2018 sees the West Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra celebrating it s 35th anniversary, a major milestone for our arts community and Australian Jazz. Perth s vibrant live jazz scene is a testament to the power of the WAYJO experience. Almost every jazz, swing, lounge and big band act performing in Perth today has current or past members of WAYJO. Local jazz giants Jamie Oehlers, Libby Hammer, Carl Mackey and the late Graham Wood all played their way through WAYJO and around Australia. Some of the WAYJO alumni now making waves overseas include Linda Oh, Troy Roberts, Daniel Susnjar, Graeme Blevins, Becc Sanderson and Mat Jodrell. So, here s to our emerald year! With your support, there will be many more years of fine jazz to come.

Artistic Director Welcome Our 2018 program will celebrate the 35th anniversary year of WAYJO and showcase the very best music from many genres, art forms and eras of jazz. To really celebrate this milestone we are proud to present King Street Corner Pocket, a four day fringe jazz festival featuring local musicians and alumni, showcasing the depth and breadth of jazz talent we have in this city. For the last four years, we have run a series of Young Women in Jazz workshops, designed to inspire confidence in female musicians as they begin their journeys to a life in music. In 2018, we are delighted to take another step forwards in promoting equality in jazz. Our Jazz at The Maj program, a sell-out hit in 2017, returns with an expanded program largely dedicated to Women in Jazz, highlighting amazing female instrumentalists, vocalists and composers from Australia and around the world on the first Friday and Saturday of the month throughout the year. Other highlights from this year s wonderfully varied program include the creation of a new theatre work with Helpmann Award winning actor and performer iota, welcoming Australian icon Kate Ceberano at the beautiful Astor Theatre, two regional tours, and the remounting of Duke Ellington s Nutcracker at the stunning Quarry Amphitheatre. As well as a full performance program continuing to honour the big band greats and showcasing some of Australia s finest emerging big band composers, WAYJO produces a series of workshops which nurture and encourage young school aged musicians in regional and metro areas, encourage young women to participate more in the music scene, and provide opportunities for young musicians to improve in their composition and improvisational skills. With this and so much more on offer, there s something for everyone to enjoy. Thank you for helping to support these talented and hard-working musicians. I look forward to seeing you at a concert soon! Dr Mace Francis

Message from the General Manager If 2017 was a bumper year for WAYJO, with sell out after sell out and box office records broken, then our 35th anniversary in 2018 will be a cracker. Our small team will curate over 100 events throughout the year, matching the output of companies with far greater human and financial resources than we could dream of. And yet, with the WAYJO spirit and a good deal of elbow grease from the team, there s not a lot we won t be able to achieve this year and in the future. It is an honour to serve our young musicians. The work they put in behind the scenes to deliver the amazing concerts we produce is nothing short of inspiring. Our 35th anniversary program is dedicated to all WAYJO members, past and present, for what they have offered to the company. We re very proud to spotlight some members of our family throughout this brochure and celebrate their successes. I would like to pay tribute to everyone who works so tirelessly to achieve our shared vision. Jess and Justine in the office who deliver day after day. Mace and his artistic team of Ricki, Marty and Alana for their influence and direction. The WAYJO Board for their vision and guidance. And to the many donors, sponsors, subscribers, ticket buyers, social media friends and followers, and general well-wishers. I love my job. And I couldn t do it without the support of all of the above, who deserve greater recognition. It s their work that will assuredly make 2018 WAYJO s biggest and best year yet. Simon Keen

Slap and Tickle - featuring iota A Summer Nights and The Kabuki Drop Co-Production What do you get when you bring Helpmann Award winning performers, one of Perth s finest theatrical minds, a world-leading jazz composer and arranger, and 12 young musicians together? A riotous and fast-paced performance destined to be the hit of Fringe World. Slap is a clown and Tickle is his gimp. When they take to the stage to perform their variety show at Fringe World, it is something they have done a thousand times before. Neither of them expects this will be their last show together. Backed by a 12-piece WAYJO orchestra, iota takes on the multiple roles of the cast of the Slap and Tickle Variety Show, all performed by his character Slap, while Tickle - the hard working, trouble-shooting gimp - rolls with the punches and dreams of a better life. Under the direction of Mel Cantwell (former Artistic Director, Perth Theatre Company) and musical direction of Mace Francis, Slap and Tickle will receive its world premiere in the Studio Underground at the State Theatre Centre of WA. Slap and Tickle is an hilariously adult and unexpectedly moving exploration of the variety format, enduring talent and the ties that bind. 27 Jan, 30 Jan to 3 Feb, 8.00pm Studio Underground - State Theatre Centre, Perth fringeworld.com.au Wednesday Night Orchestra 18+ Event Mature Content 9

