INTRODUCTION Olson Technology, Inc. offers an Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifier (EDFA) with mid-stage access for 1550 nm Hybrid Fiber-Coax (HFC) networks. The rear panel has additional optical connections for a mid-stage dispersion compensation module (DCM), which is required in long distance networks. The Model OTFOA-25XX features low noise figure, stable output power, and excellent environmental stability, making it an ideal optical amplifier for the HFC networks. The EDFA is made up of two main parts: The fiber gain module and the external control system. Figure 1 illustrates a block diagram of the EDFA system. Figure 1 EDFA System Block Diagram Fiber Gain Module The Fiber Gain Module amplifies the optical signal in the 1550 nm wavelength band. Figure 2 shows a block diagram of the Fiber Gain Module. input isolator isoator output tap tap PIN for input power pump1 pump2 PIN for output power micro processor computer RS232 warning and display Figure 2 EDFA Gain Module 18 July 2006 PAGE 3 of 8

External Control System The External Control System ensures that the gain module is working at optimum performance levels. Controlled by a micro-processor, it monitors the pump power, pump temperature, pump current, input power, and output power. The External Control System can also be used to adjust these parameters to ensure a stabilized output power of the gain module, and maintain ideal operating conditions. If the operating conditions drop below optimum, front panel LEDs will activate on the EDFA. A front panel LCD display also details the working parameters of the EDFA. This information can also be accessed via RS232 interface connected to an external computer. OPERATION INSTRUCTIONS Connections 1) Verify the power is off at both the power switch and the key lock. 2) Connect the EDFA to the power supply. 3) Be sure that the input optical power is in the proper range, and the optical interfaces of the patch cords used are correct for the EDFA (i.e., 1550 nm SM fiber with SC/APC optical connectors). 4) Verify that the mid-stage DCM s loss is less than 10 db. One at a time, connect the DCM optical connections to the mid-stage input and output connections on the rear panel. 5) Connect the optical patch cords to the input and output interfaces. Powering the EDFA 1) To turn on the EDFA, first turn on the power switch (on the rear panel, see Figure 4, page 4). The front panel LCD will display and LEDs will light. Next move the key switch to the ON position. The EDFA will be in the normal working state. 2) To turn off the EDFA by moving the key switch to the OFF position then turning off the power switch after a moment. LED Indications The six LEDs indicate as follows: Table 5 LED Functions LED Description Green Red Dark Comments Power Power Indicator Power On Power Off Pump Status Pump Status Indicator Normal Pump Not Working Power Off The pump will shut down under the following conditions: input power is less than -5 dbm pump temperature is higher than 35 C pump current value exceeds its limit value Indicator within -5 dbm and +10 dbm Below -5 dbm Power Off Output Power Output Power Indicator Output Power within +13 dbm and +22 dbm Output Power 2 db less than the rated output power. If any of the LEDs shows red, it indicates a problem with the EDFA. In this case, verify that: 1) The key lock is on. 2) The input power is between -2 and +10 dbm. If the input power drops below -5 dbm, the INPUT STATUS LED will show red. The pump will turn off, and the EDFA will stop working. 3) Environmental temperature is within the EDFA s operating temperature range of 0 C to 50 C. Temperatures above 50 C will cause the TEC current to exceed its limit; the OVERTEMP LED will show red when this occurs. When the pump temperature exceeds 35 C, the EDFA will shut off the pump automatically, and the PUMP STATUS LED will also show red. The EDFA will not operate properly in temperatures below 0 C. Contact Olson Technology, Inc. if the problem cannot be solved. Do not attempt to repair it, or the warranty will be voided. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS When the amplifier is operating properly, the output power of light with wavelengths in the invisible range (infrared light) may be over 22 dbm (160 mw). To avoid damaging your eyes, please DO NOT look into the output port of the EDFA directly. Do not open the case of the amplifier. Doing so may cause damage to the internal component devices. Opening the case of the amplifier without the permission of Olson Technology, Inc., voids the EDFA warranty. END OF MANUAL PAGE 8 of 8 18 July 2006
