Postmarked 14 November 1949 from Stanford providing a blurb for the American edition of Elio Vittorini's In Sicily (which was not used on the first American edition) and mentioning Ernest Hemingway, who wrote an introduction for the book. Fine. Good content, in full: "Dear Mr. McDowell Thanks you the Vittorini and Bowles. The latter I haven't yet read, but the Vittorini is like a good brick fireplace. It draws and it sheds warmth and thank God it has a few ashes in it. The Hemingway introduction is a great man talking foolishly out of his prejudices. Wallace Stegner." The Bowles book in question was The Sheltering Sky. McDowell had a long and distinguished career in American publishing, working at New Directions, Random House, and Crown. For a short period in the late 1950s he and Ivan Obolensky published under their own imprint, most famously issuing the Pulitzer Prizewinning posthumous novel by his good friend James Agee, A Death in the Family. #282245... $450
