June 2017 Volume 42, Number 6 IT S CLAIRE McKENNA AND FRIENDS, AS OUR CONCERT SEASON ENDS! by George Swinford Claire McKenna And Friends last entertained us in February of 2016. On June 18th Claire will lead a similar group of friends, to close out our spring concert series. Claire has a long history with PSTJS. As a youngster growing up in Edmonds, she often accompanied her parents to our sessions at the Mountaineers. Our society sponsored her attendance at Camp Heebie Jeebies and at the Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society s camp, where she polished her clarinet and vocal jazz skills. Later, as she studied at Western Washington U, she and trumpet star Bria Skonberg coled the all-woman trad combo, Mighty Aphrodite. That group played for our society several times. As well, they appeared at several festivals and a couple of jazz cruises. At present, Claire lives in Edmond, OK with her husband Ryan Piersol, their small son Mason, and Murphy, the family s golden retriever. As I write this, she is finishing her third year of teaching English at Piedmont High School, in Piedmont OK. It s her sixth year of teaching, overall. On the 18th Claire and her clarinet will lead six of her musical friends. Dave Holo on trumpet and Dave Loomis on trombone will complete the front line. Shannon Thue Pigott, Claire s bandmate from Mighty Aphrodite, will play piano. Dave Brown will be the bass player and Mike Daugherty will handle the percussion. A sixth friend will complete the rhythm section on guitar, but that person is yet to be named. We seldom feature a band with the vocal potential of this septet. Claire has listed herself, Shannon and Mike Daugherty as vocalists. Each of the three Daves can sing convincingly, as well. There should be no shortage of lyrics on the 18th. Claire has already proven herself to be a capable leader, as well as a fine jazz instrumentalist and singer. Her roster for next month demonstrates her good taste in musical companions. Join us on the 18th to listen and dance to the music of Claire McKenna And Friends. Remember, we won t be meeting in July or August. Catch a festival or two, and have a good summer. We ll see you in September. WHERE: Ballard Elks Lodge 6411 Seaview Ave. NW, Seattle WHEN: 1 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. June 18 ADMISSION: $12 PSTJS members $15 non-members. Pay only at door. FURTHER INFO: Carol Rippey 425-776-5072. Or - website: www.pstjs.org. Plenty of free parking; great view & dance floor, snacks, coffee, and other beverages available. Notes from the Prez Later this month is the fabulous 27th Annual Jazz Festival held again on the campus of St Martin s University in Lacey, WA. And as in past years we will be auctioning one ALL EVENT BADGE at our June Sunday Jazz. The published price is $100, not including the Thursday evening ticket price. Charlotte Dickison has been so faithful in sending us badges these many years and whatever monies gained from the auction will be added to our youth scholarship fund. So please be prepared with CASH or CHECKBOOK to join in the bidding - sorry no credit cards. After 27 years we never know how many more fests we ll be able to enjoy so make plans to be there, I will for sure. Here s hoping each of you will enjoy your summer, and be ready for our September jazz fix featuring Dave Loomis new band. Let s make the 2017/2018 season a great one with many new members so bring your family, friends or neighbors to share the music and friendship PSTJS offers to everyone. Cheers, Judy

In the early morning of April 18 that year, the devastating temblor along the San Andreas Fault hit San Francisco and many lesser cities, followed by equally destructive fires. Aside from a fairly well-known tune from the Lu Watters- Turk Murphy book ( San Andreas Fault ) it s a stretch to make a connection between the year 1906 and the following bit of trivia. Still, I found it interesting that an unusually large number of famous or at least semi-famous jazz musicians were born in that 12-month span. A vintage year? Perhaps. Consider this list: Clarinetists Joe Darensbourg (who had a productive period in Seattle), Barney Bigard (of Ellington fame), Frank Teschmacher (of the Chicago Austin High Gang ), and the inimitable Peewee Russell. Pianist Joe Sullivan, the Chicagoan who, interestingly enough, was born as O Sullivan. Trumpeters (or cornetists) Muggsy Spanier (another of the early products of Chicago), and the lesser-known but excellent Bobby Stark, Frankie Newton, Sterling Bose and Jack Purvis. Trombonists Vic Dickinson, J.C. Higginbotham and Sandy Williams. Sax players Bud Freeman (still another of the 1920s Chicago innovators), Gil Rodin who also managed the great Bob Crosby band of the late 30s, and the swinging altoist, Pete Brown. Drummer Ray Bauduc, another heralded Crosby star. Not a bad lineup. I m sure there must have been a 1906-born string bass or tuba player who would have filled out this great group, but my research failed to turn up one of all-star stature. Also, Dick McDonough would have been a nice addition on guitar/banjo, but alas, he was born two years too soon and the ubiquitous Eddie Condon was a 1905 baby. All this is hardly of earthquake importance, but it s nice to recall these names and think of the wonderful music they made.
