The following audition material is for the 2015-2016 Mount Dora High School Jazz Program. This audition will take place on Wednesday, May 27th at Mount Dora HS Band Room from 2:30pm-9:30pm. Please utilize the following information to best prepare for the event. The audition guidelines are as follows. Please look at the specifics for your instrument. Winds (Individual Audition) 1. Perform the written 4 Blues Scales (1 Octave) in a Swing Pattern in under 2 Minutes: F, Bb, Eb, Ab, (Concert) 2. Perform Audition Excerpt from Take Five by Paul Desmond (As Written) 3. Sight Read (30 Second Preparation Time Period) 4. Performers interested in LEAD TRUMPET or BASS TROMBONE should also perform the excerpts written. Rhythm Section (Group Audition) This unique setting will enable our adjudication panel the opportunity to work with the entire group of auditioning students to determine which set up of performers will best work together during. This portion of the audition will be at the end of the audition block to enable each performer the ability to be present in the group setting. Each portion of the audition will work in the following manner: 1. Random selection of one auditioning member for each rhythm section instrument: Guitar, Piano, Bass, Drums, Auxiliary Percussion/Vibes. 2. Interchange performers between repetitions to allow for multiple rhythm section layout possibilities. 3. Perform F Blues (Swing) to determine ability and adaptability of each performer. Change Style between Rock and Latin as well on the same F Blues chord changes. 4. Perform audition excerpt to determine preparedness of each player and non-verbal communication skills in the rhythm section setting. Interchange as needed. 5. Sight Read selected excerpts from substantial Jazz Literature as a rhythm section. Interchanging will take place as needed. Piano Auditions Use the top stave for the melody (right hand) and use the bottom stave for the accompaniment (left hand). Feel free to change octaves and/or voicings as you like. Piano, Guitar, and Bass Auditions Use the written notes and chord changes as a guide to personalize the parts. Be prepared to play the written portion as well as any embellishments that you may have added to create more musicianship within the part. The part is merely a road map. Drum Set Auditions Be prepared to perform the following styles (with fills at appropriate times; 4 bars, 8 bars, etc.) by yourself during the group setting: Swing, Rock, Latin. Upon request, be able to show versatility by effectively switching between styles in the same performance excerpt.
