American Women s Network of Abu Dhabi November 2017 3 introducing AWN s activities team MEET THE BRIDGE COORDINATORS Sara Healey Hello everyone. I developed a passion for bridge 31 years ago during our first overseas assignment to Singapore! We moved here 18 months ago after over 20 years in London, leaving a daughter there and another daughter in the US. Bridge has been a great way to get to know other ladies here and we have a lot of fun playing AWN bridge on Sundays. As bridge coordinator for AWN, I have also enjoyed introducing bridge to many enthusiastic learners. Fiona is my assistant coordinator and she has been brilliant at assisting, organizing, helping with classes, and pitching in when needed. Thanks Fiona! Also, a special thanks to Lynn McNair who has helped with bridge lessons! Fiona Paterson Hi, my name is Fiona and I help Sara run the bridge group. I was born in Scotland and moved to Surrey about 35 years ago, before heading to Abu Dhabi 2.5 years ago with my husband David. We have two children who are still in the UK, who thankfully manage to visit us regularly and enjoy the delights of Abu Dhabi. I learned to play bridge through the AWN one year ago and can honestly say I love the game. The more you play and understand the rules the more you enjoy it. I now help Sara to teach bridge and would encourage anyone to come along and learn this wonderful game. The bridge group are all lovely and welcoming ladies. philanthropy AWN PHOTO CONTEST Calling all photographers! American Women s Network of Abu Dhabi November 2017 4 membership services OCTOBER ACTIVITIES Newcomers to Abu Dhabi connect with AWN during special coffees in October. Friends of AWN Coffee monthly activities ART CLUB The Art Club is where people who have an interest in painting meet and paint together. This is not only for beginners, but also for those who already have experience in the past. As a group, we desire to understand and participate in the creative process. We meet at the National Theater Studio every Monday from 10 a.m. till 12 noon. Regretfully, due to temporary space constraints, the AWN Art Club is not accepting new members. We hope to reopen the club to the new members shortly. When membership reopens, we will post in the AWN Newsletter. For more information, contact Julia Kim at artclub@awnabudhabi.com. BOOK CLUB The book selection for November 27 is Old Filth by Jane Gardam. Sir Edward Feathers has had a brilliant career, from his early days as a lawyer in Southeast Asia, where he earned the nickname Old Filth (FILTH being an acronym for Failed In London Try Hong Kong) to his final working days as a respected judge at the English bar. Yet through it all he has carried with him the wounds of a difficult and emotionally hollow childhood. Now an eighty-year-old widower living in comfortable seclusion in Dorset, Feathers is finally free from the regimen of work and the sentimental scaffolding that has sustained him throughout his life. He slips back into the past with ever mounting frequency and intensity, and on the tide of these vivid, lyrical musings, Feathers approaches a reckoning with his own history. Not all the old filth, it seems, can be cleaned away. Borrowing from biography and history, Jane Gardam has written a literary masterpiece reminiscent of Rudyard Kipling s Baa Baa, Black Sheep that retraces much of the twentieth century s torrid and momentous history. Feathers childhood in Malaya during the British Empire s heyday, his schooling in pre-war England, his professional success in Southeast Asia and his return to England toward the end of the millennium, are vantage points from which the reader can observe the march forward of an eventful era and the steady progress of that man, Sir Edward Feathers, Old Filth himself, who embodies the century s fate. (Europa) We meet on the 4th Monday of the month in various locations, coffee shop/host s flat. We have two meeting times. Afternoon group meets 1-3 p.m., and Evening group meets 7-9 p.m. You can sign up at the AWN Coffee Morning or by email at bookclub@awnabudhabi.com.

PINK LADIES TOURNAMENT It was a fun day out followed by a buffet, and all for a good cause. Most recently the AWN was well represented in the Abu Dhabi Golf Club Tournament on October 25th. Once again the four-ball scramble format gave beginners and advanced players the opportunity to play golf together and later socialize at lunch. The AWN Ladies Golf owes its ongoing success to the enthusiastic participation of its members, for which we are very grateful. As always, we appreciate the excellent coaching from the team in the Abu Dhabi Golf Club. Join the AWN lady golfers every Wednesday morning at Abu Dhabi Golf Club, Sas El Nakhl. Intermediate lessons begin at 9 a.m. for one hour followed by a round of play on the 9-hole Garden Course (cost 210 AED). Beginner lessons are held at 10:45 a.m. for one hour (cost 110 AED). Join the fun! explorers EXPLORERS Upcoming Events Tuesday, November 7: Dubai Opera Private Tour Time: 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. // Cost: 250 AED Meet at Mushrif Mall, by taxi stand at 8:15 a.m. Bus departs promptly at 8:30 a.m. Bus returns to Abu Dhabi at 3 p.m. Located just steps from the Burj Khalifa, in what s billed as the most prestigious square kilometre in the world, the iconic dhow-shaped building of Dubai Opera is a masterpiece of contemporary design, and a stylish tribute to Dubai s maritime history. Designed by Janus Rostock, the space has the exceptional ability to transform into three modes; from a theatre into a concert hall, to a flat floor mode, becoming a banquet or event hall. Enjoy a Three-Course meal at Sean Connolly, a contemporary brasserie, with an uncomplicated and producedriven menu serving seafood and steak, interlaced with Australian and New Zealand influences. The restaurant design was inspired by the highly irregular shape and scale of the Dubai Opera building. Each design element within the venue explores ideas of the sea, from the oyster with its combination of smooth sensual surface and textured outer surface to the oceanic tones and colours of corals and pearlescent hues. Sign up at the Explorers desk at the next coffee morning or email explorers@awnabudhabi.com Tuesday, November 21: Global Village Time: 2-9 p.m. // Cost: 100 AED Meeting at Mushrif Mall, near the taxi stands. Bus departs at 2 p.m. Bus returns to Abu Dhabi at 9 p.m. Excellent time to shop for festive holidays. Sign up at the next AWN coffee meeting on November 2nd or email explorers@awnabudhabi.com

American Women s Network of Abu Dhabi November 2017 7 explorers Explorers Event: AWN Members visit New York! New York University Abu Dhabi was visited by several AWN members on October 24th. The curator of the Museum, Mia Alison conducted a guided tour of the current exhibit at the NYU Art Gallery. Inventing Downtown: Artist-Run Galleries in New York City, 1952 1965 examines the New York art scene between the peak of Abstract Expressionism in the early 1950s and the rise of Pop Art and Minimalism in the early 1960s. Our guide gave us a comprehensive overview of the exhibit and then explained how the art scene of New York changed and grew during this period. The works were impressive and the thorough explanation of what we were experiencing made for an informative and delightful day! The exhibit is located at the NYUAD Campus Art Gallery and is open to the public through January 13, 2018. Thanks to our Explorer s group for organizing and be sure to check out all that NYUAD has to offer with family and friends! nyuad.nyu.edu/en/news-events/exhibitions/inventing-downtown-new-york.html Patti Hatcher & Carmen Adea culture club CULTURE CLUB The Culture Club will meet on Sunday, November 26, between 10 a.m. 12 noon.
