Comp II Short Stories & Novellas Revised Jan. 2011 Dean From Temple College Home page, click on link to the Library. Electronic Book Resources Fast way to find databases that have ebooks which can be used from Cameron. Click on Temple College Library Catalog 1. Catalog To find books with literary criticism use Subject Terms search. change search to Subject Terms by clicking on that tab. To find books that have literary criticism in them, do NOT search by the title of the story; search by the author using this type of search. Last name first, first name. For example: Type in Poe, Edgar Search Look through the list of links, you will see two of Poe s short stories with a link on this page (Cask of Amontillado, Fall of the House of Usher) those links will lead to a database with criticism information for those stories. Look down the links until you see one with Criticism and Interpretation (17), click on the link. Unfortunately, it is usually not possible to find out within the catalog page which stories are being discussed in the book you are viewing. Sometimes a book will have a picture of the book cover, and you can click on that to find further information such as a table of contents, summary, or review. In one of these there may be titles listed that are discussed in the book. Click on the link to the first book in the list (Bloom s how to write about Edgar Allan Poe) Then click on the cover image at left. Click on the Table of Contents link. Scrolling down, the stories and poems discussed in the book are listed. Back to list of books.

Sometimes you will have to request the book in order to find out whether it has information that can help you. You can have up to 20 books checked out, so don t be afraid to ask for a few if you think you can use them. Books circulate for 3 weeks, just before the end of the 3 weeks, you can renew the book or books for another 3 weeks, so you can keep a book nearly 6 weeks. You will need to allow time for the book to be delivered back to TC by Mrs. Dean. When you see the list of books, each title will be in blue and underlined, which is a link. If you see a book with a green check mark, that book is available at the library. If you think that the book would be useful, you can request that it be sent to you. Give the call number of the book or books you would like to Mrs. Dean, and she will take care of getting the book for you to use. She would also like the book title and author, but for the library, the most important thing is the call number. Books that have the words Web Access under the date of publication and [electronic resource] in the title link are electronic versions of the book, and are available to you from your school or home as long as you know your TC user name and password. Click on the title for the third book on the list: The Cambridge companion to Edgar Allan Poe [electronic resource] / edited by Kevin J. Hayes This book is from a database of electronic books called netlibrary. TC subscribes to several electronic book databases. The books are real published books, different from the paper version only in that they are available through the database. They are as good as the paper version. Scroll down the page a bit, and you will see information about the book. In this book record, you do see a contents section, which gives some idea about the subjects of the chapters including some with stories by Poe that are written about. Click on the in netlibrary collection link The link takes you to the netlibrary database, with this book s link next to the picture you see. The next step to do would be to click on View this ebook and you will see a table of contents, search box, and ways to move through the ebook. It is pretty easy to figure out. Click on the Home icon in the browser to the TC Home page, then click on Library, then Databases. 2. Databases (a searchable collection of digital documents [usually journal and magazine articles and books] created by a company and usage rights sold to libraries) All databases can be used from home, when clicking on link to db you will have to enter your TC user name and password.

Literature Section CITING SOURCES mla sites; OWL; Knight Cite Online citation builder DB search tips: Check spelling if no results user spelling errors are the most common database problem. Check the HELP section of databases to learn about other options. The DB s discussed in this orientation are not all of the ones available, other DB s may have information that could be useful. Read the description of each database to see what it covers. Gale Virtual Reference Library-Literature Good for Novels, Short Stories and Poetry. Some of the articles will contain Author biography and will have criticism and other information. Excellent database to use to begin research since the documents will contain a variety of information. Type in search box Heart of Darkness Click on underlined title for the 4th article to open it. Notice the various sections of the article. Source citation near end. Literature Resource Center This database has a mix of journal articles and some reference sources. Name of work: Barn Burning Person by or about: Faulkner Search Tabs two active, Literature Criticism and Topic and Work Overviews Open article Print/Email options in Tools box at top. Citation toward bottom of open article or through Tools. Literature Criticism Online This database has access to the Short Story Criticism reference book collection.

In the box type in the story title: Everyday Use Search Change keyword to named work Click on the link for the first article in the result list. On the next screen, click on Titles Discussed Everyday Use has several sections of pages for it, the largest number of pages are probably the best places to start. Click on 310-316. The title is highlighted or in bold on the pages. If you scroll to the bottom of the page, you will see a citation. Unfortunately, this is MLA 6 th edition, not the current 7 th edition. Much of the information is needed, but it would have to be modified to 7 th edition for you to use it for your citation. It is also a citation to the volume not the individual articles that are in the section on Alice Walker. Consult your teacher on how to handle the citation. It is possible to save the document by clicking on Print/View PDF. If you want the entire section about the writer, select the larger page range, 246-350. Click on Submit Request, a PDF doc will be created, which you can save to your computer. Be sure and get the citation information, as it won t be displayed in the PDF section. Click on Temple College link. JSTOR This database has articles from earlier time periods than the others we have looked at, many originally published in the early 20 th century. In the first search box type Old Man and the Sea In second box type last name of author Hemingway Very Important, uncheck the Include links to external content, which will include articles that have to be paid extra for to view. Limit to Article Language: English Scroll down further and from the Disciplines and/or Titles section, select Language & Literature Go back up above the Limit To section and click on the search button. Open article by clicking title.

Citation data is given in View Citation, but it is not formatted into MLA 7 th edition. Necessary parts missing are the medium (Web) and date of access elements. Can save as a PDF by clicking on View PDF link. Magill on Literature Plus This database is composed of information gathered from reference books. In the empty search box type Animal Farm, in the empty box below, type Orwell click on search. Click on the title for the 11th article in the list, (on second page of results) this gives a great deal of information about the story. Citation found by clicking on Cite in the Tools group at the right side. Netlibrary Electronic book database. Will have many books available with criticism and all are available from home. One successful way to search in netlibrary is to include the title of the story, the word criticism, and the last name of the author. For example: Type in search box: Daisy Miller criticism james Unlike other databases, it does not hurt to type all these words consecutively in one search box.

Search. If you have been assigned a story to research, try typing in the title, criticism and the last name of the author. It is also possible sometimes to find the text of a short story by typing the name of the story in the netlibrary search box. Change the search type from Full Text to Title for best results. Two examples that worked were Poe s Cask of Amontillado, and Tell-tale Heart. If you find the electronic books useful you can create a personal user account, and create a bookmark list of ebooks you have used and would like to remember. You can create an account by clicking on the link to create an account in the upper right corner. Go to the Help section in netlibrary and you will find instructions and examples there.
