GREETINGS A FEW WORDS FROM THE DIRECTOR Happy Birthday to Us! We hope you are able to join Kantorei this season as we celebrate our 20th Anniversary. As one of the premier classical musical ensembles in Colorado, Kantorei has also distinguished itself as one of the top community choirs in America. We have been thrilled to perform around the country -- and in fact, the world -- with featured performances in numerous state, regional, and national choral conventions. We will celebrate our first 20 years of accomplishments all season long. We are so excited to invite founding conductor and now Artistic Director and Conductor Emeritus, Richard Larson, to conduct portions of each concert this season. Kantorei simply wouldn t be the choir it is today without his extraordinary leadership, and we are honored to have him join us again regularly this season. In October, we celebrate the many composers Kantorei has championed over the years, with a concert featuring many of the stunning works we have commissioned in our 20 years. For our holiday concerts, we celebrate you-- our wonderful fans and supporters-- by giving you the opportunity to help program the concert with the holiday music you want to hear! Be sure to send us your requests for music via email or at www.kantorei.org. In March, we celebrate music as an art form with Serenade to Music, featuring the wonderful Stratus Chamber Orchestra, in a performance of Vaughan Williams work of the same name. And in May, we celebrate our 20-year history with a fun program of hymns, spirituals, and a little best-of. We are thrilled to feature special guest artist Mark Hayes in that concert, and we invite all Kantorei alumni to join us on stage for a special encore performance. You won t want to miss it! This year will also see the release of our first professional recording, featuring the works of 2015-2016 Composer-in-Residence Kim André Arnesen. It is an exciting season for us, and we look forward to celebrating with you all throughout the season. Please take a few moments to read through our brochure, put our concert dates on your calendar, and join us for our year-long birthday party! A FEW WORDS FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends, Family, Supporters, and Fans of Kantorei: 20. YEARS. I can hardly believe it. I joined this wonderful ensemble in the Fall of 2004, a bright-eyed 23-year-old just out of college and looking for a choir to join to keep my love of choral music alive after school. 12 years later, I find myself a veteran of the ensemble, having had the opportunity to be part of the extraordinary successes of over half of the choir s existence. I often think about how much this ensemble has changed me, made me a better musician, given me life-long friends, made me a better leader, positively impacted my life. I think of those things and I smile, knowing I m just one story out of hundreds and hundreds of stories, all changed for the better because a group of six friends decided they wanted to keep singing after college. How fortunate we are that Alex, Melissa, John, Garth, Alicia, and Julie took those first steps all those years ago, and how fortunate that they reconnected with Dick Larson to start what we now know and love as Kantorei. Knowing the impact Kantorei has had on me, and on so many others, my role as Board President is to help ensure our organization s continued upward trajectory, bringing choral excellence to our community for 20 more years (and 20 more after that ). 2015-2016 was another banner year for Kantorei-- our operating budget grew by some 45% over the year prior, and thanks to your overwhelming generosity we nearly tripled-- tripled!-- our individual contributions over 2014. You, our supporters, made it clear that the choral arts are here to stay in the Denver community. I m excited to report that our Board of Directors is up to all kinds of exciting things-- 10-year visions, strategic goals, and strategic action plans, all built on the foundation of our mission and values. We know that a 21st-century arts organization that expects to thrive for 20 more years requires a very strong organizational foundation, and we are actively solidifying it. As we do, we hope you continue to invite your friends and family to become part of the Kantorei community. Help us grow. Bring them to a performance, and share with them the experience that we know will elevate them just as much as it elevates you. 20 years. We couldn t have done it without you, and we look forward to celebrating with you all season long! JOEL M. MEMORIES A FEW WORDS FROM THE DIRECTOR EMERITUS In 1997 there was a need for a group like Kantorei. A handful of singers informed me they missed the joy of singing they had experienced in their high school, college, and professional choral ensembles throughout the US. The October winds were starting to blow when I suggested that if we were going to start a new ensemble, we needed to start now! Christmas was a good time to introduce ourselves to the choral music lovers of Denver. After much dialogue about a name for our group (some really funny names were suggested!), we agreed on Kantorei, just soon enough to put the name on the front page of our first holiday concert program. We started with 13 singers that December, and after our first official auditions soon after, we had 21 wonderful voices. Thus the beginning. In the early years many incredible things happened. We became a formal non-profit, and we established ourselves in the community by singing for church services, weddings, and other events. We sang at regional and national conferences. We commissioned several composers throughout the years to write original compositions for us-- personally, I enjoyed creative programming (most of which was accepted by the group ). But most importantly, we established our true north musical excellence, creative programming, artistic quality. Attaining musical superiority was never a choice. It was, and still is, an expectation. It is something each and every singer has to accept as a shared goal if they wish to be part of Kantorei. To be part of the ensemble, one has to accept Kantorei as a priority in one s life. In retrospect, I was continuously intrigued as to the various walks of life these wonderful musicians come from. Most have occupations outside of the arts. And yet, it s important to Kantorei members to continue making music as an avocation, and to do so at a high level. After 20 years, Kantorei continues to press on as an esteemed professional-caliber choral ensemble. Thank you for joining us for this very special 20th Anniversary season. Kantorei s first 20 years have been memorable; be sure to join us for the next 20! RICHARD LARSON Artistic Director/Conductor 1997-2013 Artistic Director and Conductor Emeritus OUR FOUNDING MEMBERS: 20 YEARS LATER... Even though 20 years have passed by, the passion for this choir has not aged a single day. If I ve learned anything from my involvement with Kantorei since helping start this choir, it s the timelessness of what we do. The thriving art of choral music has the power to create love, foster peace, and make even the youngest friendships seem old. JOHN LUDWIG Founding Member Past President, Board of Directors When we started Kantorei 20 years ago, we would sit around and dream about all of the cool things we might be able to do. It seemed like we were dreaming so big at the time. And now, 20 years later, we ve rocketed past so many of the things that we talked about. This experience has renewed my belief that dreaming big is not only important but vital in life. You never know what dreams might come true. ALICIA RIGSBY Founding Member Accompanist If anyone had told me 20 years ago, as a handful of us began to rehearse in one of our living rooms, where that yet-to-be-named group would be in 20 years and what we would have accomplished in that time, I would have laughed them off as a dreamer. But yet here we are, European travelers, music commissioners, recording artists, opera troupe members, 80 s rock backup singers, and stage performers at both Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. Not only do I thank the phenomenal group of passionate singers and directors that have made up Kantorei over the past 20 years, I thank our audience and supporters and families and spouses that have allowed the whirlwind of accomplishments to happen these past 2 decades. Thank you for listening to us. GARTH CRISWELL Founding Member 6 KANTOREI 2016-2017 CONCERT SEASON BROCHURE KANTOREI 2016-2017 CONCERT SEASON BROCHURE 7
