ACCESS: COPYRIGHT: PROCESSED BY: The papers are open for research. Copyright has not been transferred to California State University, Fresno. Provenance These papers were given by Ruth Lercher Bornstein to the Arne Nixon Center for the Study of Children s Literature in June 2013. Restrictions Collection is non-circulating; in-house research use only. Copyright The collection is protected by the Copyright Law of the United States (Title 17, U. S. Code). It is the user's responsibility to verify copyright ownership and to obtain all necessary permissions prior to the reproduction, publication, or other use of any portion of these materials, other than that noted above. Biographical Sketch Ruth Lercher Bornstein was born April 28, 1927 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She moved to New London, Wisconsin when she was ten. She loved to draw as a child and was called the class artist in junior high and high school where she would create illustrations for the school newspaper and yearbook. In 1948, Bornstein received a Bachelor s of Science in Art Education at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. There she also began to take an interest in poetry and writing. After graduating, she moved to New York City for a year where she taught art classes for children at a Settlement House and also studied at the Art Students League. After trips to Israel and Paris, she met and married her husband Harry Bornstein. Together, the couple attended Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. Soon after she gave birth to her daughter, Noa, and later her three sons, Jonah, Adam, and Jesse. The family moved to the Los Angeles area where she discovered her interest for children s books while reading to her own children. While Bornstein did not think she would ever create her own book, she found herself making whimsical pictures of little green elephants and rabbits peeking out of holes. She was also intrigued by the wonders of the life cycle happening within her own garden. She began to write simple words and soon started making these words and pictures into books. Her first book, Indian Bunny, was published in 1973. Ruth Lercher Bornstein has published numerous picture books, including her well-known book, Little Gorilla. She has also displayed her artwork at many exhibits in such venues as Comara Gallery, Los Angeles; Rose Cafe, Venice; Santa Monica Main Library; Storyopolis, Los Angeles; Jewish Community Center, San Francisco, to name a few. She received the Southern California Council for Literature for Children and Young People Award twice. She also taught classes about creating picture books at U.C.L.A. Extension and also at U.S.C. Isomata. Sources Ruth Bornstein s website: http://www.ruthlercherbornstein.com Something About the Author: volume 14 pages 44-45. Scope and Content Ruth Bornstein Papers, ANC0037, page 2
