American soprano Jessye Norman receives the Royal Philharmonic Society Gold Medal in the year she celebrates 50 years in the music profession. The Society s and one of classical music s - highest honours awarded to a towering artist: an icon in the operatic world who has raised the bar of the possibilities of the human voice. Highlights from the RPS Music Awards will be broadcast on BBC Radio 3 at 19.30hrs on Monday 14 May. Sir Nicholas Serota, Chairman of the Arts Council England, gives the keynote speech, discussing diversity in the arts: We are falling short in representing society in our workforce, and in bringing through the leaders of the future. enormous progress has been made in broadening our audiences, but in the field of arts and culture we need to admit that we still face shared challenges around diversity if we are to fulfil our wish that the arts should play an important part in the lives of everyone in this country". John Gilhooly, Chairman of the Royal Philharmonic Society, speaking at the Awards said: Access to the arts and culture is access to our national life, and the universal right of every citizen. Tragically, those denied access to the arts can feel locked out and left behind.

The RPS Music Awards winners have been announced in London. The awards, presented in association with BBC Radio 3, are the most prestigious recognition for live classical music in the UK, and this year celebrate outstanding achievement in 2017. The list of winners, chosen by independent juries from across the music profession, shows the extraordinary variety of outstanding music making in the UK, from internationally acclaimed conductors and soloists to a people s opera for thousands in Yorkshire and an East End song crawl. Allan Clayton won the RPS Music Award for Singer, with the jury citing both his astonishing range and the excellence of his singing. 2017 included his unforgettable Hamlet in the title role of Brett Dean s opera Hamlet at Glyndebourne Festival Opera and performances as David in Wagner s Der Meistersinger von Nürnberg at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, in Gerald Barry s Canada at the BBC Proms and in recitals and concerts. Hamlet conductor, Vladimir Jurowski, Principal Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, won the RPS Music Award for Conductor for innovative and adventurous programming in 2017 that ensured every concert was an event that no one wanted to miss, with the jury noting that he has had a profound and consistent impact on the musical life of London during his 10 years as Principal Conductor of the orchestra. It is the second time he has won the award (his first RPS Music Award was in 2005). Igor Levit won the RPS Music Award for Instrumentalist, celebrated by the jury as an artist who never takes the easy option, who is not afraid to challenge audiences and who is fully engaged in the world and for the breathtaking scale, quality and conviction of his work. This is a second RPS Music Award for Levit, who took the Young Artists prize in 2013. 26-year-old Scottish guitarist Sean Shibe won this year s coveted RPS Music Award for Young Artists, an award that has been a springboard for some of the most exciting talent of the past two decades. Shibe, the jury stated, exemplifies the criteria of the Royal Philharmonic Society Awards in his approach to creativity, excellence and understanding by extending boundaries and challenging pre-conceptions of the guitar in solo and collaborative performance; his artistry and dedication are compelling. Composer James Dillon won the RPS Music Award for Chamber-Scale Composition, his fourth composition award (awarded twenty years after he won his first), making him one of the most decorated musicians in RPS Music Awards history. Dillon s ground-breaking Tanz/haus Tryptich 2017, premiered by the Red Note Ensemble at the 2017 Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, immerses its audience in a music theatre of the mind. Compelling for the sureness of its unfolding in time and space, the striking soundworlds and its rich underlying vein of melancholy. Composer Mark-Anthony Turnage won the RPS Music Award for Large-Scale Composition for Hibiki, for solo voices, orchestra and children s choir, which received its UK premiere at the BBC Proms 2017. The multiple meanings of the word Hibiki beautiful sound/resonance/echo are reflected in Turnage s work which was envisaged as a consolation after loss and commissioned as a Requiem for the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan and to celebrate the 30 th anniversary of Tokyo s Suntory Hall. The jury commented that Turnage demonstrates an eloquent and mature handling of a culturally and politically sensitive commission. It is

