Instructional Related Activities Report Form SPONSOR DEPARTMENT Steven Marsh Performing Arts - Music ACTIVITY TITLE World Music Concert/Demonstration Series Interactive Percussion Workshop with Ed Roscetti (Accounting string: TK910-821- 90557) DATE (S) OF ACTIVITY October 28, 2014 PLEASE EXPLAIN (1) DESCRIPTION OF ACTIVITY: NOTED DRUMMER/PERCUSSIONIST/EDUCATOR/AUTHOR ED ROSCETTI AND HIS ASSISTANT BROUGHT A VARIETY OF ETHNIC DRUMS AND PERCUSSSION INSTRUMENTS TO OUR WORLD MUSIC CLASS. MR. ROSCETTI EXPLAINED AND DEMONSTRATED SOME INTERESTING RHYTHMS FROM AROUND THE WORLD. THEN ALL OF OUR STUDENTS WERE INVITED ONSTAGE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE PLAYING OF DRUMS AND PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS. AS THE PHOTOS BELOW WILL SHOW, A GOOD TIME WAS HAD BY ALL, AND OUR STUDENTS LEARNED MORE ABOUT THE NATURE OF HOW MULTI- LAYERED RHYTHMS WORK. (2) HOW DID THE ACTIVITY RELATE TO A COURSE(S): SINCE OUR WORLD MUSIC COURSE (PAMU 332) SPENDS A LOT OF TIME INVESTIGATING THE DIFFERENT MUSIC AND RHYTHMS THAT ARE FOUND AROUND THE WORLD, THIS HANDS- ON PERCUSSION WORKSHOP CORRELATED DIRECTLY WITH OUR STUDY OF MULTI- LAYERED AFRICAN RHYTHMS AND LATIN- AMERICAN MUSICAL RHYTHMS. WHENEVER WE CAN GIVE OUR STUDENTS OPPORTUNITIES TO DIRECTLY PARTICIPATE IN THE MAKING OF MUSIC, IT GIVES THEM A VALUABLE FIRSTHAND EXPERIENCE OF CREATING RHYTHMS, AND THEY TAKE AWAY A NEW APPRECIATION FOR HOW MUSIC IS CONSTRUCTED AND PERFORMED. AND (3) WHAT YOU LEARNED FROM THE PROCESS: I SAW THAT OUR STUDENTS ENJOYED THIS INTERACTIVE MUSIC EXPERIENCE QUITE A BIT. IF I TEACH THIS COURSE AGAIN IN THE FUTURE, I WOULD LIKE TO REPEAT THIS EXPERIENCE FOR THE STUDENTS. I WOULD ENCOURAGE MR. ROSCETTI TO HAVE THE STUDENTS TRADE OFF BETWEEEN THE DIFFERENT INSTRUMENTS MORE OFTEN, SO THAT THE STUDENTS GET AN EVEN WIDER EXPOSURE TO THE DIFFERENT PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS. 5. What do you consider the positives/ strengths of this activity? That it was hands on, the instructor really understood his stuff, it involved the whole class! It gave me a better grasp on how to interact was music! The concert was participative and helped demonstrate different percussion theories. Fun The strengths of this activity was the involvement we participated in, and it always helps to bring in another teacher who is more centered around the percussion-esque study of music. going up on stage and using the instruments ourselves. The performers did a tremendous job explaining the music. Actually using some of the instruments ourselves. Being able to play instruments as a group. Active class participation. Very interactive! Teaching us to use percussion instruments was helpful in understanding how membranophones and other percussive instruments are used in music. It was very interactive and the whole class got to participate. It was interactive I finally understood the purpose of drums in a lot of world music, I actually got the sensation of joy from playing the drums that i had never felt before. It was amazing and should always be a mandatory thing to be able to play music in this class. Lots of fun, included everyone, enriching musically and culturally. Everyone got to participate Hands-on Total Responses 16

6. What were the weaknesses of this activity? N/A Small classroom. Not enough room for students and others that decided to enjoy the free concert. was a little long and too repetative We all did not get a shaker. (A joke.) None. Too short, could use longer class sessions for each instrument. Sometimes the instructor covered concepts quickly and making more advanced concepts difficult to follow for non music majors. Was not enough time. The guest instructor used a lot of "music speak" which was difficult to understand if you have never learned to read, write, or play music. Not many people would have been able to hear about this if it weren't for this class. Understanding the musical nomenclature We don't do activities like this more often. That we don't have an entire course dedicated to it. Everyone got to participate Total Responses 14

7. Suggestions or comments for future activities? This was an amazing activity that should be repeated. Use of much larger classroom for future concerts. none More performances like this to bring exposure and live music and a better understanding into the classroom. Keep doing these performances Begin with more basic information so everyone can follow More time. He needs to come back and perform! More in class music playing workshops. Music can only truly be experienced by playing it yourself. Not from a textbook. Great event! Male an entire course dedicated to percussion :) Definitely needs to be more of Ed in the classroom Total Responses 11

8. Any other comments? none I had a blast working on the percussion styles and learning from Ed and his assistant, it really fortified my understandings around the concept I so desperately wanted to know. Great activity. I learned a lot about percussion and really enjoyed it! No comment. n/a Ed Roscetti was amazing, nice and friensly and super helpful. Can we bring him back before the semester is out? 9. Which course(s) that you are currently taking did this activity relate to? World Music PAMU 332 - World Music World Music PAMU 332, PAMU 310 World Music class. World Music World Music-01 PAMU 332 World Music World Music PAMU 332 PAMU 332 World Music PAMU 332 PAMU 332 PAMU 332 World Music Pamu 332 World Music PAMU 332 Total Responses 17

10. How did this activity relate to the content and/or learning outcomes of the courses that you are taking? We learned about Afro-cubanized percussion music and how to actually play it! Exposed the class to different forms of percussion from various cultures. We learned about a lot of these instruments so it was interesting to be able to actually play them. It demonstrated the variety of rhythms that world music offers and how these rhythms relate to modern american music. It really simplified and incorporated everything Professor Marsh spoke of. In relation to time signatures, beats, off beat, etc. They taught us about percussion instruments. Very relate able. We often learn about the beat of different types of music, so this example gave personal experience with how these are created. Great lesson on rhythm of the percussion instruments. Percussion instruments, beats. Percussion is an important part of most if not all music. Opportunity to learn about instruments blended with the Western style and other culture styles. I helps me understand the concepts we learn about in my World Music class. It related tremendously because It let us get hands on experience in actually playing music. Drums are an important feature in a lot of world music and we got to do it ourselves. After studying percussive rhythms and practices from all over the world it was very enriching to be able to actually practice some of it. We are learning about music that relies heavily on back beats and percussion How rhythm and texture works in percussion instruments Total Responses 17
