WE LCOME We are delighted to present the 2018/19 Hull City Hall Classics season in partnership with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Hull Philharmonic Orchestra. The series will once again feature nine outstanding concerts bringing world class music to the City of Hull. The acclaimed Royal Philharmonic orchestra have curated 6 concerts which includes three visits from themselves as well as one of the finest international orchestras - the Russian Philharmonic Orchestra and a welcome return from one of the UK favourites, the Hallé Orchestra. This is complemented by three first class concerts from one of the nation s leading local symphony orchestras,. The series includes pre-show lectures curated by Dr Simon Desbruslais from Hull University as well as insightful pre-concert talks with key players at selected concerts (please see below for full details). We look forward to welcoming you to Hull City Hall Classics 2018/19 ROYAL Thursday 27 September 2018, 7.30pm Conductor: Barry Wordsworth Violin: Esther Yoo BEETHOVEN: Leonore Overture No.3 BRUCH: Violin Concerto No.1 BRAHMS: Symphony No.2 Sparkling tunes infuse Beethoven s ever-popular Leonore Overture No.3 before the RPO s 2018 Artist-in-Residence, Esther Yoo, takes centre stage for Bruch s much-loved masterpiece, full of musical fireworks and sparkling brilliance. Brahms Symphony No.2, a work of rich complexity and subtlety, closes the concert with its graceful melodies and magnificently radiant brass finale. HALLÉ Thursday 1 November 2018, 7.30pm Conductor: Mark Elder Piano: Francesco Piemontesi WEBER: Overture Oberon BEETHOVEN: Piano Concerto No.5 WAGNER: Lohengrin Preludes Act I and III WAGNER: Die Meistersinger Suite The concert opens with Weber s magical overture, Oberon, before the exceptionally expressive pianist, Francesco Piemontesi, performs Beethoven s emperor of a concerto. Then we hear two contrasting preludes from Lohengrin the first, serene, and the second, energetic. In a glorious climax, Sir Mark guides us through the intimacy and ceremony of Wagner s great comic masterpiece, Die Meistersinger.
HULL 1918: End Game: Armistice and Aftermath The final part of our triptych, covering the period from 1917 to the end of the war and beyond, following those stories that began in 1914. Saturday 24 November 2018, 7.00pm Conductor: Andrew Penny Beverley Chamber Choir New York Consort VAUGHAN WILLIAMS: Serenade to Music VAUGHAN WILLIAMS: Symphony No.3 The Pastoral (Second Movement: Lento Moderato) GUSTAV HOLST: The Planets The Planets by Holst had its first performance one hundred years ago in 1918. Vaughan Williams Pastoral Symphony was written during the war but not performed until 1921. Our spoken narrative reflects on the approaching end of the war from a Hull perspective using images and sounds with pre-recorded contributions from John and Jane Godber. The Serenade to Music was written for Sir Henry Wood s Jubilee in 1938, 80 years ago. Sir Henry was conductor of our orchestra for 16 years from 1923 to 1939. H U L L Saturday 23 February 2019, 7.30pm Guest Conductor: James Hendry Piano: Richard Uttley WEBER: Overture Der Freischütz SCHUMANN: Piano Concerto in A Minor BEETHOVEN: Symphony No.3 in E flat Major (The Eroica) We welcome Hull born conductor James Hendry as our guest; he has been working with Antonio Pappano at the Royal Opera House as a Jette Parker Young Artist. Richard Uttley joins him in Schumann s beautiful Piano Concerto. Meet the Artists 6.30pm James Hendry and Richard Uttley talk to Andrew Penny. ROYAL BBC Thursday 7 Feb 2019, 7.30pm Conductor: Duncan Ward Violin: Yury Revich SCHUMANN: Genoveva Overture MENDELSSOHN: Violin Concerto TCHAIKOVSKY: Symphony No.5 Schumann s Genoveva Overture opens this concert with restless, passionate strings and hunting calls from the horns before Yury Revich takes to the stage to perform Mendelssohn s tender and emotive Violin Concerto. Closing the concert is Tchaikovsky s grand Symphony No.5, which alternates between light and dark, melancholy and joy, in what is considered one of the best-loved symphonies of all time. Thursday 14 March 2019, 7.30pm Conductor: Vassily Sinaisky Soloist: Leonard Elschenbroich DVOŘÁK: Cello Concerto ELGAR: Symphony No.1 Vassily Sinaisky conducts the BBC Philharmonic as they return to Hull City Hall. Antonín Dvořák s Cello Concerto in B minor was premiered on 19 March 1896 in London and is the last solo concerto he composed. Former BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist Leonard Elschenbroich brings his passion and flair to this much loved staple of the solo repertoire. Edward Elgar s Symphony No.1, which the composer intended to reflect a wide experience of human life and a massive hope in the future, closes this evening s concert.

HULL Saturday 11 May 2019, 7.30pm Soloist: Timothy Ridout Conductor: Andrew Penny KERRIN TATMAN: Fantasy for Viola and Orchestra WALTON: Two Pieces from Henry V WALTON: Viola Concerto BRAHMS: Symphony No.1 in C Minor The outstanding young viola player Timothy Ridout, currently a YCAT Artist joins the orchestra for that brilliant virtuoso showpiece, the William Walton Concerto. He will also present the world premiere of local composer Kerrin Tatman s Fantasy for Viola and Orchestra. We are launching a cycle of all the Brahms Symphonies over four years with No.1.
