ACTIVITIES TO DO WITH YOUR TEACHER The Children Came Back This song is based on an Archie Roach song that was released in 1990. The chorus uses the melody from Archie s song. The Briggs/Gurrumul/Everettsmith name checks quite a list of aboriginal heroes. Look at the pictures on the previous page. Your job is to write down who these people are and then why you think Briggs put them in his song. If you don t know who the picture is, put the names from the song into Google and do a search for images, then you can match them! 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 ACELA1485 Writing/reading ACELY1736 Creating Texts

ACTIVITIES TO DO ON YOUR OWN OR WITH YOUR TEACHER The Children Came Back The song also lists some local heroes for Briggs. Cummera - short for Cummeragunga, a place many Yorta Yorta people lived by the Murray River. Rumba is the short name for Rumbalara football club, an indigenous club from Shepparton (VIC) in the Murray Valley Football League. He name checks famous aboriginal people who have had national recognition, but he also calls out local people (his family) who have also done great things, though no- one even knows. This song shows us it is important to recognize people in our community who are legends in one way or another. People who work hard to help make other people s lives better, or show by example a good way to live. Can you make a list of Local Heroes from your Community? Who are they, and what do they do that makes them inspirational? Can you make a rhyme about them? Go for it, have some fun! ACELA1485 Writing/reading ACELY1736 Creating Texts

ACTIVITIES TO DO ON YOUR OWN OR WITH YOUR TEACHER NIMAs Protest Songs! A protest song is a song that is about the need for some kind of movement for social or political change, or to bring attention to an injustice or need! As Gingiri from the Rulku Band of Milingimbi once said; Everyone has the right to sing in protest about the things they don t agree with! Check out a Rulku song here www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxhjoctcyya The original Took the Children Away by Archie Roach was about the stolen generation. It is a very powerful but sad song. www.youtube.com/watch?v=aywdt6yhmmo The version by Briggs builds on that and celebrates aboriginal heroes and gives hope! "The great thing is I was actually thinking 'well, maybe there's more to this song'," Roach says. "Is there a follow-up? I'm a stolen kid and I made good." www.smh.com.au/national/an- old- song- that- brings- hope- to- a- new- generation- 20150703- gi4mdd.html John Lennon, one of the songwriters for the Beatles, said that when you write a song, you just Say what you mean, make it rhyme, and put a back beat behind it https://books.google.com.au/books?id=pjeacaaaqbaj&pg=pt164&lpg=pt164&dq#v What are some important things you think could have a protest song written about them? It could be something that affects your school, your community, the whole of your area or the NT, or Australia, or even the whole world! Make a list Pick the one Write some ideas Make them rhyme! NTCF - ESL RL3.1 Communication

ACTIVITIES TO DO YOUR WITH YOUR TEACHER Mathematics! Most of the NIMA awards went to NT artists this year. Stanley GAWURRA Gaykamangu won 4! Briggs, with Gurrumul and Dwayne Everittsmith, won Song of the Year and he comes from Shepparton. Kutcha Edwards was inducted into the Hall of Fame and he is from Balranald in NSW. Scale This shows that every 400mm or 4 cm is roughly equal to 600 kilometers How far are these places away from Darwin? Use a ruler and a calculator 1 Find Balranald and Shepparton on the map. 2 Use a ruler to measure the number of millimeters from Balranald and Shepparton to Darwin 3 Write these figures B to D = mm (call this B) S to D = mm (call this S) 4 We know that 400mm = 600kilometers (almost) so we have to find out how many lots of 400mm are in our answers. To do this we divide the total by 400. 5 B/400 = mm (call this Bmm) S/400 = mm (call this Smm) 6 This gives the answers of How many lots of 600k, so, to get the answer in kilometers mulitply Bmm X 600 = Km Smm X 600 = Km 7 Distance from Balranald to Darwin = Km Distance from Shepparton to Darwin = Km Remember, this is not the distance by road, it is a straight line and is called as the crow flies. Also, 400 mm doesn t exactly equal 600km so it is not accurate but a good estimate! ACMMG137 Using units of measurement ACMNA123 Number and place value