serious music of great depth and emotional resonance, skillfully woven with Japanese elements, from a master craftsman at the height of his powers. British composers and new music were also placed at the heart of the London Symphony Orchestra s This is Rattle, a wide-ranging celebratory series which marked the arrival of the orchestra s new Music Director, Simon Rattle. This is Rattle won the RPS Music Award for Concert Series and Festivals, with the jury commenting that it crackled with the joy and energy of a new beginning it fired the starting pistol for a fresh artistic trajectory of thrilling breadth and ambition. In a strong year for vocal music, including the awarding of the RPS Gold Medal to legendary American soprano Jessye Norman (see separate section below for full details), leading UK choral ensemble The Sixteen took the RPS Music Award for Ensemble, for an astonishing year which saw them perform to thousands across the UK and the world, release nine superb CDs and continue to nurture the next generation of outstanding singers. In everything, the jury commented, their passion shines through. The RPS Music Award for Opera and Music Theatre was won by The Monteverdi Choir and Orchestras for Monteverdi 450 Trilogy, an ambitious exploration of Monteverdi s operas in the composer s 450th anniversary year, conducted by Sir John Eliot Gardiner: 38 performances worldwide combined scholarship, preparation, dedication, immersive ensemble and, above all musical and dramatic revelation. Spitalfields Music s quirky and creative song-crawl Schumann Street, which won the RPS Music Award for Chamber Music and Song, took its audience through the historic Huguenot houses of East London, to discover, at random, vocalists from many musical traditions and genres, including soul, folk, hiphop and Bengal song as well as classical, each re-imagining one song from Schumann s Dichterliebe. The event, the jury commented demonstrated the visceral power of storytelling through the medium of song. The great Lieder singer, Thomas Quasthoff, and BBC Studios for BBC4 won the RPS Music Award for Creative Communication for the superb documentary Becoming a Lied Singer: Thomas Quasthoff and the Art of German Song. Filmed during Quasthoff s Das Lied competition in Heidelberg and in his classes with young singers, Quasthoff is an eloquent and expert guide to this most engaging of artforms. Commissioned and created by 509 Arts, Calderland A People s Opera, which won the RPS Music Award for Learning and Participation, was described by the jury as the kind of artistic experience that changes lives. The work, with a compelling narrative and sophisticated musical language celebrated the resilience, recovery and reinvention of Yorkshire s Calder Valley community following the devastating floods of 2015, and involved thousands of participants in workshops, rehearsals and performance. There was also a second success for Yorkshire: Classically Yours, which brought high quality live orchestral music to isolated coastal and rural areas in East Riding won the RPS Music Award for Audiences and Engagement. Produced by Orchestras Live in partnership with the East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Classically Yours set out to engage new audiences by addressing inequalities of opportunity and transforming the belief in isolated communities that culture happens elsewhere. Part of the council s contribution to Hull UK City of Culture 2017, Classically Yours involved an impressive range of local and artistic partners, including Sinfonia Viva, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and two former RPS

Music Award-winning ensembles, Manchester Camerata and Britten Sinfonia, in concerts, participatory projects and workshops reaching over 2,000 people. John Gilhooly, Chairman of the Royal Philharmonic Society comments: The RPS Music Awards offer a very rare focus on what is really happening in classical music, right across the country. There s much to celebrate. This is music for everyone, often years in the making; music that provides a lasting emotional impact and can change lives. The Royal Philharmonic Society wants more people to enjoy, listen and take part in music, and for nascent musicians and composers to reach their full potential. This won't happen by magic. I urge funders and supporters to continue to back the musicians and organisations that make the UK music scene the envy of the world and say to audiences and participants old and new: enjoy and experience live music. HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE RPS MUSIC AWARDS WILL BE BROADCAST ON BBC RADIO 3 AT 19.30HRS ON MONDAY 14 MAY. Alan Davey, Controller BBC Radio 3, Proms, BBC Orchestras and Choirs comments: The BBC shares The Royal Philharmonic Society s desire to ensure arts and music reach as many people as possible and that s why, at BBC Radio 3, we re so pleased to be able to bring classical music and culture to millions of people, including highlights of tonight s awards. RPS MUSIC AWARDS PRESENTATION The RPS Music Awards are presented in association with BBC Radio 3 and were held at The Brewery in the City of London. The awards were hosted by BBC Radio 3 presenters Georgia Mann and Petroc Trelawny, with the silver lyre trophies presented to winners by Judith Weir, Master of the Queen s Music. JESSYE NORMAN AWARDED ROYAL PHILHARMONIC SOCIETY GOLD MEDAL It was announced at the RPS Music Awards that American soprano, Jessye Norman, in the year she celebrates 50 years since her professional debut, has been awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society Gold Medal one of classical music s highest honours. Jessye Norman becomes the 105 th recipient since the medal was founded in 1870 in celebration of the centenary of the birth of Beethoven (London s Philharmonic Society commissioned Beethoven s Ninth Symphony and enjoyed a close association with the composer). The medal has a special resonance, given by musicians as a mark of admiration and esteem to a fellow musician of exceptional artistry and profound musical understanding. Jessye Norman joins an outstanding international list of current and previous recipients an extraordinary roll call of some of the world s most influential musicians, from across three centuries. Current Gold Medallists include singers Dame Janet Baker, Placido Domingo, Thomas Quasthoff and Sir John Tomlinson. In awarding the medal the Royal Philharmonic Society said: Jessye Norman is a towering artist: an icon in the operatic world who has raised the bar of the possibilities of the human voice. Her rich lyric voice - distinctive, sumptuous, spine-tingling, joyful and passionate - and her sheer versatility set her in a category of her own. Born into a close-knit family, she emerged from the challenges of her African-American roots in Georgia in the deep south making her mark across Europe, resulting in triumphs at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Covent Garden and La Scala in the 1970s, before earning worldwide acclaim. She is also an artist with a social conscience, believing that if you re participating in life and politics, it makes you a fuller person and a fuller artist. She speaks out publicly to deplore casual racism and to defend civil rights. In 2003, she helped create and fund a tuition-free performing arts after-school programme for economically disadvantaged students in Augusta, Georgia; while in 2009 she directed a major festival for New York's Carnegie Hall saluting African-American culture. The RPS is proud to honour her and to celebrate her extraordinary 50 years in the music profession. Jessye Norman was presented with the RPS Gold Medal in New York by Clive Gillinson, Executive and Artistic Director of Carnegie Hall. In an acceptance film, she commented: What a thought. Musicians: the movers and shakers of our world. This is not as farfetched as you might think. Look at the world as we find it today: would we find our planet inhabitable without the richness and sounds in a Mozart sonata, the melodies of a Brahms Symphony that simply carries us through the day, the harmony of a Schubert song, the music of Elgar, Birtwistle, that piece that we heard on the radio just the other day that was only composed a month ago? All this sustains us; the adventures of the new, the comfort of the long-loved music [As] Aldous Huxley said: After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music. Music education is an essential part of the nourishment that we should offer our children. Educators tell us that regardless of their socio economic [background], a student whose education includes a study in the arts performs better in all other studies having learnt through the experience of making something, whether a painting, a song, conquering

