rogram Notes ides o eace as commissioned by ainbridge Chorale on ainbridge Isl in Washington te s uget ound he ork is dediced to community choirs around the orld th share ainbridge Chorale s mission to enrich insire singers, audiences, communities through the transcendent oer o choral music During the beginning o the roect, I met several times ith ainbridge Chorale s Music Director, Michael Miller, to discuss the goals the he the Chorale had in mind or the commission his hase o commissioning roects is truly one o my avorites It is the oint hich the ininite ossibilities o an otherise blank canvas are creively constrained to rovide a rameork ocus or h eventually emerges as a musical ork During our meetings, Michael had some very clear descritors themes th he anted the iece to evoke, including Community, eace, nity, Love o inging, the concet o ongs rom the Heart nd o course there are the obvious themes th go along ith the notion o being loced on an isl in uget ound: er, aves,, currents, loing, the sea, the shore With ainbridge Chorale s mission stement, Michael s themes, the hysical image o ainbridge Isl itsel set in the beauty o uget ound, I began one o my other avorite hases o comosing: inding the right text ter looking dozens o ossibilities, ranging rom oems about music by oets such as Robert Herrick Walter de la Mare to sacred texts including I Corinthians 13, he eitudes, salm 133 ( Ho good leasant it is to dell together in unity ), I decided to try setting the oening lines rom salm 133, hich I thought cured beautiully the themes o unity, community, eace exressed by Michael during our initial meetings ter orking it reorking it, I elt like I as sinning my heels; the iece ust asn t moving in the right direction, so I stoed comosing returned to my quest or a text Not long into my reneed search, I stumbled onto an extended cycle o oems by the merican oet Henry van Dyke (185 1933) titled Music When I read ea hore, the tenth inal oem in the cycle, I kne I had ound the right text! I as overcome ith the beauty o the images in the oem, the ay in hich it cured every asect o h e ere looking or in a text as remarkable, rom the mission stement, to the various themes Michael had shared ith me, to the images o ainbridge Isl itsel! Not anting to bias the chorale s conductor, I resented him ith a variety o texts, including both the sacred sources several o the secular oems about music ter he read van Dyke s ea hore, he too lent his strongest vote to th oem elt th it as the right one I as delighted th he elt the same ay as I did about the remarkable arorieness o the text or the commission eore starting to comose the musical setting, I nearly alays choose a title irst, because the central image o the title ill requently guide the musical setting itsel I already kne th I did not ant to use the original title o the oem ea hore hich is not a articularly oetic title hich I ound both too rosaic too geograhical ter trying a dozen or so titles on or size, I inally settled on ides o eace the inal three ords rom the end o the irst stanza o the oem I as griied th Michael agreed holeheartedly hen I shared it ith him ter my customary indeth analysis o the oem, I began sketching some initial musical ideas, the iece took o like a shot out o a cannon, taking me only a coule o days to inish most o the musical setting I ind van Dyke s oem deely insirional, I hoe th the musical setting cures the beauty, deth, see o the oem, as ell as the goals set orth by ainbridge Chorale Most o all, I hoe this ork is both uniquely suited to ainbridge Chorale one th they can truly call their on th it ill also hel to ulill ainbridge Chorale s mission to enrich insire singers, audiences, communities through the transcendent oer o choral music
