DAILY QUESTIONS 22nd JUNE 18 REASONING - SYLLOGISM

I.1) Directions for question: In each of the questions given below three statements are followed by two conclusions numbered I and II. You have to take the given statements to be true even if they seem to be at variance with commonly known facts. Read all the conclusions and then decide which of the given conclusion logically follows from the statements, disregarding commonly unknown facts. Give answer [a] if only conclusion I follows. [b] if only conclusion II follows. [c] if either conclusion I or conclusion II follows. [d] if neither conclusion I nor conclusion II follows. [e] if both conclusions I and II follows.

Q.1) Statements: Some foods are forest. Some floods are flutes. All forests are frozen. Conclusions: I. Some foods are not frozen is a possibility. II. Some frozen are forests. Solution (e)

I.2) Directions for question: In each of the questions given below three statements are followed by two conclusions numbered I and II. You have to take the given statements to be true even if they seem to be at variance with commonly known facts. Read all the conclusions and then decide which of the given conclusion logically follows from the statements, disregarding commonly unknown facts. Give answer : [a] if only conclusion I follows. [b] if only conclusion II follows. [c] if either conclusion I or conclusion II follows. [d] if neither conclusion I nor conclusion II follows. [e] if both conclusions I and II follows.

Q.2) Statements: No boy is a postgraduate. Some postgraduates are girls. All girls are intelligent. Conclusions: I. All boys being intelligent is a possibility. II. No boy is a girl. Solution (a)

I.3) Directions for question: Each question has a main statement followed by four statements labelled A, B, C and D. Choose the ordered pair of the statements where the first statement implies the second and the two statements are logically consistent with the main statement. Q.3) Ram does not drive when he drinks. (I) Ram drove. (II) Ram didn't drink. (III) Ram didn't drive. (IV) Ram drink. [a] BA [b] CA [c] CD [d] DC

Solution: 3 (d) Ram never drives when he drinks does not imply that for all the times Ram doesn't drink he drives, thus [a] is out. [b] does not make sense. [c] cannot be assumed for the same reason as [a]. However [d] is true. Hence, [d].

I.4) Directions for question: Each question has a main statement followed by four statements labelled A, B, C and D. Choose the ordered pair of the statements where the first statement implies the second and the two statements are logically consistent with the main statement. Q.4) Only Intelligent Investors manage money well. A. Harsh manages money well. B. Harsh is an Intelligent Investor. C. Harsh does not manage money well. D. Harsh is not an Intelligent Investor. [a] DC [b] AD [c] CD [d] CB

Solution: 4 (a) If only Intelligent Investor manage money well than the fact that Harsh is not an Intelligent Investor implies that he does not manage money well. Hence [a].

I.5) Directions for question: From the six statements choose the set of three statements where the third statement can be logically drawn from the first two statements. Q.5) A. Trout lay eggs. B. Mammals have hair. C. Route are fish. D. Platypuses are mammals. E. All fish lay eggs. F. Platypuses have hair. [a] ACE [b] DFB [c] AEF [d] CEA

Solution: 5 (d) T = Trout; F = Fish; E = Things that lay eggs If Trout are fish and all fish lay eggs, then Trout will lay eggs as well. Hence [d].

I.6) Directions for question: From the six statements choose the set of three statements where the third statement can be logically drawn from the first two statements. Q.6) A. A little power corrupts a little. B. Power corrupts. C. A dictator has absolute power. D. A dictator is absolutely corrupt. E. Corruption is absolute power. F. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. [a] BAF [b] EDF [c] BFC [d] FCD

Solution: 6 (d) D = Dictator; P = Absolute Power; C = Absolute Corruption Though option [a] might confuse you, you will see that statement (F) does not flow logically from the first two statements. Options [b] and [c] do not make sense. Hence, [d].

I.7) Directions for question: Each question has a set of three statements. Each statement has three segments. Choose the alternative where the third segment in the statement can be logically deduced using both the preceding two but not just one of them. Q.7) A. All chairs are desks. Some tables are desks. Some chairs are desks. B. Some umbrellas are pencils. All chocolates are pencils. Some chocolates are umbrellas. C. Some watches are pins. No cap is a pin. No watch is a cap. [a] Only A [b] A and C [c] A and B [d] Only C [e] None of these

Solution: 7 (e) Statement A is not valid because some chairs are desks is drawn only on the basis of the first premise: All chairs are desks. The conclusion is not derived from the two premises. If some umbrellas are pencils and all chocolates are pencils, we can conclude that some chocolates 'maybe' umbrellas. We cannot say for the sure that some chocolates 'are' umbrellas. or

Again, if some watches are pins, and no cap is a pin, then some watches 'may' or 'may not be' caps. We cannot conclude for sure that no watch is a cap. or Thus, none of these statements follow. Hence, [e].

I.8) Directions for question: Each question has a set of three statements. Each statement has three segments. Choose the alternative where the third segment in the statement can be logically deduced using both the preceding two but not just one of them. Q.8) A. All singers Can Dance. Some animals Can Dance. Some animals are singers. B. Only heroes act in a movie. Gautam acts in a movie. Gautam is a hero. C. Some brave are famous. All famous are handsome. Some brave are handsome. [a] B and C [b] Only B [c] A and C [d] A and B [e] All of these

Solution: 8 (a) Statement (A) is not valid: If all singers Can Dance, and some animals Can Dance, we cannot conclude that some animals are singers. We can only conclude that some animals 'may be' singers. or or

Statement B is valid: If only heroes act in a movie and Gautam acts in a movie, we can conclude that Gautam is a hero.

Statement C is also valid: If some brave are famous and all famous are handsome then we can conclude that some brave are handsome. or Thus, B and C are valid. Hence, [a].

I.9) Directions for question: Each question has four sets of statements. Each set of statements have three segments. Choose the option where the third segment can be logically drawn from the first two segments (and not just one of them). Q.9) A. Superstars have massive egos. Arnold has a massive ego. Arnold is a superstar. B. All milk shakes are alcoholic. Beer is alcoholic. Beer is a milkshake. C. Some baskets have oranges. Some baskets have Apples. Baskets have either apples or oranges. D. No Briton wants to lie. Grant wants to lie. Grant is not a Briton. [a] A and D [b] B only [c] D only [d] C and D

Solution: 9(c) If no Briton wants to lie and Grant wants to live then grant cannot be a Briton. Hence, [c].

I.10) Directions for question: Each question has four sets of statements. Each set of statements have three segments. Choose the option where the third segment can be logically drawn from the first two segments (and not just one of them). Q.10) A. No fruits have vitamins. All vegetables have vitamins. Vegetables are not fruits. B. Some plants are money plants. Rubber plants are money plants. Money plants are rubber plants. C. Superman will destroy all Evil. Satan is evil. Satan will destroy Superman. D. All's well that ends well. The play did not end. The play was not well. [a] A only [b] A and C [c] A and D [d] None of these

Solution: 10 (a) If no fruits have vitamins and all vegetables have vitamins then vegetables cannot be fruits. Hence, [a].
