Historically, the book sale has been held at the Gettysburg Middle School, however, due to construction activity, this year s event will be held in the Hauser Field House at Gettysburg College. We are excited about this change in venue and invite everyone to come out and support the Friends summer book sale. All book sale proceeds directly support the Adams County Library System, including all its branches (Biglerville, Fairfield, Gettysburg, Littlestown, New Oxford and East Berlin). Monies raised help to purchase new materials and fund library system programs. The hours for the book sale are 9 a.m. 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 30 th, through Friday, August 1 st, and from 9 a.m. 12 p.m. Saturday, August 2 nd. Book prices are $.50 for small paperbacks, $1.00 -$1.50 for large paperbacks, and $2.00 for all other books. Saturday, August 2 nd is our Bag of Books day, where a grocery bag of books is only $5.00. Additional volunteers are always needed and welcomed, and the summer book sale is a great opportunity to meet other volunteers and learn more about the Friends of the Library. If you are interested in volunteering for the annual summer book sale, please contact Mary Stamm at 717-338- 1948 or by e-mail at mary.stamm@yahoo.net. Friends of the Library Officers and Committee Members Our volunteers, led by book sale manager Marian Benchoff, will constantly replenish tables as the sale progresses, so be sure to re-visit the book sale several times over the four-day period to discover those great finds and super buys. Our volunteers have worked hard to put together this event. From the book processing team at the Gettysburg central book donation point; to volunteers of all ages helping with the set-up; to those serving as cashiers and, to those who box up unsold books and clean up after the sale. This annual event is truly a team effort driven by the spirit of community and volunteerism. There will be free parking directly outside Hauser Field House, as well as at the football stadium just a short distance away. Hauser Field House is at the end of Broadway Avenue, but look for signs when nearing the college campus that point the way to the book sale. The Friends and the Adams County Library System are committed to promoting lifelong learning and literacy. In support of that, on July 31 st and August 1 st, children under the age of Of course, other volunteer opportunities for the Friends of the Library exist all year, such as cashier in the Friends Gettysburg Bookstore, the book processing team at the Gettysburg Library, or helping with the mailing of the Friends newsletter. Library Update By Rob Lesher Library Director Thank You, Friends! and Summer Reading We are currently in the midst of our summer reading program for the library and I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you in the Friends for your contribution of $2500 toward the Summer Reading Program. That sponsorship has allowed the library to purchase a canvas bag for each of the 1000 children who will take part this summer in the program. This will make the program more enjoyable for the kids and will spark some children to participate because of receiving the cool bag which you provided. The Summer Reading Program is the most important program that the library has each year. Hundreds of hours of planning have been dedicated to make sure the programs, which are scheduled in each of the libraries, provide not only an educational opportunity, but also an inspirational opportunity for all school age children. The Summer Reading Program has a very important educational outcome as its core. Each summer, school age children suffer from something called the summer slide. They lose up to two months of their reading level ability and schools must waste months of review time getting the students back to the reading level they achieved before summer vacation. Educational studies have found that if a child reads just 20 hours of self-selected reading material, they can maintain almost their entire reading level. This saves hundreds of thousands of dollars for education for the state of Pennsylvania. If every child in Adams County participated in the summer program, imagine the great strides which would be achieved in students reading levels! So, if you have not already registered your children, or grandchildren for summer reading, you can do that at any library in the county! Some of you may have noticed the relocation of some collections in the Gettysburg Library. The Adult DVDs and Music CDs are now located on the Second Floor and the Teen Collection is now located near the elevator on the First Floor. This was done to move the Teen Collection closer to the Juvenile area to complete our reorganization of the new Youth Services Department. We have reorganized to create a department which will coordinate programming for all of the Youth in the county, birth through 12th grade. This will create a complete arc in our educational programming creating much more efficiency. Although we know it might be a momentary inconvenience to move collections around the library, we really do have a long range plan in mind. Admittedly, more changes will be coming. However, these changes are for the better and will improve your service tenfold. We look forward to seeing you this summer and we hope everyone has an enjoyable and safe warmweather season. Recycle Your Printer Cartridges! You can do your part to help our library! Don t throw away those empty cartridges, please bring them to the library. Place them in the designated boxes located on both floors or give them to the front desk. Sorry, but we are no longer able to recycle cell phones or any type of Kyocera cartridges. Summer Reading Program Underway Teachers and literacy experts agree that children of all ages benefit from reading books over the summer. Summer reading helps maintain reading skills, improves reading fluency, and teaches new vocabulary and concepts. Most importantly, when parents and children enjoy summer reading together, children develop a love of books and reading that lasts a lifetime. The Adams County Library s summer reading program began June 2 and runs 8 weeks through August 2. The program is FREE and open to children and teens from birth through high school. Prizes are awarded for those reading 2 hours a week. Participants may sign up at any of the Adams County Library branches. There is no fee to join, and all those who register receive a reusable tote bag. Participants in the program may read any book of their choice, and those who log a minimum of 2 hours reading each week will earn a prize. Prizes may be claimed by reporting reading hours to the library once a week. The prize for weeks 4 and 8 is a new book! Children are invited to join the program anytime between June 2 and August 2. In addition to the summer reading program, all regularly scheduled story time sessions and other programming continue. The reusable tote bags and book prizes are available from a donation, courtesy of the Friends of the Library. For more information, please call the Children s Dept. at the library at 717.334.5716.
