Term Definition Example
A short poem that expresses a speaker s thoughts or emotions.

A longer poem that tells a story.
A poem in which 1 or more characters speak, rather than the poet himself.

A group of lines in a poem, similar to a paragraph.

A comparison between 2 things using the words like or as.
My love is like a red, red rose.
A comparison of 2 things without the words like or as.
His eyes were daggers that cut right through me.
Giving non-human things human characteristics.
The trees danced in the wind.
A great exaggeration to emphasize strong feeling.
I will love you until all the seas go dry.
Details that appeal to the five senses. Five senses:
Cold, wet leaves floating on mosscolored water.
Something that stands for something else (usually an idea).
Is the American flag just a flag?
The repetition of consonant sounds at the beginnings of words.
Swiftly, swiftly flew the ship
The repetition of consonant sounds at the ends of words.
Wherever we go Silence will fall like dews
The repetition of similar vowel sounds.
...that hoard, and sleep, and feed, and know not me.
Words whose sounds suggest the sounds made by objects or activities.

Poetry Book Instructions 1. You will have 8 pages in your book. Each page will have an example of 1 poetry element in this order: Page 1: simile Page 2: metaphor Page 3: personification Page 4: alliteration Page 5: consonance Page 6: assonance Page 7: onomatopoeia Page 8: song lyric, w/poetic element labeled
2. The song lyric must contain at least 1 of the peoetic elements listed above. It is a song of your choice, but it must be appropriate. 3. You must find these examples in poems that we have NOT read in class. You can find them in the textbook or in other poetry books in class (only). You may NOT use the internet. But, you may use other books in the library.
4. Every page must have the name of the poem, the author & the poetic element. 5. Every page must be colored and illustrated. 6. You must use examples from at least 3 poems & 1 song lyric 7. Write your name on the BACK page.