the C-sharp scale on the piano; that practice and repetition makes for a better outcome... They find within themselves that voice that might otherwise remain unheard. They listen to their own inner voices and we hope that this makes it easier for them to hear the voices around them with more ease, tolerance, understanding, acceptance, making for fuller, more responsible citizens. Can the arts afford us all of this? Oh yes it can! Oh yes it does! STRICTLY EMBARGOED UNTIL 22.30HRS ON WEDNESDAY 9 MAY 2018 RPS MUSIC AWARDS 2018 CITATIONS in association with BBC Radio 3 Category Winner Jury Citation Audiences and Engagement Classically Yours (Orchestras Live in partnership with East Riding of Yorkshire Council) Relaxed Prom (BBC Proms) New Music Biennial 2017 (PRS Foundation) Magic Butterfly (Welsh National Opera and REWIND VR) Classically Yours set out to engage people with high quality live orchestral music: young people; families; older people; people with disabilities; and voluntary music-making groups living in isolated coastal and rural areas, This project stood out for its clear aims and aspirations, impressive range of local and artistic partnerships, links between participation and concert activities, careful marketing, and its meticulous evaluation. Chamber Music and Song Schumann Street (Spitalfields Music) BBC Radio 3 Lunchtime Concerts Scottish Ensemble Schumann Street was a quirky and creative song-crawl, through the historic Huguenot houses of Spitalfields. The audience discovered, at random, vocalists from many musical traditions and genres, each re-imagining one song from Schumann s Dichterliebe. Together they reminded us of the enduring themes and relevance of that work, and demonstrated the visceral power of storytelling through the medium of song. Chamber-Scale Composition sponsored by Boosey and Hawkes in memory of Tony Fell James Dillon: Tanz/haus Triptych 2017 Oliver Knussen: O Hototogisu! fragment of a Japonisme Silvina Milstein: Shan Shui Once again this composer breaks new ground with a work which immerses its audience in a music theatre of the mind. It is compelling for the sureness of its unfolding in time and space; the striking soundworlds conjured from its nine-piece ensemble, and its rich underlying vein of melancholy. The winner of the RPS chamber-scale composition award is Tanz/haus Triptych 2017 by James Dillon.

