Theatre Awards may have stopped having funky dress codes for guests but the theatre community still turned up dressed to thrill. Making a splash, of course, were Glen Goei and Ivan Heng, who turned up as their version of Singapore Airlines stewardesses in kebayas. But others made a splash too, at the ceremony, held over lunch at the Four Seasons Hotel. The sitdown, four-course lunch in the hotel's elegantly appointed ballroom was a relaxed affair where colourful characters in the local theatre scene took centre stage for an afternoon of good food and company. With the sunlight streaming in from the full-length glass windows, the 113 guests laughed, hollered and clapped for the winners. It was an excellent opportunity to give out some Life! Theatre Awards prizes, a side dish honouring the best and most colourful personalities at the event. BEST ACCEPTANCE SPEECHES: CHUA ENLAI, 31 He won the Best Supporting Actor award for his role as Gwendolyn in The Importance Of Being Earnest. He said: "I just came from the airport. Unfortunately, I wasn't on the same plane as the two glamorous stewardesses we had before us. But the ride I had last year on stage with the Drama Centre was the most amazing flight I ever had. My mother, Lady Bracknell (played by Ivan Heng), and, of course, Glen - thank you so much for this journey. I had a great flight." BEST ACCEPTANCE SPEECHES: TRACIE PANG, 39 She spoke on behalf of her husband Adrian Pang, who won Best Actor for his role in the Singapore Repertory Theatre's production of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing. He was almost nude as Benedick in the play and plans to bare more in the upcoming production of The Full Monty, by his newly formed theatre group, Pangdemonium. She said: "The last time he won an award was also for another Singapore Repertory Theatre production called The Dresser. This time, he's won for undressing. And hopefully, if you like that kind of thing, you will come to see him again in The Full Monty. He just wishes to say thank you to everyone who enjoys his work." BEST DRESSED WOMEN
