June 2018 Dear Desert Chapel Students, Over the summer break, it is tremendously beneficial that you continue to read. In preparation for the upcoming school year, students will have the assignment of reading two (2) books over the course of the summer. Instructions: The first book under each grade is Required Reading (marked by an asterisk*). Attached is a Reading Log on which to record your progress. You are required to write a brief summary for each chapter in the book (one form per chapter). Use complete sentences, clearly communicate how the plot unfolds in the chapter, and use descriptive language. You will submit your completed forms on the first day of school. It will constitute your first grade in Language Arts. You may choose one other book to read. Listed below are suggested selections. Do not pick one that you have read before. Read the book in its entirety. Be prepared in the first week of classes to be assigned a project or essay that assesses your understanding of your chosen novel. Again, this also will be an initial grade for Language Arts. Bring both books to school on the first day, along with signed parental permission form and your Required Reading Log and Chapter Summary forms. The chosen book you select is at you and your parents discretion; however, we expect that you will choose a book that reflects your reading level and that is appropriate for our school. Please select a novel that you have not already read. All novels read as part of a classroom curriculum are not acceptable. Middle school books should be at least 150 pages in length. High school books should be at least 250 pages in length. Plan wisely in order to finish both books in time. Enjoy your reading over the summer. We are looking forward to an excellent school year next year! In Him, Mrs. Michele Ingram Academic Coordinator
