BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE The Kilbourne family resided in Clinton, Louisiana, at their residence Bonnie Burn. James Gilliam Kilbourne, planter, jurist, Louisiana legislator, and Confederate captain, was born in Hinds County, Mississippi, moved to East Feliciana Parish in 1838, attended Centenary College in Jackson, Louisiana, and married Almena Leonora Perkins in 1851. They had ten children: Mary Octavia (1852-1881), James (1854-1924), Charles (1856-1937), Henry Gilliam (1858-1888), Lewis Perkins (1860-1912), Emma (b.1862), Susan Gilliam (1864-1913), Lillian (1868-1949), Almena Fuqua (1870-1961), and Margaret Gayden (1873-1949). James became a doctor, Charles a teacher, newspaper editor, and jurist, Lewis a pharmacist, and Mary a teacher. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE Collection consists of letters, newspaper clippings, writings, bills, receipts, and various other documents. Letters to Almena Kilbourne from her children relate local and family news. Newspaper clippings of family members' accomplishments and deaths, poems, musical compositions, and short stories by Margaret G. K. Breedlove, and items relating to the succession of Peter Gilliam, are included. Commencement addresses given by J.G. Kilbourne at Silliman Female Institute, Clinton, and Millwood Institute, Jackson, Louisiana, and a bibliography of the Kilbourne library are also included. Page 4 of 7

COLLECTION DESCRIPTION The collection consists of papers pertaining to the succession of Peter Gilliam, Lincoln County, Georgia, a copy of his will, and oaths of witnesses to his signature (1817); commencement addresses delivered by James G. Kilbourne at Silliman Institute, Clinton, East Feliciana Parish, (1869, 1879) and at Millwood Institute, Jackson, East Feliciana Parish (1880); bills of purchase in New Orleans (1873); blank forms for pension claims for widows of veterans of the War of 1812 (ca. 1878); and a broadside for commencement exercises of Millwood Institute (1880). Also included is a funeral notice of Mary Octavia Morehead (1881); pharmacy certificate of Lewis Perkins Kilbourne (1881); the death notice of Harry G. Kilbourne (1888); and letters to Mrs. James G. Kilbourne from her children: Harry at Oak Ridge; Lewis, pharmacist at Bayou Sara; Charles at Clinton; Margaret Breedlove at Clinton; Lillian at Clinton; Susan Petrie at Berwick; Almina at Turnbull, Miss.; and her granddaughter, Lucie, all dealing with family matters (1888-1903). A report of a committee of the Louisiana General Assembly on proposed amendments to the constitution (Charles Kilbourne was a member appointed from the House of Representatives and served a secretary) is also found in the collection (1894). Other items include a letter to Charles [Breedlove] from Katherine concerning personal matters (1917); the teacher s certificate of Margaret Gayden Kilbourne Breedlove (1928); a letter to Judge Charles Kilbourne from Katherine Kilbourne concerning biography (1936); a bibliography of the Kilbourne library ante-dating 1866 (prepared in 1937); and a music manuscript of a march, Louisiana, composed by Margaret Breedlove (undated). A number of writings, such as copies of verse and a short story by Margaret Kilbourne Breedlove (undated); poems, addresses, and stories probably written by James G. Kilbourne (ca. 1890, undated); extracts copied from the works of various poets; and newspaper clippings of verse (undated) are also included. Photographs include portraits of Judge James G. Kilbourne; his wife; an unidentified Confederate soldier; and an African American couple named Mammy Clay and Henry Clay (undated). Other items are comprised of calling and announcement cards (undated); and newspaper clippings of an article written by Judge J.G. Kilbourne in 1848 about the fall of Poland and reprinted in 1939; the St. Francisville True Democrat (March 19, 1904) containing an editorial on the death of Mrs. A.L. Kilbourne; and an article from the Baton Rouge, La. Weekly Truth concerning Charles Kilbourne becoming editor of the Clinton Patriot-Democrat (1885). Finally, two printed volumes are included: Houghtaling s Handbook of Useful Information, (Albany, N.Y. Charles E. Houghtaling, Publisher, 1884). Message of His Excellency Gov. Francis D.
