The castle at Tintagel The little village of Tintagel is on the north coast of Cornwall, in southwest England. Its castle is one of the most famous castles in Britain. People say that it was the home of King Arthur in the fifth century and that the ghost of his helper, Merlin the Wizard, visits the cave under the castle. From London, you can get to Cornwall by train or by coach. I went by coach. It takes quite a long time but it s much cheaper than the train. Hyde Park Hyde Park covers 10 hectares and is London s biggest park. It s a popular place for riding and running. People play rugby, football and Frisbee there too. You can go on a boat on the Serpentine, or go swimming at the Lido, or you can just sit in a deckchair and chat to your friends. I particularly Speakers Corner like Speakers Corner where people stand up and talk about all sorts of different subjects. The Long Water I usually get the bus when I go to Hyde Park. If you live in the city centre, you can get a travel card, The Serpentine or you can buy tickets at a newsagent s, or you can get them from the machine at the bus stop. Brighton Brighton is a fantastic place to go for the weekend. It s on the south coast, not far from London. I love looking round the shops and there are a lot of good cafés and restaurants. If you like old buildings, you can visit the beautiful Royal Pavilion. I like walking along the sea front and going on Brighton pier. It s easy to get to Brighton from London. You can get the train from Victoria Station or London Bridge Station. It only takes an hour. Module 2 Review 7 The Ring Serpentine Road Park

2 Unit STEP 1 Grammar: Suggestions Vocabulary: Places Expressions: Responding to suggestions Communicative tasks: Asking for, making and responding to suggestions Talking about a day out 1 Key vocabulary Places BACKGROUND The Olympic Stadium in Athens was built for the 200 Olympic Games. It was designed by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, and it has a remarkable steel and glass roof. The Tate Modern, London s largest gallery of modern art, was opened in 2000. It is by the Thames, opposite St Paul s Cathedral, and occupies a building that was once a power station. The Ginkakuji (or Silver Pavilion) is a Zen temple at the foot of the Higashiyama (Eastern Mountains) in Kyoto. Windsor Castle is one of the residences of the Queen. The castle was begun by William the Conqueror after his invasion of England in 1066. The Blue Mosque in Istanbul was completed in 1616 in the days of the Ottoman Empire. With its six minarets and beautiful domes, it is one of the most famous buildings in Turkey. Disneyworld was built by Walt Disney, the creator of Mickey Mouse and many animated film classics. Now called Walt Disney World, the theme park is in Orlando, Florida. It opened in 1971. Selfridges is a large department store in Oxford Street, the busiest shopping street in central London. It has been open since the early 20th century. Read out the words in the box and then set the time limit for the matching task. Ensure students realise that the numbers of the descriptions relate to the numbers of the photos. Some of the words should be familiar. For new words, ask students to guess the meaning and to use a dictionary to check if they have time. Play the recording. Students listen and check their answers. Point out to students that the places have a capital initial if they are part of a proper name, for example, a castle, but Windsor Castle. Ask them to name the country for each of the places in the photos. 2 Play the recording again and ask students to repeat. Tapescript/ 1 The Olympic Stadium in Athens 2 The Tate Modern, an art gallery in London 3 The Ginkakuji Temple in Kyoto Windsor Castle, near London 5 The Blue Mosque in Istanbul 6 Disneyworld in Florida, the world s first theme park 7 Selfridges, a department store in Oxford Street, London Presentation Shall we go out? BACKGROUND The London Eye is a huge wheel beside the River Thames with a spectacular view over the city. It was built to celebrate the new millennium. The wheel moves very slowly and the ride lasts 30 minutes. a Ask students to say what they can see in the main photo. Make sure they recognise that the city is London. Use the photo to revise or introduce key words in the conversation (for example, London Eye, Thames, boat trip). In the second photo ask students to identify Jay and Ana. Introduce the two new characters, Martin and Lizzie. b Read out the introduction to the conversation and ask the question. Play the recording. Students listen and read. Ask them which places in the conversation appear in the photos, and to identify them. Answer Because everyone wants to do something different. c Play the recording again, pausing to help with new vocabulary (for example, somewhere, look round the shops, exhibition, suggestions). Students look at the conversation and find the answers to the questions. Point out that there are several different ways of making suggestions. Drill some sentences containing the target language, for example: Shall we go out? What shall we do? Why don t we go on the London Eye? How about taking a boat trip? Let s take a boat trip. 1 visit Windsor Castle, go shopping in Oxford Street, go on the London Eye, take a boat trip on the Thames, go to the Tate Modern 2 Shall we go out somewhere tomorrow? How about visiting Windsor Castle? Shall we go to Oxford Street? Why don t we go on the London Eye? How about taking a boat trip? Let s take a boat trip. Why don t we go to that? (the new exhibition at the Tate Modern) d Make sure that students are clear about the meaning of suggest and suggestion. Practise the pronunciation: /sə dʒest/, /sə dʒestʃn/. Students read the sentences and look back at the text to decide if they re true or false. 1 True. 2 False. She agrees with his suggestion. 3 False. She wants to go shopping in Oxford Street. True. 5 False. He doesn t want to go on the London Eye. 6 False. Martin suggests a trip on the Thames. 7 True. 8 True. 9 False. She suggests going to the Tate Modern. 3 OPTION You can ask students to practise the conversation in groups of four. Invite one or two groups to perform their conversation for the class. Key grammar Suggestions Students complete the examples. Emphasise the use of the -ing verb form with How about? Explain that the full form of Let s is Let us. shall don t take about Practice a Students match the sentence parts and say/write the sentences. For questions 2,, 5, 7 and 8, you could ask students to express the same suggestion in a different way, for example, Let s go to the Tate Modern. Why don t we buy a map? How about asking a policeman? b 5 6 a b 1 g Shall we go on the bus or on the tube? 2 h How about going to the Tate Modern? 3 a What time shall we meet? Is 7.30 all right? f Let s buy a map. 5 b Why don t we ask a policeman? 6 c Where shall we have our lunch? 7 d Let s buy some postcards. 8 e Shall we sit down? Students write their own sentence with the words in the wrong order. Pairs exchange sentences and put the words in the right order. Note that there is further work on comprehension and practice of making suggestions in the Module 2 Review at the end of Unit. Pattern drill: TRP page 12 (Unit, Step 1) Try this! : museum, theatre, cathedral, cinema, palace, aquarium Key expressions Responding to suggestions Read through the responses and ask students to repeat. Students match the responses with the meanings. Elicit the full form of I d (I would). Point out that, although we say I want/i d like to do something, I d rather is used without to. 1 a 2 d 3 c b 5 a 6 a 7 a Key pronunciation /k/ /p/ /t/ Students focus on the sound at the end of each word. Play the first part of the recording while students listen and read the words. Point out that all three sounds are unvoiced that is, there is no movement of the vocal cords. Ask students to place their fingers on each side of their throat and to say the sounds. There should be no vibration in their throat. Contrast this with the voiced sounds /ɡ/, /b/ and /d/ where the vocal cords vibrate. Play the recording again and ask students to repeat. Play the recording. Students repeat the words and identify the sounds.