14 WAYJO at Quarry Amphitheatre, 2014

Duke Ellington s Nutcracker Classical jazz Interpretation at its Finest As Spring turns to Summer, and we head towards Christmas, is there a better venue in Perth to visit and partake in some classic jazz than the Quarry Amphitheatre? We don t think so, which is why the Wednesday Night Orchestra return to perform a true masterpiece, Ellington s Nutcracker. American pianist, composer and bandleader Duke Ellington recorded his jazz interpretation of Tchaikovsky s The Nutcracker Suite for Columbia Records in 1960. These famous melodic themes are given the Ellington touch turning them into the likes of Sugar Rum Cherry and Dance of the Floreadores. A true family friendly event, WAYJO will play a host of other Ellington classics featuring the Monday and Tuesday Night Orchestras on subsequent nights to round out the 2018 program. WAYJO Spotlight on Julia Wallace WAYJO Debut 2017 How long have you been playing the trumpet? This is my 7th year of playing the trumpet. I picked it up when I was 10 at primary school and couldn t think of anything worse than to copy my siblings and play a string instrument. After finally being able to make out a sound after the first couple of group lessons, I quickly loved the trumpet. How has your first year in WAYJO been? This past year in WAYJO has been amazing. You d be surprised how good Mondays can be when you re playing jazz with your insanely talented friends, and the satisfaction of finally getting that tune that sounded rock bottom at first, to gig ready. Ricki is a ridiculously good trumpet player and band leader. It s such a cool environment to be surrounded by people who also love music. What s been your highlight of 2017? Playing a weekend of the Jazz at The Maj series with Adrian Kelly. If I could be back up there watching Adrian out the front playing Thad Jones A Child is Born on Flugel Horn, with us backing him up as a band, I would jump to it! Are you looking at further music study? Do you hope to have a career in music? I would love to go to WAAPA. After I finish school next year, I ll audition for the Jazz and contemporary courses. A career in songwriting and performing being a multi-instrumentalist would be the absolute dream. What sort of opportunities is WAYJO opening up for you? Working with professional musicians, making connections to other young musicians and getting to know the Perth Jazz scene. I know all of us have improved our performance skills this year and WAYJO s allowed us to meet new muso mates, perform at awesome venues and play some great music. 16

What are you most looking forward to in 2018? There s going to be many more WAYJO Jazz at The Maj shows throughout the whole year. That s so exciting, it s such a good venue. Next year s celebration of Women in Jazz will be so great to perform in. I look forward to meeting female musicians and making a career in jazz. 17

WAYJO Spotlight on Alana Macpherson Assistant Music Director How long have you been playing saxophone and been part of WAYJO? I ve been playing for nearly 15 years now! I started around the time of my 11th birthday and been a member of WAYJO since 2010. I ve played lead alto in the Wednesday Night Orchestra for the past 4 years. What have been the highlights of your years at WAYJO? Definitely having the opportunity to work with world-class composers every year in WNO. We ve had Darcy James Argue, Ed Partyka, Ed Neumeister and Mike Abene in my time who are all the biggest names in modern big band music around the world today. Working with Australian composers and premiering new works on a regular basis with the Composer in Residence program are incredible opportunities. Having a composer who has written a piece for your ensemble, standing in front of you, and directing you is a truly unique experience as a player. What are you looking forward to achieving and learning as WAYJO s Assistant Music Director? I m most looking forward to learning as much as I can from Ricki, Marty, and Mace who are all incredibly knowledgeable and individual MDs in their approach. I m hoping to take away a solid foundation in conducting from this year, so I can hopefully direct my own music with big bands in the future. What are your plans once you finish in this role? I ll be working with the Artemis Orchestra and in April I ll be heading into the studio to record an album of my original music with my nonet before making the big move overseas to Graz, Austria, where I ll be studying a Masters of Jazz Composition, and will be learning with Ed Partyka. 28

And your career from there? My only hope is to keep writing and playing big band music! From my years in WAYJO I ve developed a real love for this music, and cannot imagine doing anything else with my life. The Assistant Music Director position is supported by the Simon Lee Foundation 29

WAYJO International Exchange Thanks to the support of some wonderful partners, WAYJO s international reputation is going from strength to strength. In 2018, our artists and staff will be visiting three countries and sharing cultural experiences with musicians from around the globe. Our ongoing partnership with the University of Performing Arts in Graz, Austria, delivers Julian Argüelles for our Jazz at The Maj series, and we will be sending a staff member there as we discover new methods to inspire our musicians. Two young musicians and a Music Director will also attend the Brubeck Institute in California thanks to the Geoffrey Christian Artist Exchange fund. This is an invaluable experience for some of our younger artists to travel and work with peers from around the world in an intensive course. And finally, the jewel of WAYJO s international program, and supported by our Principal Partners North West Shelf Gas, we will welcome the staff and students of Showa University, Japan, for one week in Perth and send six of our musicians to Kawasaki in a cultural exchange program that for the last four years has delivered benefits and memories that have changed lives in both countries. WAYJO are always exploring the highest quality opportunities for our musicians to grow in their careers and experience what the world has to offer, and our thriving international exchange program is one of the best ways we can do this. We are grateful to our supporting partners for offering these experiences. 40

WAYJO Spotlight on Jess Herbert Office Manager & Assistant to the GM How did you first get involved with WAYJO? I joined the WAYJO saxophone section in 2009 whilst studying a classical saxophone degree at WAAPA. You play around Perth and teach as well, tell us a little about that. Since graduating from WAAPA in 2011, I ve worked with and played in several bands around town and several musicals as a pit musician. Now I run my own band called the Perth Cabaret Collective which is a 10 piece Trad Jazz band. I started teaching in 2010 at John Septimus Roe Anglican School whilst in my second year at WAAPA and I now work at UWA where I take the UWA Jazz Ensemble broadening unit, the UWA Junior Saxophone School and teach privately at home. What have been some of your highlights during your time at WAYJO, as both a band and staff member? Looking back on my time now, it s incredible to see how much of an effect WAYJO has had on my playing career to date. My most memorable WAYJO moment when I was a member would have to be playing with Fred Wesley at the Perth Concert Hall. As a staff member there are so many highlights. For me the true highlight of my job is working with our incredible musicians every day. The privilege of watching our members progress and become the next leaders in our jazz industry is truly humbling. 42

What are you looking forwards to in WAYJO s future? WAYJO s future is very, very bright. If the success of this year is anything to go by, I think the next few years are going to see WAYJO come into it s own as one of the leading youth arts organisations in Australia. I m so lucky to be part of such a small but dedicated team here at WAYJO and I look forward to celebrating many more successes in the year to come. 43
