Febrary 2018 COMMODORE S COMMENTS This year is off to a great start. We had a full house at the Tosa Lion s Club last month, and everyone came prepared with some awesome ideas to make 2018 as exciting as 2017. Sam Graubner led the planning session, and I think broke the record for getting the calendar fully populated. We were done in under an hour. Thanks Sam!! After many years of dedicated service to Milwaukee Boat Club, Bonnie and Pete Merryfield have decided to step down from their current roles in the club leadership. I would like to say special thanks to Bonnie for her many years of service as the Director of Membership and Pete for his tireless efforts as our Advertising Chair. Without their hard work, MBC would not be the organization it is today. With these key positions now open, we need a volunteer to lead the advertising effort. Pete has provided an outstanding transition package for the new Advertising Chair. This includes a letter template that will be sent to our advertisers and the schedule that needs to be hit so that we can go to press on time with the new 2018 MBC Directory. Per the bylaws, your board will need to appoint a replacement for the Membership Director to fill the time remaining in the current term. Tom Rach has indicated he would be willing to step into this role. Our next meeting will be Thursday February 15 th. The membership expressed interest in starting our monthly meetings earlier. Soooo on Thursday, the doors will open at 6:00 and the meeting will begin at 6:30. Mary and Connie have an Olympic agenda Please bring appetizers and dessert we will send out for pizza as well. Happy Valentine s Day!! SEAFARING WORDS IN EVERYDAY SPEECH Cranky... irritable In A Sea Grammar, Captain John Smith described a "crank-sided" ship as one that heels over too easily. Probably from the Dutch-Frisian word krengd, (laid over on its side) the term cranky describes a ship with low stability. Poet-diplomat John Russel Lowell, seemed preoccupied with nautical metaphors when he wrote, "There is no better ballast for keeping the mind steady as a keel, and saving it from all risk of crankiness, than business." Armed to the Teeth... well prepared A product of Victorian embellishment, the expression is sheer romanticism. In a speech to Parliament in 1849, English statesman Richard Cobden asked his colleagues, "Is there reason we should be armed to the teeth?" It is not known whether Cobden invented the expression or merely repeated one that had already been introduced to the realm of colloquial English. Hollywood -- primarily with the production of such films as United Artists" The Sea Hawk -- confirmed and preserved for subsequent generations the Victorian image of the daring buccaneer liberally armed with an assortment of weapons. This colorful colloquialism has crept into common usage as a reference to anyone who is well prepared and appropriately equipped. Stem to Stern... from one end to the other The stem is the foremost timber or steel member forming the bow of a vessel; the stern is the after end of the vessel. In Idylls of the King Tennyson described Arthur's barge as being "dark as a funeral scarf from stem to stern." When used ashore in the figurative sense, the expression stem to stern means thoroughness -- a search of a place from one end to the another.
