A huge thank you goes to the Wreath and Coffee Sale committee, volunteers and all of the students (and parents) that did such a great job selling! Just over $46, 000 of products were sold, providing $18,500 to support the District 28 Music program. The money that is raised provides music enrichment, uniforms, music scholarships and tour lunches for our young musicians. None of this would be possible without the many volunteers who gave their time and energy to support the Music Parents Club annual fundraiser! THANK YOU! This is the time of the year when parent - teacher groups recruit volunteers for committees and board positions. The Music Parents Club is also in need of help. Many of the current Board members are approaching their last years as parents of District 28 musicians. If you are looking for a way to support your children s activities, this is a great group to join! We would love to have you join us at a meeting. Monthly meetings are held on the second Wednesday at noon in the Homer O. Harvey meeting room in the District office. If you want to help, but are unable to attend weekday meetings, that s fine, too. A number of jobs associated with the Wreath and Coffee Sale, don t require attending a meeting. We are in need of parents who have any amount of time to give to the organization. Cadet Orchestra Event On February 4, Cadet Orchestra members enjoyed a special enrichment event. The students reviewed their work in the Music Theory packets and their progress in tuning their instruments. Students enjoyed a performance by a Bass Duo from the Elgin Symphony. The presentation included a section about jazz and the blues. The Cadet Orchestra will have a special breakfast provided by Sunset foods. String Orchestra Concert Band Tour of Schools Tim Shaffer and John Floeter, base players from the Elgin Symphony The String Orchestra and Concert Band are scheduled to tour the District 28 elementary schools on Friday, March 4th. MPC is providing lunch for this tour. Final information on this event will be given to students in rehearsals. 3
Orchestra Notes Beginning Orchestra Recitals Beginning Orchestra members will perform in their first recital on Saturday, March 19 on the stage at Northbrook Junior High. Due to the large size of the ensemble, there will be two performances: the first at 11:00 AM, and the second at 1:30 PM. Students will be assigned to perform at only one of the recitals, and both should last about an hour. Performers should dress nicely and arrive a half-hour before the start of their recital for tuning and warmup. This is always an exciting and memorable event; as for most it is their first time performing solo on their instrument. Beginning Cellists, Reese and Cormick Beginning Violinists, Christine and Stephanie a Philharmonic and Chamber Orchestra Tour of Schools The Philharmonic and Chamber Orchestras are preparing for a tour of the elementary schools on Monday, April 11. MPC is providing lunch for this event as well. More information will be made available through rehearsals regarding this event. Summer Orchestra Lessons This summer the orchestra department will offer interested students 4 half-hour long (private) string lessons. Lessons will be held during the 4 weeks of summer school, June 13th through July 8th, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays during the hours of 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The cost for the 4 string lessons is $94. The registration deadline is May 27, 2016. See the registration form included in this newsletter, on page 5. Northshore Concert Band ( NCB ) is a 100-member symphonic band that performs throughout the Chicago metropolitan area. Now in its 60th season, NCB has become internationally known and respected for its musical excellence, leadership in community music, and service to music education. As a part of this special evening, NBJH Wind Ensemble will be part of an open clinic with the NCB Artistic Director, Dr. Mallory Thompson. Dr. Thompson is director of bands, professor of music, coordinator of the conducting program, and holds the John W. Beattie Chair of Music at Northwestern University. In 2003 she was named a Charles Deering McCormick Professor of Teaching Excellence. As the third person in the university s history to hold the director of bands position, Dr. Thompson conducts the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, teaches undergraduate and graduate conducting, and administers all aspects of the band program. Thompson has recorded four albums with the Northwestern University Symphonic Wind Ensemble on the Summit Records label. Additionally, NBJH Wind Ensemble will perform alongside the NCB on Randall Standridge s Rowan Tree. Please join us for this special event! Concert Band & String Orchestra Tour of Schools Friday, March 4 Concert Band & String Orchestra will be performing for all three elemenetary schools on Friday, March 4th. They will be participating in the NIU Concert Band Festival. The Wind Ensemble will also receive a special clinic as a part of the experience, and will nish their day with a lunch on campus, sponsored by Music Parents Club, and watching a performance by the NIU Wind Symphony. 5th Grade Band Parent Meeting Monday, March 14, 6:15pm Parents of current 5th grade band members are invited and encouraged to attend a brief, informative meeting about the opportunities your 5th grader will have next year as a 6th grader in Concert Band (and beyond!). Ms. Stone will facilitate the pre-concert meeting. Please come with any and all questions! Beginning Band, Junior Band & Concert Band Spring Concert Monday, March 14, 7:00pm Beginning Band, Junior Band & Concert Band will perform Monday, March 14, 2016, showing off the skills they ve learned since winter. This is a great opportunity for our younger performers to get a sneak peak at what they ll get to do as 6th and 7th graders at NBJH! Time to think about SUMMER... already?!! Got Camp? The Music Parents Club continues to offer scholarships to music students who attend eligible music camps over the summer. Applications are available on the MPC website and in Mrs. Whitaker s classroom. Baby Update Mrs. Whitaker is happy to share that she is expecting her second child due in mid- April. Choir students will be working in April and May with a substitute choir director to complete final preparations for the Spring Choral Concert in May. Questions? Area junior high choirs performed in addition to several of the GBN academic and extra-curricular choirs. The evening concluded with a combined choir piece sung in Swahili titled Jambo. Kudos to the entire choir for representing our school with such pride and excellence! Bravo! 