Degrees of Comparison Degrees of Comparison are used when we compare one person or one thing with another. When adjectives or adverbs are used in comparisons, they take different forms. The form an adjective or adverb takes depends on how things are being compared. The different forms of comparison are called Degrees of Comparison. Comparison can be made using the three forms of the adjective.

Degrees of Comparison 1. Positive Degree 2. Comparative Degree 3. Superlative Degree

Positive Degree It is the base form of the adjective or adverb which simply denotes a property. It does not show comparison. Examples : Good Big Small

Comparative Degree It is the form of an adjective or adverb used to compare two things. Examples : Better than Bigger than Smaller than

Superlative Degree It shows property of an adjective or adverb. It is used to indicate the highest or lowest quality amongst many things. Examples : Best Biggest Smallest

Degrees of Comparison It is a tall building. Apple is sweet to taste. Radha is kind. This building is taller than that building. Apple is sweeter than Banana. Radha is kinder than Krishna. This is the tallest building. Apple is the sweetest fruit. Radha is the kindest of all.
