THE COUNTRY S PREMIERE PROJECTION ARTS FESTIVAL
LUMA is a cutting edge visual arts festival held annually in Upstate New York that celebrates the intersection of art and technology. PROJECTION MAPPING Using high-powered video projection and advanced 3D animation, we transform the surfaces that surround us into canvases for truly unique narratives. What stories can only be told by altering the very architecture we take for granted in daily life? While some only see projection mapping as spectacle, we see it as a whole new art form. LUMA s mission is to advance this emerging practice by giving artists a space to push the boundaries of their own work in front of an enthusiastic and open-minded audience. Each year, the festival collaborates with a different team of artists, selects a unique group of structures, and invites our audience to experience entirely new visions brought to life. WHO WE ARE Events like LUMA are a key component of the economic mix rebuilding upstate New York. LUMA is a shining example, highlighting the synergy of a vital arts community, local leadership and passionate community partners leading the charge in downtown redevelopment. CHUCK SCHUMER, US Senator It s because of events like LUMA collegeaged folks from around the state will flock to Binghamton. It s also great way for students and other community members to celebrate together. NICHOLAS FERRARA, Binghamton U Class of 17, SA President LUMA was founded in 2015 by a street photographer, a film editor and an event planner. They expected a crowd of 3,000. But 30,000 came. Today, from artists to engineers to city workers and designers, LUMA represents the work of hundreds. Support comes from City of Binghamton, Broome County and the State of New York. Sponsorships come from businesses large and small. A dedicated network of individuals contribute as well, with donations starting at five dollars. We strive to make each new year of LUMA unique. The festival has already seen symphony orchestras, internationally syndicated cartoonists, artificial intelligence and characters controlled by real time motion capture. We can t wait to show you what s next.
