BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Jakob (Jacob) Schramm was born in 1805 on a hops farm in Bavaria. In 1835 he left Germany and sailed to America with his wife, Johanna (Junghans) and daughter, having previously arranged the purchase of one hundred and sixty acres of land in Sugar Creek Township through a friend. The Schramm's proceeded from New York to Hancock County, Indiana. Mr. Schramm was a successful farmer and business man. He was the first man in Hancock County to engage in the manufacture of drain tile. Jacob's second daughter, Matilda, (1835 1902) married Henry Schnull on December 11, 1856 in Hancock County. Henry Schnull (1833 1905) was born in Hausberge, Porta Westphalica, Germany. Schnull began as a farm produce buyer and became a successful retail grocer. A & H Schnull (later named Severin, Schnull & Co.) was the first wholesale grocery on Meridian Street in Indianapolis. Henry Schnull was the founder and first President of Merchants National Bank, as well as one of the originators of The German House (Das Deutsche Haus) one of the leading German clubs in the west. Henry and Matilda had 4 children. Their two eldest daughters, Emma (1857 1939) and Nannie (1860 1929) married Clemens and Bernard Vonnegut, brothers from Indianapolis. Emma and Clemens were married on September 4, 1878 in Indianapolis. Clemens, of Clemens Vonnegut Hardware, was also the president of the Indianapolis Coffin Company. Nannie and Bernard Vonnegut were married on September 19, 1883. Bernard studied architecture in Hanover, Germany and became a partner in the Vonnegut-Bohn Architecture Firm in Indianapolis. This partnership designed such well known Indianapolis landmarks as the Athenaeum, The Fletcher Trust Bank Building, Shortridge High School, and both the L.S. Ayres and Wm. H. Block Store Buildings. (Bernard is the father of architect Kurt Vonnegut, Sr. and the grandfather of author Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.) The only son of Henry and Matilda, Gustav (1862 1923) was a wholesale grocery merchant like his father. Henry and Matilda's fourth child, a daughter Julia (1864 1926) married John George Mueller (1860 1932). J. George Mueller was a wholesale drug merchant in Indianapolis and eventually became partner and treasurer of the Mooney-Mueller Drug, Co. Julia and George had two children; Clemens Otto (1889 1963) married Zuleme Kinney (1890 1976) of Indianapolis and was involved in the wholesale drug business as well as a real estate and investment company, and Norma Julia (1892 1977). SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE This collection is made up of 7 manuscript boxes and 2 photograph boxes. The majority of the items in this collection were compiled and held privately by Marjorie Jean Mueller, daughter of Clemens and Zuleme (Kinney) Mueller and most of it pertains to them. A small part of the collection includes Schramm and Schnull family documents, genealogies, and photographs. The first series of this collection contains family documents and personal materials pertaining to the Mueller and Kinney families. Items include school programs, newspaper clippings, family and business correspondence, biographical essays, real estate and construction documents, and genealogical records. The second series is primarily made up of loose memorabilia items from the diaries of Clemens O. Mueller, recorded between 1899 and 1912. Some of the items included are school announcements, travel souvenirs, newspaper clippings, and theater programs. The third series is made up of the handwritten journals of Clemens O. Mueller. These are bound diaries that were written between 1899 and 1912. This also includes a business ledger from Mueller Realty & investment Co. for the year 1930. The fourth series consists of black and white photographs taken from the photo albums of Marjorie J. Mueller. These photos pertain to the family and friends of Clemens and Zuleme (Kinney) Mueller. Also included are series of photographs that record the construction of the Mueller's home at 3829 Washington Blvd. beginning in 1917. The dates of the photographs range primarily from the late 1890's through 1930. However a few photographs are dated in the late 1860's. Also included is a printed postcard of Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. taken in New York in 1972 and an undated color photograph of Marjorie Mueller with a young girl, taken late in her life but undated.
