LANmark-OF Zone Distribution Box The Installation of a Fibre Zone Distribution Box must be carried out with care and precision. Make shure to work on a clean and level work surface. In the package following items are included: 1 Zone Distribution Box 2 small bolts 1 Nut to fix splicetrays on the fixed bolt All other products must be purchased seperatly, the product numbers are mentioned where needed. Phase 1 Preparation of the Zone Distribution Box Leave some extra cable (± 5m) at different places on the cable link. This makes it easier to repair in case of a broken cable. A minimum of 3 meters OF cable should be foreseen at the ZDBox side the as this will facilitate the termination of the cable in the OF ZDBox. Preferably do the termination of the OF in the ZDBox on a table before screwing the ZDbox into it s final place. Always cut the first meter of cable as this part can be damaged after pulling the cable, bending, water damage... More specific installation guidelines on indoor optical fibre cable can be obtained from our Optical Fibre Indoor Cable INSTALLATION GUIDE which is available from our NCS website. Fixation of the ZDBox can be done with four optional screws. Special holes are foreseen in every corner. The advantage of the Snap-in ZDBox is the flexibility to accept different types of couplers and connectors. Four versions can be installed by using the LANmark snap-in couplers. These couplers must be purchased seperatly. Available couplers are: DSC, SC, 2LC and MT-RJ Please be aware that patchcords with a DSC connector are not compatible with two separate SC couplers. The orientation of the key member is different. Please consult the list below. First remove the protective caps on the front of the couplers. Snap the couplers into the ZDBox by hooking the top of the coupler under the front mounting plate and then lowering the coupler into its aperture.! Make sure to keep the protective caps in place on the back of the couplers during installation to avoid ingress of dust. Do not remove the shutters. To remove the coupler: put a small screwdriver under the connector in the opening to unlock. Nexans Cabling Solutions Installation Guide Optical Fibre LANmark-OF ZDBl - 5
Phase 3 Fibre termination Two termination practices are supported depending the used construction of your fibre cable. In case of loose tube construction we advice to fusion splice to pigtails using a splice tray for protection. Due to the fragile nature of the 250µm fibre we advice not to use direct connectorisation a special microtube (N890.045) must be used to protect the fibre when direct termination is chosen. In case of tight buffer constructions both fusion splicing with pigtails and connectorisation are possible. Following table may help you choose the preferred method. Consult specific guidelines on removing the outer jacket depending the construction. Avoid damaging the fibres while cutting the outer jacket and yarns. For 250µ fibres the tube must be removed leaving at least two loops in the ZDBox. Make sure to clean the fibres with De-Solv-It to remove the gel. 1000 Nexans Cabling Solutions Installation Guide Optical Fibre LANmark-OF ZDB - 6
You must use an optional cable gland (PG-16) to bring in the fibre cable at the back. Fix a permanent label on the fibre cable for future identification. Make sure the cable is fixed in the cable gland. Provide at least two spare loops in the ZDBox. Measure the length of each fibre to the coupler respecting both bending radius and the color order and cut the rest of the fibre. Take the fibres out of the ZDBox and mount the connectors on the fibres. When mounting connectors on 250 µ fibre you will need to use an optional microtube (N890.045) to reduce risk of damaging the fibre. It is advisable to label the fibres for easy identification. Remove the dust protection caps on backside of the couplers where connectors will be inserted. A quick cleanness check of the couplers may be advisable. Compressed air or alcohol can be used to clean the couplers if there is ingress of dust. Loop the fibres back in the ZDBox and insert while respecting the colour coding the mounted connectors in the couplers. The fibres can be held together with tie wraps. The Recommendations to maintain duplex OF channel polarity technical paper, which is available from our NCS website, should be considered when choosing the colour order. Phase 3B Termination with fusion splicing In case of tight buffer fibre: Un-strip the fibre cable to a length of at least 1 meter to allow enough spare fibre for later maintenance purposes. Consult specific guidelines on removing the outer jacket depending the construction. Avoid damage to the fibres while cutting the outer jacket and yarns. 1000 In case of loose tube fibre: Remove 1 meter of outer sheath from the tube. Use the correct tools in order not to damage the fibres while cutting the tube. An optional cable gland (PG-16) has to be used to affix the cable to the ZDBox. Fix a permanent label on the fibre cable for future identification. Nexans Cabling Solutions Installation Guide Optical Fibre LANmark-OF ZDB - 8
Up to 2 splice trays may be installed to hold up to 24 fibre splices. Splicetrays for fibre splice protections are available in metallic or heatshrink versions. It is advisable to install a maximum of 12 splice protections per tray. Fix the first splicetray over the bolt in the ZDBox with the nut. Remove the tube from the fibre over a length to allow fixation in the splicetray (A) by means of tie wraps. Clean the fibres with De-Solv-it to remove the gel. Make sure to have at least two loops of loose fibres in the splicetray. Up to twelve fibres can be installed using a heat shrink or a metallic protection splicetray. In case of using a fibre cable with more than 12 250µm fibres separation of extra fibres is needed. This can only be done by splitting the fibres with an optional Y- Splitter module N890.144 (C) + 2 lengths of empty tube for splicetrays N890.145 to insert the fibres for protection. Remove the dustcaps from the couplers on the inside of the ZDBox. A quick cleanness check of the couplers may be advisable. Compressed air or alcohol can be used to clean the couplers if there is ingress of dust. Insert the connectors of the pigtails in the couplers. Measure the length of the 900µ buffer needed to fix the pigtail in the comb (B) of the splicetray keeping in mind a minimum bending radius. The fibres from the pigtails should make at least two loops in the opposite direction. Our Maxi strip pigtails allow to remove the 900µ buffer in one go after being cut at the right length. Cut the first 12 fibres to the right length and joint them by fusion splicing with pigtails respecting the colour sequence. The Recommendations to maintain duplex OF channel polarity technical paper, which is available from our NCS website, should be considered when choosing the colour order. C A B Up to 2 splice trays can be installed if needed. Don t forget to label the pigtails. Close the splice tray with the cover and fix with the nut. Protect the splices with a metallic N890.003 or a heat shrink splice protector N890.021. Fixate the splice protector into the correct splicetray at the designated place and gently loop the fibres back in the splice tray. For splicetray with metallic splice protection use N890.010 For splicetray with heat shrink protection use N890.020 For splicetray cover use N890.022 After installation of the first splicetray you may insert the other fibres from the same cable in the empty tube and fix the tube to the second splicetray and fusion splice the left over fibres. Nexans Cabling Solutions Installation Guide Optical Fibre LANmark-OF ZDB - 10
Phase 4 Finalization of the installation The ZDBox can now be gently closed, fix the top lid with the 2 small bolts on the sides and then install the ZDBox in the designated place by means of screws if not already done. Loop the extra fibre cable back in a safe place while respecting minimum bending radius. Label the ports conform the company policy. The ZDBox is now installed. The ZDBox also has a bolt at the back if connection to the earth is requested Do not remove the shutters on the front of the ZDBox because they prevent ingress of dirt in the couplers. Patchcables can be connected easily just by opening the shutters at the front. Nexans Cabling Solutions Installation Guide Optical Fibre LANmark-OF ZDB - 11
