Section R1 (13 marks) Read the following passage and answer all the questions. The Microbead Menace Until about four years ago virtually nobody had even heard of microbeads. Now they have been named as yet another danger to the environment. They are tiny round balls of plastic, less than half a millimetre in diameter, which are added to many beauty products because they help to make skin smooth. They are common in body lotions and face wash, but also in toothpastes and soaps. The harmless beads are so small that they pass through filters and end up in rivers, lakes and the sea. Once there, they can absorb chemicals found in the water, making them poisonous. Unfortunately they are then mistaken by fish for food. Recent tests in the Great Lakes have shown that microbeads have accumulated in such large quantities in certain parts of the lakes that they are the primary reason for the deaths of hundreds of fish. One product can contain up to 360,000 beads. In 2014 in Lake Michigan, the average concentration of plastic microbeads was 43,000 per square kilometre, but the highest recorded was 466,000. The beads have also been linked to the deaths of creatures which feed on fish, like otters and foxes as well as diving birds such as cormorants. The recent research has led to certain US states such as Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin banning the sale of all products containing microbeads. There have also been calls for a ban in Norway and the EU, but until now no action has been taken. Some women s beauty writers have started to question the use of microbeads but most magazines in this sector still urge their readers to use products with high concentrations. Just as effective however, are products with natural ingredients such as cocoa beans or apricot shells. They are not however, as profitable, because of production complications and costs. In response to public concerns, several companies are reducing their use of microbeads. These include Procter and Gamble, the American pharmaceutical giant, and L Oréal. Both stated that they will discontinue the use of microbeads by the end of 2017. Let s hope this isn t too late for the wildlife population of the Great Lakes. For questions 1-3 please answer in complete sentences. (2 marks each) 1. What are microbeads? 2. Why are microbeads used in beauty products? 3. What is a natural alternative to microbeads? Section R2 (7 marks) Read the five short news stories below. Choose from the articles (A to E) and complete the answer grid. The articles may be chosen more than once. One has been done for you as an example. A. Handwriting experts in France have, for years, been employed by top companies to assess the psychological profiles of applicants for jobs, according to their handwriting. In our digital climate, however, fewer young people write anything by hand, so fewer companies now demand a handwritten application. This has led to a reduction in the number of handwriting experts. C. Markers employed by exam companies have definite preferences for handwriting it was revealed today at a conference. Markers want to get on with the job, said Marlene Morgan, the conference organiser, and that job is made easier if what they mark is easy to read. Fancy styles have no place on an exam paper and although markers will always try 100% to understand what a candidate means, clear handwriting is always an advantage, she said. D. Dr Stefan Grozowski from the University of Shoreham has announced the creation of an M.A. in Graphology (the study of handwriting). Dr Grozowski pointed out that while the study of graphology was very advanced in France and the USA, it was an area of academic expertise that was sadly neglected in Britain. The new master s degree will be taught in the English department at Shoreham. Which article, A, B, C, D or E, talks about B. In a recent survey on graphology, doctors were surprisingly not the ones with the worst handwriting. Ten groups of professionals were asked to write the sentence Where do all the swallows go in winter? The results were judged for legibility by a panel of eight year-olds. The children said that computer technicians have the worst handwriting while doctors were the second worst. Nurses came top. E. A French company has organised a course for its British employees so that they can understand French handwriting. Eloise Robicheau, head of HR at Pileoufasse said, We have a number of British workers who all have sufficient language skills.
