Sandy Public Library will be closed May 1-5, 2017, for staff and volunteers to prepare our collection for a technological upgrade. All programs scheduled will still take place in the community room, and we will reopen on May 5th at 5pm for Library Coffee House/First Friday. No Sandy or Hoodland items will be due during the closure; Sandy patron due dates will be automatically extended to May 7th, if the original due date was between May 1-5th. Holds will be automatically unsuspended when the library re-opens the week of May 7th. Thank you for your patience and flexibility during our upgrade!
What is RFID? RFID stands for radio frequency identification. RFID allows a stack of items to be checked in or out by radio frequency IDs as opposed to scanning individual barcodes, leading to faster checkout, improved materials security, and automated check-in processes. RFID has been successfully used in libraries in Asia, Europe, and North America for more than 15 years. In the Pacific Northwest, you ll find RFID in libraries in Multnomah County, Washington County, Fort Vancouver Regional Library District, Seattle, and many other communities. When will RFID technology be implemented? The goal for all libraries in Clackamas County is June 2017. We anticipate tagging materials in April-May and implementing the new self-checkout kiosks by June or July. Hoodland Library will be tagged on Sunday (4/30) when they are normally closed, and Sandy Library will be closed for approximately a week (5/1-5/5). What are the benefits of using RFID? RFID makes checkout faster than our current barcode scanner system. Library staff and volunteers will be able to track and sort materials more accurately. Staff can dedicate more time to assist patrons and offer additional programming. RFID tags will double as security tags for the libraries theft detection systems. Will staff lose their jobs to RFID automated systems? Staff will not be laid off by this change. In fact, RFID systems will improve staff working conditions and give us the ability to provide meaningful service to you instead of checking books in & out at a relentless pace! How do libraries use RFID? Libraries place RFID tags in each library item (book, CD, DVD, etc.) and these tags facilitate transactions like check-in and check-out. How are we paying for this? Sandy and Hoodland Libraries have budgeted for RFID for at least 2 budget cycles, and we will finally get to use this money! We have set aside $75,000 to cover the cost of tags and hardware. We also plan to do some small renovations at Sandy and Hoodland Library to help us utilize the efficiency of RFID. How is my privacy protected when RFID tags are used to identify library materials? The library s RFID tags will carry only unique numerical identifiers. No title, author, publisher information, patron name or use pattern can be found by reading an RFID tag placed in LINCC library materials. Clackamas County does not plan to use RFID-enabled library cards at this time. We will continue using barcoded patron cards for the foreseeable future. Are there any health effects associated with RFID? The World Health Organization (WHO) and many other organizations have conducted extensive research on the potential health effects of exposure to electromagnetic fields. WHO has concluded that at the frequency used by library RFID systems (13.56 MHz), there is no evidence of adverse effects to general health or pregnancy. Nor is there any record of interference with medical devices such as pacemakers. For more information, see WHO s detailed report at: www.who.int/peh-emf/about/ WhatisEMF/ en/index1.html If you have any questions, please ask us. Libraryassistants@ci.sandy.or.us or 503-668-5537
