The Quarterly Journal of Microscopical Science FOUNDED 1853 December 1963 VOL. IO4 PART 4 (THIRD SERIES, NO. 68) Joint Editors JOHN R. BAKER, D.Sc, F.R.S. H. G. CALLAN, D.Sc., F.R.S. Published for the Company of Biologists Limited OXFORD: AT THE CLARENDON PRESS Price 305. net Subscription for Volume 4. 45.

Notice to contributors Study of this notice may accelerate publication by three months. Papers offered to The Quarterly Journal of Microscopical Science should be sent either to Prof. H. G. Callan, Dept. of Natural History, The University, St. Andrews, Fife, or to Dr. J. R. Baker, Dept. of Zoology, University Museum, Oxford. The journal exists for the publication of new material. If any preliminary communication on the subject of a paper offered to the editors has been sent to another journal, a note to this effect must accompany the manuscript. Manuscripts must be in widely spaced typescript throughout (not more than 13 lines in 10 cm). It is particularly important that summaries, lists of references, legends to figures, and tables should be widely spaced. Manuscripts must be fully corrected by the author. A charge will be made for excessive correction in proof. Capital letters should be used sparingly. They must not be used in titles or subtitles, except where absolutely necessary. The names of proprietary products of all kinds must be written with lower-case initial letters (e.g. araldite). All manuscripts must be accompanied by a Summary, in no case exceeding 500 words. The summary must not repeat the information contained in the title. It must be a brief statement of the chief results obtained, not a mere list of subjects discussed. It must be placed at the beginning of the paper, after the author's name and postal address. There must not be a separate section of the paper entitled 'Conclusions'. The main conclusions should be given in the summary. Papers should be as concise as possible. Extensive introductory matter and long discussions should not be included in the manuscript. Division of the matter by subtitles must follow a consistent plan. Excessive subdivision should be avoided. Not more than three grades of sub-titles will be printed. As a general rule, microscopical measurements should be expressed in y. or m^. Authors are asked to write in simple, grammatical English. Technical terms must necessarily appear in a scientific paper, but 'scientific' jargon should be avoided. Latin tags such as Vide supra should not be used. Special care should be taken to avoid the piling up of complex adjectival phrases in front of the nouns they qualify. Carefully chosen prepositions should be used freely, to show clearly the logical interrelations of the nouns. There is no objection to a moderate use of the first person singular. In tables, the sign 'o' should be used to mean 'no reaction', and a dash ( ) to indicate that no observation was made. Footnotes must not be used, except in tables and appendices. Acknowledgements must be placed at the end of the paper, before the references. References must be given in alphabetical order of authors' surnames. The names of journals should be abbreviated in accordance with The world list of scientific publications. The following examples may be useful: Amer. J. Anat.; Anat. Rec.; Arch. exp. Zellforsch.; Biol. Bull, Wood's Hole; Biol. Rev.; Cellule; Chromosoma; C.R. Soc. Biol. Paris; Exp. Cell Res.; Int. Rev. Cytol.; J. cell. comp. Physiol.; J. exp. Biol.; J. exp. Zool.; J. Histochem. Cytochem.; J. Morph.; J. R. micr. Soc; Nature, Lond.; Proc. roy. Soc. B; Protoplasma; Quart. J. micr. Sci.; Quart. Rev. Biol.; Science; Stain Tech.; Z. wiss. Mikr.; Z. Zellforsch. These abbreviations should be used for journals not mentioned in The world list: Arch. d'anat. micr.; Biochim. biophys. Acta; Bull. Micr. appl.; J. biophys. biochem. Cytol.; J. Cell Biol.; J. Ult.