Concert Series and Festivals sponsored by Schott Music This is Rattle (LSO) R17 - Russia! Culture! Revolution! Centenary Season in Wales (RWCMD) #ConcertLab (Southbank Sinfonia) Crackling with the joy and energy of a new beginning, this wide-ranging celebratory series placed British composers and new music at its heart. This is Rattle featured the London Symphony Orchestra and its new music director on electric form, and fired the starting pistol for a fresh artistic trajectory of thrilling breadth and ambition. Conductor sponsored by BBC Music Magazine Vladimir Jurowski Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla Antonio Pappano The winner s innovative and adventurous programming in 2017 ranged from Rebel and Tallis, to Penderecki and Silvestrov, ensuring that every concert was an event that no one wanted to miss. 2017 also saw his triumphant return to Glyndebourne with the world premiere of Brett Dean's masterful Hamlet - one of the absolute highlights of the year. Vladimir Jurowski has made a profound and consistent impact on our musical lives during his 10 years as Principal Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Creative Communication Becoming a Lied Singer: Thomas Quasthoff and the Art of German Song (BBC Studios for BBC 4) Min Kym: Gone: A Girl, a Violin, a Life Unstrung (Penguin / Viking) Opera: Power, Passion and Politics (V&A and the Royal Opera House) Thomas Quasthoff, a great Lieder singer, is an eloquent and expert guide to this most engaging art-form. Filmed during his Das Lied competition in Heidelberg and in his classes, we glimpse the passion and enthusiasm of a group of young singers as they explore German song. The winner is the BBC s superb documentary, Becoming a Lied Singer. Ensemble The Sixteen BBC Symphony Orchestra Dunedin Consort The winners have toured across the UK and the world, delighting thousands of music lovers (and somehow they also found time to release nine superb CDs including the premiere recording of James MacMillan's Stabat Mater.) And they continue to nurture tomorrow's generation of outstanding singers through their pioneering training programme. Whether singing Pärt or Purcell, Poulenc or Palestrina, their passion for everything they perform shines through. Even by their own remarkable standards Harry Christophers and The Sixteen have had an astonishing year.

Instrumentalist Igor Levit Isabelle Faust Sean Shibe The scale, quality and conviction of this musician s work over the last year has been breath-taking. He has brought the same depth of musical and intellectual engagement to every concert - whether concluding a cycle of Beethoven sonatas at London's Wigmore Hall; performing the complete Shostakovich Preludes and Fugues at Birmingham Town Hall; or opening the BBC Proms, This is an artist who never takes the easy option, who is not afraid to challenge audiences and who is fully engaged in the world. The 2018 Instrumentalist Award goes to Igor Levit. Large-Scale Composition donated by the Boltini Trust Mark-Anthony Turnage: Hibiki Brett Dean: Hamlet Raymond Yiu: The World Was Once All Miracle The winning work for solo voices, children's choir and orchestra, offers consolation to Japan after war, earthquake and tsunami. It demonstrates an eloquent and mature handling of a culturally and politically sensitive commission. This is serious music of great depth and emotional resonance, skilfully woven with Japanese elements, from a master craftsman at the height of his powers. The winner is Hibiki by Mark-Anthony Turnage. Learning and Participation Calderland - A People's Opera (509 Arts) Newport Legends (Operasonic) BambinO; Memory Spinners (Scottish Opera) Commissioned and created by 509 Arts, Calderland was an ambitious community opera by composer Richard Taylor, librettist Mike Kenny and director Alan Dix who worked with the people of Calder Valley and with a committed group of partners. The judges were particularly struck by the inclusive nature of the workshop and rehearsal process leading to performance, and by the clear evidence that the project has created an energetic musical legacy. Calderland celebrates the resilience, recovery and reinvention of this community following the devastating floods of 2015. With a compelling narrative and sophisticated musical language, this is the kind of artistic experience that changes lives. Opera and Music Theatre donated by Sir Simon and Victoria, Lady Robey OBE Monteverdi 450 Trilogy (the Monteverdi Choir and Orchestras) Brett Dean s Hamlet (Glyndebourne Opera and Tour) Pelléas et Mélisande (Scottish 38 performances worldwide combined scholarship, preparation, dedication, immersive ensemble and, above all musical and dramatic revelation. In a year of exceptional quality, the award goes to an ambitious exploration of Monteverdi s operas in the composer s 450th anniversary year. The winner is the Monteverdi Choir and Orchestras

Opera) and John Eliot Gardiner. Singer donated by Lalita Carlton-Jones Allan Clayton David Butt Philip Brindley Sherratt One singer particularly commanded attention, both for the astonishing range and the excellence of his singing. Outstanding were his performances as David in Meistersinger at Covent Garden, in Gerald Barry s Canada at the Proms, his fine work in concert and recital, and his unforgettable Hamlet in Brett Dean's opera at Glyndebourne. An exceptional year for an artist who rose to every challenge. The Award goes to Allan Clayton. Young Artists sponsored by PRS for Music Sean Shibe Louise Alder Elim Chan From Penzance to Ullapool; from Dowland; to David Lang, this artist has excelled in communicating the range and versatility of his instrument: - one that often lacks exposure in venues around the UK. The winner exemplifies the values of the Royal Philharmonic Society Awards. He extends boundaries and challenges pre-conceptions of the guitar in solo and collaborative performance. The artistry and dedication of Sean Shibe are compelling. Gold Medal Jessye Norman Jessye Norman is a towering artist: an icon in the operatic world who has raised the bar of the possibilities of the human voice.
