UWA SCHOOL OF MUSIC Music Tuition Scholarships Fund

Music gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life. Plato 02 NEW CENTURY CAMPAIGN MUSIC

Locally and globally, The University of Western Australia s music students are empowered to change the way people experience the world. As one of the nation s first music schools, established over half a century ago, we are committed to a student experience that inspires creativity and gives flight to imagination. Our commitment At UWA we nurture the emerging artists who will shape the twenty-first century. A key priority is the provision of transformative student experiences our environment is rich in opportunities to educate and inspire all of our students. It is vital to be skilled in as many areas as possible and UWA offers broad skill development through the breadth of courses we provide. UWA s diverse and intensive program includes performance opportunities under the guidance of national and internationally recognised artists. In this way, we offer our emerging artists and composers the opportunity to realise their highest potential. Scholarships are central to providing students with the support they need to grow and advance as musicians. We will attract the best and brightest minds and give young people the opportunity to be the best musicians they can be, regardless of their means. Through the New Century Campaign, we aim to raise $100 million for endowed scholarships and outreach by the end of 2017. Eight million dollars will be dedicated to an endowed fund for music tuition scholarships, awarded to our most talented students. Your support will ensure the global community benefits from a rich musical bounty for generations to come. NEW CENTURY CAMPAIGN MUSIC 03

One-on-one musical tuition guiding creativity At UWA, we provide exceptional opportunities for our students. Each week our Specialist Music Studies scholars enjoy an unparalleled student experience, working with some of the finest musicians in the State through one-on-one music tuition. Focus is placed on specific areas of need and students are able to explore performance tools and options as they discover their own unique style. This is critical to their development and is the cornerstone of a student s creative expansion. The financial cost to students of this pivotal program could be prohibitive. With your help, we will ensure successive generations at UWA are nurtured to become inspiring musicians, touching audiences nationally and internationally. As an undergraduate I once turned pages for a visiting master. I was inspired intellectually and emotionally. I ve taught over one hundred UWA voice students since, and many of them have been similarly inspired. And now they are inspiring others. What a wonderful gift... and what a massive multiplier effect we create through music. Andrew Foote, Head of Voice, UWA School of Music The one-on-one instrumental tuition I ve received at UWA has been the single biggest motivator for me in all the years I ve studied music. Working closely with an expert and a mentor in my instrument has encouraged me to strive for and achieve consistent technical and artistic excellence. Rachael van der Moezel, keyboard student 04 NEW CENTURY CAMPAIGN MUSIC

Our future leading lights Our emerging artists are passionate about their craft, and regularly take advantage of the wealth of opportunities available to them beyond daily study. The School s quality public concerts provide students with invaluable opportunities to perform, and for our budding composers to hear their work performed live. The music performed ranges over 400 years from medieval consort to the latest multimedia pieces, the diversity is extraordinary. Studying at UWA also provides musicians with an entrée into professional positions with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra (WASO) and other professional music organisations. 06 NEW CENTURY CAMPAIGN MUSIC

Partnership with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra WASO recognises the excellence of our music program and has chosen UWA as its sole tertiary education partner. Through the WASO training program, our students are provided amazing opportunities to undertake master classes with international artists and perform with orchestra members. A proposed graduate program will offer a number of students the lifechanging experience of performing regularly with our State s flagship symphony orchestra. World renowned alumni Students at the School of Music are in glorious company. Our alumni are some of the most lauded musical talents in the world and include outstanding performers Dr Sara Macliver, Craig Ogden, Taryn Fiebig, Ashley William Smith and Shaun Lee-Chen; composers of distinction Dr Carl Vine AO, Jennifer Fowler and Iain Grandage; and renowned ethnomusicologist, Dr Stephen Wild. Great universities are wrought from the passions of great people. So it has been at UWA and so it will continue. Professor Paul Johnson, Vice-Chancellor Such a collaboration with the arts in our State is unprecedented. NEW CENTURY CAMPAIGN MUSIC 07

Working with expert musicians is vital to the development of our musicians learning to work with their instrument in new ways inspires creativity. Vital, too, is the chance for our emerging artists to share with you their passion through performance. Dr Alan Lourens, Head of School, Music 08 NEW CENTURY CAMPAIGN MUSIC