6th Grade Choir performs under the direction of Paul Langford On December 14, the 6th Grade Choir, Philharmonic Orchestra & Concert Band had the honor of performing the song How Many Christmases under the direction of singer/arranger/composer Paul Langford, who arranged the song specifically for the NBJH groups that performed. Alice in Wonderland JR. Coming Soon! PERFORMANCE DATES: Thursday, March 10, 7pm Friday, March 11, 7pm Saturday, March 12, 2pm Tickets are general admission seating ($7 each) and go on sale in the NBJH office on Monday, Feb. 8th. The students enjoyed working with Mr. Langford on two separate occasions in preparation for their Winter Concert performance. Summer Music Camps It s time to start registering for summer music camp. Summer music camps are a fun and popular thing to do in the summer! Interested? Need more information? Contact your ensemble director or lesson teacher, or check out the suggested camps below: Music for All Middle School Concert Band Camp musicforall.org/mscamp<http://musicforall.org/mscamp> The Middle School Concert Band Camp at the Music for All Summer Symposium offers a week-long, immersive camp experience for middle school band students. Students will spend an inspired, fun week with renowned teachers, exciting artists and fellow campers from across the country. Designed from the ground up with the middle school student in mind, students will grow as both musicians and individuals. Their experience will be positively life-changing! The Middle School Concert Band Camp is designed for students entering 7th or 8th grade, with at least 1.5 years of performance experience on their instrument. (Mr. Scapillato is a coordinator for this camp.) Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp bluelake.org<http://bluelake.org/> Held in the northwoods of upper Michigan, the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp has been the choice of many of our NBJH students over the years. The camping-type atmosphere is complete with cabins for housing, campfires, and practices held outdoors. Blue Lake fosters a fun environment where the students are encouraged to grow in both personal and musical aspects. This camp offers orchestra, band and choir at the intermediate level (grades 7-9) and a junior camp (grades 5-8) for band and orchestra only. Choir is available as an elective at this camp. Illinois Summer Youth Music (ISYM) isym.music.illinois.edu<http://isym.music.illinois.edu/> ISYM is offered at the University of Illinois- Champaign campus. The grade requirements reflect those that the student will be entering the fall of 2016: Junior Orchestra (grades 6-9); Junior Band (grades 5-9); Junior Chorus (grades 7-9); and Junior Jazz Camp (grades 6-9, including three years instrumental experience). ISYM also offers specialized instrumental programs for junior high participants. Midwest Young Artists (MYA) mya.org<http://mya.org/> MYA, in Lake Forest, Illinois, offers the most comprehensive Youth Music Ensemble Program in the area, including opportunities for full orchestra, jazz ensembles, chamber ensembles, choral ensembles, and more. School year or summer programs are available. The summer camp program focuses on chamber music for string, wind, brass, percussion students. There is also a Voices Rising vocal camp. Residential and commuter options are available. Interlochen Fine Arts Camp interlochen.org<http://interlochen.org/> This well-known fine arts camp, located in Interlochen, Michigan, offers an intensified program for students in instrumental and vocal music. The camp offers two sessions during the summer. Applications are due February 1, 2016; those received after the deadline will be considered as space permits. Two divisions are available: Junior Division for students who have completed grades 3-6; and Intermediate Division for students who have completed grades 6-9. MPC Summer Music Camp Scholarships Your child may be eligible for a scholarship grant for summer music camp from the Music Parents Club. If your child is in Grade 6, 7 or 8 and sold at least $200 worth of products in the Wreath & Coffee Sale this past fall, check out the application form on the next page for more details. The deadline to apply is Friday, March 25, 2016. 13
Scholarship Application for Summer Music Camp An important part of fulfilling the MPC mission is encouraging our students to continue with their music education during the summer months. The MPC sets aside funds when possible to assist parents with the cost of sending their children to summer camps specifically devoted to the study of music. Please fill out the information on this page and return this form to your child s director by Friday, March 25, 2016. Forms can be given to NBJH Office. Requirements: Money is available to students who attend a MUSIC summer camp to enhance their skill on the PRIMARY instrument they play in a district music group (those that meet before school, including choir). A maximum of $250 is available ($375/family) depending on the number of students requesting funds and the total cost of the camp. Each scholarship will not exceed 50% of the total cost of the camp. Only Students currently in Grades 6-8 are eligible Students must have sold a minimum of $200 in the Wreath & Coffee Sale to be eligible for a scholarship. This requirement was listed in the purple pamphlet included in the sales material. Announcement of scholarships will be made in early May. Funds will be paid directly to the designated camp.
