vary but may include luxury items or money. MIDDLE Merchants and artisans made and sold tools and luxury items. Farmers and fishers lived in small houses at the edge of the city. Symbols will vary but may include a farm or a merchant stand. BOTTOM Slaves were often enemies that the Sumerians had captured during war. Symbols will vary but may include chains or slaves. List the artifacts that show evidence of social structure in Sumer. Section 4 Why did religious beliefs in Sumer make the government more powerful? Religious beliefs made the government more powerful because the Sumerian people obeyed the will of their gods, and the gods chose the kings. List all the duties of the government in Sumerian city-states. Circle the duty you think was the most important, and explain why you chose this duty. Government duties include recording and enforcing laws, collecting taxes, building temples, maintaining and patrolling irrigation canals, and leading the army. A religious system includes worship practices and a set of beliefs. Why was religion important in Sumer? Religion was important in Sumer because it influenced every part of daily life. Draw and label a picture that shows two ways Sumerians expressed their religious beliefs. It also shows that the Sumerians used the cylinder seal as a tool to create the image on clay.
