Lovereading4kids Reader reviews of Stop Those Monsters! By Steve Cole Below are the complete reviews, written by Lovereading4kids members. Sam Harper, age 11 When Bob s house is housenapped and he is transported to Terra Monstra, or monsterland to us, he s a bit worried. In fact he is exactly 32% afraid, 36% excited and 32% full of wonder. He s infatuated with percentages! All of the monsters he meets there run away screaming, afraid that he ll fire toxic waste out of his nose. All except one that is, a giant hamster in a toga called Verity. She s interested in humanology, the study of humans, and she finds Bob fascinating. But Bob just wants his house back and Verity s uncle, the professor, and some of their monster pals may be able to help. They have to journey to the lowest level of Terra Monstra where the nastiest monsters live. They need to use clever words to get past the guardian and reach Bob s house and the Humamon Star Jewel which will allow him to wish his house back to earth. Bob and his new friends do eventually work out why he arrived in Terra Monstra but will they be able to get him home again? This was a really good adventure which was also very funny. I loved gorgon Zola, the failed gorgon, who was only able to turn people into weird stuff for a few minutes, Alfie the comedian and Verity who had such trouble pronouncing Bob properly. Steve Cole is a brilliant author and Stop Those Monsters is his best book yet. It was 39% exciting, 42% amazing and 19% absolutely hilarious. I 100% loved it!
Beth Urquhart, age 8 This is a very funny adventure story, it has a lot of humour in it. I like the point of view it is written from (sort of first person but with other people adding in). The Characters were very easy to imagine and you imagine them in your own way as well as looking at the pictures. I liked the pictures, they were interesting and I think boys would like them. I think both boys and girls who are not too girly would like this book. My favourite bit is when Zola turned Kilgrotty into bacon! My favourite character was Alfie because he is funny even though he is monster and he is not very good at fighting. Tomasz Hawryszczuk, age 10 Brilliant book. Really funny. Not like anything I have read before. Imagine a world full of monsters and you as the only human. Highly recommend this book to anyone over the age of 8. Such a funny book. Well written with fantastic illustrations which really made the book come to life. This is a story about a boy called Bob who encounters monsters of every shape and size as he enters another world due to a freaky incident with his house. He has three friends with him but they are just as weird as the monsters. My favourite character was Verity. You will have to read the book to find out why Verity was so funny! Maybe it was the way she looked? I recommend this to boys and girls over the age of 8. Emma Baird, age 12 This book is about Bob, a human boy, lost in a land of monsters! His only way to return home is to go on a quest to find the humamon star jewel... Bob is joined on his quest by three other monsters, verity the giant toga wearing hamster, Alfie the not-so scary dinosaur and Zola the artistic gorgon. And together they travel through the levels of terra-monstra (monster land) to find the jewel. This book is quite an easy book but full of humour and exciting adventures with the jokes and sound effects causing you to laugh out loud at the fun. I would definitely recommend this book to boys and girls of 8 or 9 years and over.
Georgina Loring, age 10 Tockington Manor School Bob Bee is a boy who loves monsters, and after a strange array of events he finds himself in TERRA MONSTRA. Dun, dun, dun! He goes on a quest with a mutant hamster called Verity, a Gorgon artist called Zola and a soft hearted Dino beast called Alfie. Whilst being temporarily stopped by Killgrotty and his greenies and numerous other defenders they try to complete their quest but all they can hear is STOP THOSE MONSTERS On Bob s quest to get home they meet Verity s uncle who s a humanologist and tells them all the information they need for the quest. I love this book and I think it s one of the best books I ve ever read! You would probably like this book if you like quests, action and of course monsters! My favourite character is Zola because she is funny and bubbly and can t turn things into stone (instead she can turn them into weird stuff like porridge ). It is quite a hard read, only because it is quite long, but get reading it NOW! Alex Hall, age 9 I couldn't put this book down, it is great. It has lots of descriptive words so I could really imagine what the characters were like. I like the way it seems like the monsters and the human boy Bob are doomed and then suddenly Oliver Knight, age 11 Blenheim Primary School The illustration on the front page is a bit plain and I think it needs enhancing. Also I think that the picture gives the reader an open mind about the book. I would recommend this book to the ages 7-10. The way the book is written is for the purpose to make the reader wake up a little and make them laugh when say a word is written in bold.
Dylan Yallop, age 11 Blenheim Primary School I recommend this book for ages 8 under because there is monsters and it could be an adventure. A boy named Bob is stuck in land of monsters and he's trying to get out with the help of 3 monsters. I didn t like this book as it isn't exciting also I like comedy and it didn't have a lot. I would give this book 3/10. Isaac East, age 9 This book is about a boy who disappears underground and discovers a world bursting with monsters. At first he is really scared but then he realises that some of the monsters are nice. Bob is desperate to get home and asks one of the nice monsters to help him get home. Verity explains he needs to find the star jewel at the 8th layer of monster world so he can get back home. I thought the book was really funny at times because of what the characters got up to through the story. Some parts were a little bit scary but mostly it was funny. I would recommend this book to boys who like reading about monsters. I hope Steve Cole makes another book about Bob and his friends. Elliot Tredant A very funny and silly story for kids of all ages. A funny story for kids of all ages about a boy called Bob who lands in a world of monsters after his house is sucked into a whirlwind! He then has lots of silly and ridiculous adventures and meets many strange and wonderful friends along the way, whilst he is trying to get back to Earth. Melissa Broomfield The monster ideas are funny with their unusual powers such as being able to turn someone into porridge definitely a different take on the normal monster powers. I like stop those monsters because it s well written and there are funny pictures
in it. This isn t the sort of book I would usually read as i don t like comics and it is a bit like a comic in the way it looks, but it was easy to get into and was enjoyable form the start. Rating: 7/10
