Financial Aid (see back f this sheet)

Financial Aid Infrmatin fr Incming and/r Prspective Music Majrs Yu will find it helpful t think f financial aid in tw categries. The first categry is general financial aid available thrugh the Financial Aid Office f the University; the secnd categry is financial aid available thrugh the Department f Music. Financial Aid Available frm the University The University has a large amunt f financial aid available. Sme f this is nt need-based, but mst f it is. T qualify fr need-based financial aid, a student and his r her parents must fill ut a FAFSA. This frm is available nline at www.fafsa.ed.gv. After a student is admitted t UNH, the University s Financial Aid Office will develp an aid package which will ften invlve schlarship aid, wrk study, and lans. In calculating need, the university uses an estimate f the student s ttal expenses fr the year, nt simply tuitin expenses. It is therefre pssible t receive bth a full-tuitin waiver frm the music department and ther university need-based financial aid. We strngly recmmend that all students fill ut a FAFSA as early as Octber 1, 2018 but n later than March 1, 2019. Schlarships Available frm the Department f Music The Department f Music has available a number f tuitin schlarships ranging dwnward in amunt frm the maximum award f a full tuitin waiver fr fur years t minimum awards f a thusand dllars. These schlarships are talent-based, nt need-based: that is, the student s financial cnditin is nt cnsidered in the awarding f these schlarships. Department f Music tuitin waivers are given t utstanding musicians with a high recrd f academic achievement. The department als takes int accunt the student s instrument r vcal type and the department s needs in that area. The department cnsiders students fr schlarship nly after they have auditined fr the department and have applied t and been accepted by the University Admissins Office. There is n auditin prcedure fr a schlarship award ther than the nrmal pre-admissin auditin taken by all incming music majrs. The decisin t award a particular music department schlarship is made by the department s Schlarship Cmmittee in cnsultatin with the Chair f the Department. Fr students frm the Greater Manchester, NH area (i.e. Manchester, Amherst, Auburn, Bedfrd, Candia, Derry, Gffstwn, Hksett, Litchfield, Lndnderry, and Merrimack), there are schlarship funds available frm the Smyth Trust f Manchester, NH. Their ffice hurs are Thursdays, frm 9:00 a.m. t 12:00 nn, the phne number is 603-623-3420, and they are n the web at www.smythtrust.cm. We expect yu t apply t the Smyth Trust if yu apply fr UNH music schlarship mney. Nt all cllege expenses are cvered even in a full tuitin waiver. Examples f expenses nt cvered wuld be university fees, applied music fees, bks and class supplies, rm and bard, and transprtatin. Yur music schlarship may affect yur ttal financial aid package. In general, yu may find that a music schlarship reduces yur need based aid (guaranteed lans and wrk-study). Yu will nt generally find that a music schlarship has reduced yur ther merit schlarship aid (i.e. Presidential, Deans, and Directrs schlarships). Remember: The deadline fr freshman applicatins t UNH fr the fall semester is February 1, 2019. Yur financial aid package will nt be develped until after yu have been admitted t UNH.
