Dear Friends: Please join me for a season of exciting music-making one that fulfills my promise to the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra s Board of Trustees when I was chosen as Music Director. I promised to bring the FMSO to a new level of artistry so that the orchestra would be able to perform major repertoire at the highest level. I believe we have met this goal. I ve programmed a wide range of my very favorite music for this, my final season as Music Director music by Beethoven, Debussy, Shostakovich, Chopin, Britten, Copland, Mendelssohn, Stravinsky, Ravel, Mahler, Bartok and Haydn. This season will be much more than a fond farewell to the Fargo-Moorhead community. Conducting here feels like home, and my wife and I cherish the many friends we have made over these past years years that have passed much too quickly. But...as the German poet Heinrich Heine wrote: When words leave off, music begins. Let s celebrate the FMSO s 80 th season together let the music begin!

The Season of Farewells... If we are lucky, there are times in our lives that are graced by extraordinary individuals who leave their mark in a truly life-changing way. The Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra has been graced with two such individuals Music Director Bernard Rubenstein and Concertmaster Benjamin Sung. This will be Bernie s final year as our conductor, and Ben has recently accepted a position at Florida State University. Fortunately, Ben has arranged to come back this season to perform in four of the five Masterworks concerts, as well as a Chamber Music concert. Bernie and Ben both gave unselfishly of themselves in the artistry they brought to their positions, as well as being mentors, teachers, and contributors in countless ways to the region s cultural vibrancy. Their passion for music, the inspiration they instilled in others, and their enthusiastic embrace of our community will be a lasting legacy, and will leave nearly impossible shoes to fill. But fill them we must. The Conductor Search Committee is already at work preparing to select and present finalists for our next Music Director during the 2012-13 concert season. The 2013-14 concert season will feature the introduction of our new conductor, who will be personally involved in selecting our next concertmaster. This will be an unforgettable season of performances you won t want to miss a single one! Take this opportunity to become a season ticket subscriber and save money on tickets while you enjoy the very best live music-making that the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra has to offer.

Creativity, extraordinary artistic quality, playfulness and an unfailing ability to capture the essence of their subjects are the hallmarks of the work done by Haney s Photography, which was founded in 1977 by Gabe and Greg s father, James Haney.
